The best monitor setup depends on what you do, how much desk space you have, your posture and vision, and what your computer can drive. These five practical configurations are options—not a tested ranking. Start with the layout that fits your work, then position the screen or screens so you can read comfortably without leaning or repeatedly turning your head.
Five monitor configurations to consider
Dell’s ergonomics examples include several screen sizes and orientations, but they are examples rather than recommendations for every user. Choose by the shape of your workspace and how you divide tasks—not by assuming that more screens or a larger screen automatically improves productivity.
1. One centered landscape monitor: a straightforward starting point
Place one screen directly in front of you. This suits work where you mainly use one active application or window at a time, and it avoids the need to divide your attention across displays. Dell includes a 27-inch standard landscape monitor in its examples. Set the viewing distance and height so the text is readable without leaning forward or tilting your head.

2. One centered curved ultrawide: a continuous horizontal canvas
A curved ultrawide offers a wider, continuous workspace on one display. Dell’s examples include a 34-inch curved landscape monitor. Consider this layout if you want room to arrange multiple windows side by side without a screen seam between them. Check desk depth and make sure you can view the full screen comfortably; the wider format is a layout choice, not proof of a productivity gain.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
3. Two landscape monitors with one primary: main task plus reference
Put the screen you use most directly in front of you and place the secondary screen beside it. OSHA recommends centering the primary monitor when one display is used more than the other. A second screen could hold reference material, communications, or another persistent window; these are possible uses, not outcomes established by the cited guidance. Dell illustrates this arrangement with two 24-inch landscape displays.
4. Two equally used displays: a shared dual-screen workspace
If you use both displays about equally, place them next to each other within a comfortable viewing angle, with the seam near your forward viewing position if that works for the tasks. OSHA advises minimizing head movement when use is split evenly. Avoid positioning the screens so you have to turn far to either side to read them.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
5. Landscape plus portrait: broad workspace with a tall page
A landscape display paired with a portrait display combines a wide work area with a tall page or document view. Dell includes a 24-inch monitor in portrait orientation among its examples. This may suit work that benefits from seeing more vertical content at once, but the cited sources do not establish that portrait orientation is better for a particular profession. Confirm that the monitor can rotate and that you can adjust its height and position comfortably.
Position screens for comfortable viewing
OSHA’s current workstation monitor guidance recommends a viewing distance of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm); its quick tips say to keep a monitor at least 20 inches away. Adjust text size if needed rather than moving closer or leaning forward. Treat these figures as setup guidance, not a guarantee of comfort for every person or workstation.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Height and gaze: OSHA says the top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level. It places the screen center normally 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level. Adapt the position for your posture, screen size, and glasses. OSHA notes that bifocal users may need a lower screen position to avoid tilting the head back.
- Primary-screen position: Keep the primary display in front of you. OSHA advises that screens should not be farther than 35 degrees to either side. With two equally used displays, arrange them side by side within a comfortable viewing angle and minimize head movement.
- Glare and tilt: OSHA advises placing the monitor perpendicular to windows and tilting it perpendicular to your line of sight, usually no more than 10–20 degrees. Adjust the screen position and room lighting to reduce reflections.
- Breaks: OSHA advises periodically looking at a distant object, stopping and blinking regularly, and alternating with non-computer tasks when possible. This is workstation guidance, not a medical guarantee.
An adjustable stand, mount, or monitor arm can help position screens. Before choosing an arm, check that it suits the monitor’s mounting pattern and weight, has enough range for your intended arrangement, fits your desk, and can accommodate cable reach.
Check computer and display compatibility before adding screens
A layout only works if the computer supports the number of displays and display modes you plan to use. Dell identifies HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C as common connection types, but the ports available on a particular computer and monitor vary. Check the host computer’s display support, available ports on both ends, and the cable or adapter needed for each connection before setting up.
Rank #4

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Confirm display support: Check the computer’s supported display count and graphics capability against the screens and resolutions you intend to use.
- Match ports and connections: Identify the available computer and monitor ports, then choose a compatible cable or adapter for each display.
- Arrange and adjust the screens: Set each monitor’s supported resolution and orientation in your operating system’s display settings. For portrait use, select the portrait orientation there as well.
Displays with similar sizes, resolutions, and refresh rates can make movement between screens feel more consistent. Mixed displays can still work; adjust their display settings to suit your use.
