Before buying an NFC tag, check its exact chip model and the memory your task needs—not just the words “NFC tag.” For the common NTAG213, NTAG215, and NTAG216 comparison, the documented user-memory capacities are 144, 504, and 888 bytes. Memory may be the small specification that explains a mismatch, but it is not the only compatibility requirement: your phone, app, tag format, and intended action matter too.
Which NFC tag should I buy?
Start with the action you want the tag to trigger, then confirm that the phone and app you plan to use support the tag and its data format. If you are writing a routine NDEF message, compare the required payload with the chip’s documented user memory. “NFC tag” by itself does not tell you which chip is inside or how much space it provides.
NXP identifies NTAG213, NTAG215, and NTAG216 as NFC Forum Type 2 tags. Their capacities differ, while all three are Type 2 compliant. That makes memory a useful comparison for ordinary NDEF purchases, but it does not establish compatibility with every app or specialized use. NXP’s NTAG213/215/216 documentation lists the variants and specifications.

These are user-memory figures in NXP’s NTAG213/215/216 datasheet, revision 3.2, dated 2 June 2015. They are not character limits: the space a message occupies depends on its encoding and record overhead. Check whether the specific record fits rather than estimating from its visible character count.

There is no universally best choice among these three. A larger capacity is useful only when the intended payload or application needs it; an exact model listing is more informative than a generic “NFC tag” description.
What does the tag need to store?
NDEF is a common format for information stored on NFC tags. The NFC Forum gives examples of tap-based actions such as opening a web link, initiating a call, and pairing Bluetooth. The action’s data and the app’s requirements determine what the tag must hold; the action name alone does not reveal whether a particular memory capacity is enough. For a web link or other NDEF message, write or prepare the exact record you intend to use, then verify that it fits the selected chip. Avoid relying on a rule of thumb that converts bytes to a fixed number of characters.

Will the tag work with your phone and app?
Android
For Android NDEF deployments, the Android Ndef API reference recommends NFC Forum tag types 1–4 for compatibility across Android NFC devices. It warns that vendor-specific formats may not work across all devices. Because NTAG21x tags are documented as Type 2, they fit that standards-based filter, but this is not a guarantee that every phone, app, or task will work.

iPhone
Apple’s Core NFC documentation describes support for reading NDEF messages on tag types 1–5 and writing data to writable tags through appropriate interfaces. This framework-level support is not a blanket promise for every iPhone, app, or tag. Confirm that the app you will use supports the specific read or write operation you need.

- Define the task. Decide what the tag should do and which app will write or read it.
- Check compatibility. Verify the phone and app support the tag type, format, and operation. For Android NDEF, the official API guidance favors NFC Forum types 1–4 over vendor-specific formats.
- Find the exact chip model. Look for a listing that identifies NTAG213, NTAG215, NTAG216, or the specific chip your application requires. A generic NFC description does not establish the model.
- Match memory to the payload. Compare the record you intend to write with the model’s documented user memory; account for encoding and record overhead.
- Confirm the physical tag suits the installation. The intended surface and tag construction can matter. The model and memory figures alone do not establish that a tag will work in every placement.
NXP’s NTAG family comparison lists 10 years of data retention and 100,000 write cycles as manufacturer specifications. These are not independent performance measurements, and they do not identify the right tag for a particular task. NXP’s NTAG tags and labels comparison provides the family-level figures.
