The best free web design tool depends on what you need to make: Canva is suited to visual assets, Figma to interface drafts and collaboration, and Framer, Webflow, and Wix to creating websites. These are different kinds of tools, not five interchangeable site builders. Their free plans also have different limits, so check whether your project needs a custom domain, more pages, CMS features, storage, or publishing for commercial use.
Which kind of web design tool do you need?
- Visual assets: Choose Canva for graphics and other design materials used on a site.
- Interface planning: Choose Figma to draft interfaces and work with UI kits and templates.
- Build and publish a website: Consider Framer, Webflow, or Wix, while checking each platform’s free-plan terms against your project.
“Free” means an entry plan, not necessarily a complete, unrestricted business website. The feature counts and limits below come from the vendors’ plan pages, accessed in 2026; plans can change. They are not results of a shared hands-on test, so this is a task-based shortlist rather than an objective ranking.
Compare the five free options
| Tool | Best fit | What the free plan information establishes | Publishing and limits to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva | Visual design and site assets | Canva’s US pricing page lists Free at US$0 per year for one person, with 1,000+ design types, 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ photos, videos, graphics and audio, and 5GB of cloud storage. | These are vendor-published feature quantities, not independent outcome measures. The plan information supports a visual-design use case; it does not establish Canva as equivalent to a full website builder. Canva pricing |
| Figma | Interface drafts and design collaboration | Figma describes its Starter plan as free limited access and lists unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates. | “Unlimited drafts” does not mean unrestricted access to every Figma tool. Check the Starter plan details for the features and collaboration access your work requires. Figma pricing |
| Framer | Design-led website creation | Framer lists 10 CMS collections, 1,000 pages, 5 MB file uploads and one locale on its Free plan. | Framer says a custom domain requires a paid plan and describes Free as ideal for non-commercial use. Those terms matter if you are building a business site or need your own domain. Framer pricing |
| Webflow | Visual site building with defined Starter limits | Webflow’s free Starter plan lists two static pages, limited CMS, 1 GB bandwidth and 50 form submissions. | Starter uses a Webflow.io domain. Webflow lists custom-domain support on its paid Basic plan, so factor in an upgrade if a custom domain is essential. Webflow pricing |
| Wix | Free site creation | Wix says you can create a site for free and choose a plan when you are ready. | The available plan information does not establish detailed free-tier limits for ads, storage, custom domains or ecommerce. Check Wix’s live plan terms before relying on any of those features. Wix plans |
How to choose for your project
If you need graphics, not a whole website
Start with Canva when the main job is producing visual materials for a site. Its free plan page gives useful quantities for templates, assets and storage, but those figures do not prove that it covers the full process of building and publishing a website. Confirm the publishing features you need before treating it as your site platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you need to plan an interface
Figma’s free Starter option is aimed at limited access for interface work. Its listed unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates can support early design work, but do not assume that every feature or collaboration capability is included. Check the current plan details for your team’s workflow.

If you need a published website
Compare Framer, Webflow and Wix against the site you intend to launch. Framer publishes specific Free-plan allowances, but requires a paid plan for a custom domain and describes the free tier as ideal for non-commercial use. Webflow’s Starter plan has explicit page, bandwidth and form-submission ceilings and uses a Webflow.io address. Wix confirms free site creation, but the plan information available here does not provide enough detail to assess its specific free-tier constraints.
Check these limits before committing
- Domain: If the site must use your own domain, account for a paid plan where required. Framer explicitly requires an upgrade for a custom domain; Webflow’s free Starter uses a Webflow.io domain.
- Pages and CMS: Compare the number and type of pages you need with Framer’s listed 1,000-page and 10-collection allowances and Webflow Starter’s two static pages and limited CMS.
- Files, bandwidth and storage: Match your expected media and traffic to Framer’s 5 MB upload limit, Webflow’s 1 GB bandwidth allowance, or Canva’s listed 5GB cloud storage, keeping in mind that these measure different things.
- Forms and collaboration: Webflow lists 50 form submissions on Starter; Figma’s Starter plan is limited access, so verify which collaboration features your project requires.
- Commercial use: Framer describes its Free plan as ideal for non-commercial use. Check the vendor’s current terms for any other tool before launching a business site.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
Official plan pages provide a useful starting point for understanding free entry plans, but they do not make these products directly comparable in design quality, ease of use, performance, accessibility, or SEO outcomes. No common hands-on test or independent comparative study establishes a universal winner here. Treat the listed plan quantities as vendor claims and verify current limits on the linked pages before building around them.
