There is no universal Mac license-removal tool. The right route depends on whether you want to clear local license files, release an activation for use on another device, remove a saved key, or uninstall the app. Those actions are different—and cancelling a subscription is separate again. Use the software publisher’s instructions for the specific app and license you have.
The seven routes below are official vendor workflows, not interchangeable utilities or a performance ranking. They cover Microsoft Office, TechSmith apps, Waves, Omni apps, and specialized license managers.
First decide what you need to remove
- Clear local license files: Removes stored licensing data from this Mac. The app may need to be activated again.
- Deactivate or release an activation: Frees an app activation according to that vendor’s license rules, often so you can use it elsewhere.
- Remove a saved license key: Deletes a manually entered key from an app that uses that older licensing approach.
- Uninstall the app or its license manager: Removes software, but does not necessarily release an activation or cancel a subscription.
- Cancel a subscription: Manage it through the account or billing service where you bought it. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
Before changing a license, make sure you can access the account or key needed to reactivate the software. Microsoft specifically advises having the account credentials for the intended Office license available before clearing Office license files.
Seven official Mac license-removal routes
| Route | What it does | Scope and important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Office License Removal Tool | Clears Office license files; sign in afterward to activate Office again. | Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 for Mac only. Have the account and password for the intended license ready. Microsoft Support instructions. |
| Snagit Manage License | Deactivates a Snagit license from within the Mac app. | TechSmith’s instructions specify Snagit 2021 or later for Mac. Account-based activation-reset options vary by license type. TechSmith Support instructions. |
| Camtasia license controls, then uninstall | The cited procedure deactivates Camtasia, then moves the app to Trash to uninstall it. | The deactivation instructions are specifically for Camtasia 2020; do not assume they apply to other versions. TechSmith Support instructions. |
| Waves Central | Uninstalls selected Waves products and offers a choice about deactivating their licenses. | For Waves products only; license deactivation is described as the default. You can choose to keep a license active. Waves Support instructions. |
| Omni app Licenses panel or account sign-out | Older apps can remove a manually entered key; account-activated apps can be signed out. | Omni says its current apps no longer use license keys. Keep a record of an old key before deleting it. This workflow applies to Omni apps, not other vendors’ software. The Omni Group’s instructions. |
| GRAPHISOFT License Manager Tool uninstaller | Uninstalls and reinstalls the manager as a troubleshooting step for license detection or connection problems. | A maintenance procedure for GRAPHISOFT software, not a general license-removal method. GRAPHISOFT Support instructions. |
| Steinberg eLicenser Control Center uninstaller | Removes the legacy license manager and checks for specified remaining files. | A specialized legacy cleanup route. Follow Steinberg’s guidance for the files and products involved. Steinberg Help instructions. |
How do I deactivate a Mac app license?
Use the app’s or publisher’s own deactivation control rather than deleting files or guessing which support files to remove. The exact location and available reset options depend on the product and license type.

For Snagit
For Snagit 2021 or later on Mac, TechSmith documents deactivation from Snagit > Manage License. If you need to clear account-based activations, check TechSmith’s instructions for the specific license type; the available options vary. See TechSmith’s Snagit activation guidance.
For Waves products
Waves Central combines product uninstall with a choice about license deactivation. Review the selection before proceeding: deactivation is the default in the documented workflow, but you can keep the license active. Follow Waves’ current procedure for the products you are removing.

For Camtasia
TechSmith’s cited instructions cover Camtasia 2020: deactivate the license, then move Camtasia to the Trash to uninstall it. Because that deactivation guidance is version-specific, consult TechSmith’s support page for your installed version rather than applying the 2020 steps to a newer release. See TechSmith’s Camtasia uninstall instructions.

Microsoft provides a dedicated Office License Removal Tool for Mac. It clears the Office license files on the Mac; afterward, Office must be activated again by signing in with the account associated with the license you intend to use. Microsoft says the tool “will completely remove all licenses for Microsoft 365 for Mac,” so do not run it unless you can access the correct account and are prepared to reactivate Office.

Can I remove an older app license key?
Some older Mac apps store a license key entered manually; newer versions may instead activate through an account. Omni documents both approaches for its own apps: remove a saved key through the app’s Licenses panel, or sign out of an account-activated app. Since a deleted key may be difficult to recover, preserve its details first. Do not apply Omni’s process to apps from other publishers. See The Omni Group’s license-removal instructions.
Does uninstalling an app remove its license?
Not necessarily. Uninstalling removes software, while license deactivation is a separate vendor-defined action. Waves Central is an example where the uninstaller workflow offers a license-deactivation choice; other apps may require an in-app control or account page.

Apple recommends checking for an app-specific uninstaller first. It may remove login items, extensions, or other app data that moving the app to Trash would leave behind. If there is no uninstaller or in-app removal feature, Apple says to move the app to the Trash. The Finder cannot remove some apps required by macOS. Apple also explicitly notes that “Deleting or uninstalling an app doesn’t cancel any subscription that you purchased with the app.” See Apple’s instructions for deleting or uninstalling Mac apps.

GRAPHISOFT License Manager Tool
GRAPHISOFT describes uninstalling and reinstalling its License Manager Tool to troubleshoot license detection or connection issues. That procedure is for GRAPHISOFT software; it is not a method for clearing unrelated apps’ licenses. Follow GRAPHISOFT’s procedure.
Steinberg eLicenser Control Center
Steinberg’s instructions cover removing the legacy eLicenser Control Center and checking for specified remaining files. Because this is a specialized legacy license system, use Steinberg’s own guidance for the relevant product and setup: Steinberg’s eLicenser uninstall instructions.
Quick Recap
Choose the route that matches the outcome
- To clear Microsoft Office license files, use Microsoft’s removal tool and be ready to sign in again.
- To release a Snagit activation, use Manage License and check TechSmith’s instructions for your version and license type.
- To remove Waves products, use Waves Central and decide whether the license should remain active.
- To remove a saved key from an Omni app, use Omni’s own Licenses or sign-out route and retain the key details first.
- To uninstall an app, check for the vendor’s uninstaller before using the Trash; handle activation and subscription status separately.
- To troubleshoot GRAPHISOFT’s or Steinberg’s license manager, use that vendor’s manager-specific instructions rather than a generic cleaner.
