The right holiday light projector depends on the image you want, the distance available across your yard, and how each part of the kit handles weather. In Bob Vila’s 2025 comparison, which evaluated 12 models for setup, brightness, display quality, and weather resistance, the Govee Outdoor Projector Light was named best overall; four alternatives were selected for value, multi-occasion use, laser patterns, and large homes. Those are that review’s dated judgments—not results of a new test—and the coverage figures below are published claims, not independently verified measurements.
Five holiday projectors and what each is suited for
Bob Vila’s 2025 comparison selected these five models from the 12 it evaluated. Its categories can help narrow a shortlist, but they are not a universal ranking: another October 2025 guide chose different products, reflecting different selection criteria. Check current availability, product revisions, and retailer listings before buying.

Choose between laser effects and projected images
Laser-effect projectors
These create light patterns rather than relying only on a fixed holiday picture. The Govee Outdoor Projector Light, model H7073, combines RGBW aurora effects with RGB laser patterns. Pattern-slide projectors
These project images from themed films or slides. Govee’s Holiday Pattern Projector Light, model H3860, comes with 16 replaceable films across six holiday themes, alongside a separate nebula light effect. It is a better fit to consider if recognizable seasonal images matter more than laser patterns. Match coverage claims to your actual placement distance
A projector’s advertised area is tied to how far it sits from the surface. Govee lists H7073 coverage of up to 5,069 sq ft when placed 33 ft away; for H3860, it advertises up to 1,500 sq ft and a projection range of 0–32 ft. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of the coverage you will get in your yard. A large claimed area may require a long, unobstructed placement: BestReviews cautions that covering a broad area can mean positioning a projector roughly 30 ft from the house. - Measure the distance from your intended projector position to the wall, trees, or other projection surface.
- Compare that distance with the product’s stated range and the distance used for its maximum coverage claim.
- Allow for obstacles, the shape of the surface, and whether the projector can be aimed where you want it.
Check weather protection for every component
Do not treat a kit’s highest IP rating as the rating for the whole product. The rating can differ between the projector, control box, and power adapter. For example, Govee lists H7073’s projector and control box as IP65 and its adapter as IP44; H3860’s projector is IP67 while its adapter is IP44. The ratings describe different components, so plan placement and protection around the least-protected part and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. An IP rating is not evidence of laser safety.
Compare controls, mounting, and aiming
Features matter when they solve a real setup need. Before choosing, check what is included and how the projector is adjusted:

- Controls: Look for included patterns or films, remote or app control, timers, motion settings, and synchronization only if you expect to use them. Govee lists app-oriented scenes and motion modes for H7073; capabilities differ by model.
- Mounting: Check whether a ground stake, base, or wall mount is included and whether your chosen surface can support it. Govee lists both a stake and base for H3860.
- Aiming: Confirm that the head can tilt and rotate enough to reach the intended projection area. Bob Vila noted limited head movement as a downside of H7073.
Understand the U.S. safety context for laser effects
Not every projector that displays patterns is a laser product: some use LEDs and projection films. For laser products promoted for demonstration purposes, the U.S. FDA states: “Laser products promoted for demonstration purposes are limited to hazard Class IIIa by FDA regulation 21 CFR 1040.11(c).” The FDA describes a visible-output limit of 5 milliwatts in the 400–710 nanometer range, with additional limits for invisible wavelengths and short pulses, and explains a variance and reporting process for higher-class laser light show equipment.
