The best Kodi remote is the one your playback device supports. Start by testing the remote that came with your Kodi device; if you want another control method, choose from a TV remote over HDMI-CEC, a USB RF handset, an official phone app, or another supported input. Kodi’s documentation cautions that a remote incompatible with the host hardware will not work simply because Kodi is installed on it.
How to choose a Kodi remote
First identify the device and operating system running Kodi. Then decide whether you want to reuse an existing remote, control Kodi from a phone, or add a dedicated handset. Kodi documents these control methods and their setup considerations, but the sources do not establish a tested ranking of seven specific remote models or comparable performance figures.
- Check the Kodi host. Confirm the exact device and operating system. Kodi notes that many devices, including Raspberry Pi and Android devices, ship with a remote that works out of the box. Try it before buying anything. Kodi remote-control guidance.
- Choose a connection type. HDMI-CEC can pass commands from a compatible TV remote; RF handsets generally use a USB receiver; phone apps connect over a network; other input devices may need configuration.
- Verify support and setup. Check compatibility with the host and the whole connection path. For RF and configurable inputs, confirm whether button mapping is needed.

Can you use your TV remote with Kodi?
Often, if the TV, Kodi device, and any receiver or other equipment in between support HDMI-CEC and the connection is configured appropriately. Kodi uses libCEC to support CEC control. Its documentation also describes USB-to-CEC adapters for some computers. Using a USB-CEC adapter with an HTPC
A computer without a suitable built-in CEC connection may use a USB-to-CEC adapter. This is a setup-specific option, not a guarantee of compatibility with every computer or operating system.
How RF remotes work with Kodi
Kodi describes RF remotes that communicate with a small USB dongle over 2.4 GHz radio. The receiver must be supported by the host. Some devices send keystrokes that Kodi can map to actions, so a handset may connect successfully yet still require button configuration. Use Kodi’s official phone apps
Kodi’s download page identifies Kore for Android and Official Kodi Remote for iOS as free, open-source remote apps. These suit readers who prefer a phone or tablet to a separate handset. Other inputs: game controllers and configurable devices
A compatible game controller or other input device may suit a setup where a conventional remote is not necessary. Kodi’s input settings cover game-controller input and CEC device configuration. What to check before buying a dedicated remote
- Confirm the precise Kodi host and operating system.
- Check whether the remote’s connection method—CEC, USB receiver, or another supported input—works with that host.
- For CEC, verify the TV, receiver, and Kodi device along the HDMI path.
- For RF, confirm USB receiver support and whether the buttons appear as usable keystrokes.
- Decide whether you need a physical handset or whether an existing remote or phone app is enough.
