The right laptop stand depends on where you work, whether you type on the laptop itself, and how much height adjustment and portability you need. For a permanent desk, prioritize a stable base and useful screen-height range; for travel, check the folded size, weight, and laptop fit. If you raise the screen for long typing sessions, plan on using a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen and typing position can be set independently.
Which laptop stand should you buy?
There is no single best stand for every setup. A stand positions and supports the screen; raising the laptop does not automatically put its built-in keyboard at a comfortable height. Choose around your work pattern first, then check compatibility and stability.
- For a fixed desk: favor a stable stand with enough height and angle adjustment to place the screen where you need it. If you type directly on the laptop, give keyboard angle and wobble particular attention.
- For travel: compare folded dimensions and weight with the space in your bag, and verify that the stand fits your laptop. Compactness alone does not establish fit or support.
- For extended typing: consider an external keyboard and mouse. OSHA recommends planning desk space for the monitor, keyboard, and input device, with the keyboard about elbow height. OSHA’s workstation purchasing guidance is general setup advice, not a product test.
“Adjustable” does not automatically mean ergonomic: the stand must reach a useful screen position, remain stable, and work with how you type.

What the reviewed picks are—and are not
Tom’s Guide’s comparison, dated July 24, 2025, named three examples: the Lamicall Adjustable Laptop Stand as its overall pick, the iVoler Laptop Stand as its budget pick, and the Rain Design iLevel2 as another stand it discussed. The guide describes the Lamicall as adjustable for height and angle and foldable, and the iVoler as portable. These are that outlet’s selections, not universal winners; the comparison does not establish that any one model is right for every laptop or still offers the same price, stock, or specifications.
Tom’s Guide says it selected ten stands and assessed setup, adjustment resistance, build and grips, stability after a nudge, daily tasks, and typing performance. Can you type directly on a laptop stand?
Yes, but whether it is practical depends on the stand’s height, angle, and stability. Raising the laptop can tilt or lift its built-in keyboard into a less suitable position for sustained typing. A fixed-height stand may suit a stable, single-location setup where direct typing matters, while a separate keyboard and mouse make it easier to position the screen and input devices independently. OSHA’s advice about keyboard height and desk space is general workstation guidance, not a guarantee of comfort for every person or setup.
Do you need ventilation or powered cooling?
An open stand may allow airflow around the laptop, while a powered cooling stand adds active cooling. The source guidance describes airflow as a feature to consider, but does not establish that a particular stand will lower temperatures or improve performance for every laptop. Treat cooling as a secondary criterion unless you have a device-specific reason to prioritize it, and look for evidence for the exact model rather than assuming a vented surface will solve a heat issue.
