Yes. To keep one person’s new Instagram comments on your posts from appearing to everyone, use Restrict. Their comments remain visible to them, while you can choose to approve them for everyone, delete them, or leave them hidden. Meta says you will not receive notifications for comments from a restricted account.
What happens when you restrict someone on Instagram?
Restrict is Instagram’s person-specific option for quietly limiting comments. Meta says comments from a restricted account on your posts are initially visible only to that person. You can review a comment and approve it, delete it, or ignore it. Until you approve it, other people viewing the post will not see it. Meta describes this behavior in its safety guidance.
Restrict does not stop the person from commenting, and it does not mean you have erased the comment. It gives you control over whether that comment is shown to other viewers.
How to choose the right Instagram control
| Your goal | Control | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Keep one person’s future comments from being seen by others | Restrict | Comments from that account are visible only to them unless you approve them. |
| Filter specific language or offensive terms | Hidden Words | Filters comments based on detected offensive language or terms, phrases, and emojis you choose; it is not aimed at a particular person. |
| Reduce a wave of unwanted comments or message requests | Limits | Hides comments and message requests from people who do not follow you or who followed recently; Meta also describes an option for people outside your Close Friends list. |
| Set a broader boundary around who can interact | Commenting audience and tag or mention controls | Use these when you want to limit who may comment, tag, or mention you, rather than manage one person’s comments individually. |
| Stop someone’s interactions more broadly | Block | Blocking is broader than hiding comments and is not equivalent to Restrict. |
Meta outlines these options in its safety guidance on Instagram interaction controls and its Safety Center.

Will someone know if you restrict them?
Meta presents Restrict as a quiet way to protect an account, and says the account owner does not receive notifications for comments from a restricted account. However, Meta does not guarantee that the other person could never infer a restriction from other interactions or circumstances. Avoid treating it as a promise of complete secrecy.
Where to find the controls
Instagram’s exact labels and menu paths can change and may differ by app version, device, or account. Look in the app’s privacy and comment controls for Restrict, Hidden Words, Limits, and audience settings. Meta’s published guidance establishes what the controls do, but not one universal sequence of taps for every account.
