If Google Docs will not sync or a document’s layout looks wrong, first identify whether the problem is online editing, offline sync, or formatting. For a temporary server error, wait five minutes and reload. For ongoing problems, isolate the browser or device, then follow the matching sync or formatting steps below.
Start by identifying the problem
Google’s guidance covers Docs in a computer browser and offline editing in a desktop browser; it does not describe a separate native Docs desktop editor. Use the message and scope of the problem to choose the right path.
- A page reports an error or will not reload: If you see “Encountered an error. Please try reloading this page, or coming back to it in a few minutes” or “A server error occurred. Please press Reload in your browser,” wait five minutes, then reload. Google recommends this wait-and-reload step.
- The file opens but you cannot edit: Open the same document on another device. If it works there, the original device or its browser environment may be involved; this clue does not identify the cause by itself.
- You see “Could not sync document or trouble syncing”: Follow the offline-sync checks below, rather than treating it as a general formatting problem.
- The document edits normally but looks inconsistent: Select the affected text or paragraphs and apply the specific formatting control or style needed.
Fix browser and editing errors
When a document will not load or accept edits, work through the browser environment before making changes to the document itself. Google lists extensions, browsing data, connection quality, outdated software, and browser-specific behavior among possible factors.
- Test for extension interference. Open Docs in a private browser session. If it works there, disable extensions in your usual session one at a time to identify whether one affects the page. Private browsing may not be suitable for offline editing.
- Check the connection. Improve or restore your internet connection, then try the document again.
- Update the browser and device software. Google recommends using one of the browser’s two most recent versions for the best Docs and Drive experience. Other browsers may work but may lack some features. Confirm cookies and JavaScript are enabled. See Google’s browser and system requirements.
- Try another browser. If the document works there, the issue may be specific to the original browser’s setup.
- Clear browsing data if the issue persists. Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes clearing browsing data, cookies, and cached files. This can sign you out, so be ready to sign in again.
Restore offline editing and sync
Offline editing is a browser-based desktop workflow with specific setup requirements. It is separate from an ordinary online editing or reload error.

Check offline setup
To use Docs offline on a computer, Google requires an internet connection during setup, Chrome or Microsoft Edge, private browsing turned off, the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension installed and enabled, and enough free local storage. To check a file’s readiness, open it and inspect See document status next to its title. Google’s offline access instructions describe the setup.
Resolve “Could not sync document or trouble syncing”
- Check that the computer has a working network connection.
- In the affected document, choose File > Make available offline to turn offline access off.
- Choose File > Make available offline again to turn it back on.
- If syncing still fails, make the document smaller. Google suggests copying smaller sections into new documents.
Handle offline status and account restrictions
- If checking offline status hangs, reload the document. If that does not help, clear site data for
docs.google.com. - If you see “Offline sync is disabled by your administrator,” offline access is blocked for the account. Contact the administrator.
- Only one account per browser profile can have offline enabled. If another account already uses offline in that profile, use separate browser profiles for the accounts.
Correct formatting without changing the whole document
Google’s computer controls let you target text, paragraphs, or objects. Select the affected content before applying a change so you do not unintentionally alter other parts of the document. The Docs formatting controls include font, text color, highlight, paragraph alignment, line and paragraph spacing, and paragraph borders and shading.

Apply consistent paragraph styles
For headings and body text, use the Styles menu or choose Format > Paragraph styles, then apply Normal text, Title, or the appropriate heading level. Styles are a better way to keep repeated heading and body formatting consistent than adjusting each paragraph independently.
Copy a known-good format
Select the text or object with the appearance you want, click Paint format, then select the destination. For text formatting, the shortcuts are Ctrl+Alt+C followed by Ctrl+Alt+V on Windows or ChromeOS, and Command+Option+C followed by Command+Option+V on Mac. See Google’s Paint format instructions.

Adjust line and paragraph spacing
Select the relevant paragraphs, then use the line and paragraph spacing controls to choose Single, 1.15, 1.5, Double, or custom spacing. The same controls include options to add or remove space before or after paragraphs. In paged documents, pagination settings include Keep with next, Keep lines together, and Prevent single lines; these controls are not available in pageless format.
When the problem persists
Use the pattern of the failure to decide what to check next: whether it occurs online or only offline, in one browser or on every device, for one account or multiple accounts in the same browser profile, and in one selection or throughout the document. A failure isolated to one browser or device points toward that environment; a sync failure limited to offline use points toward offline setup, account restrictions, connectivity, or document size. These patterns help narrow the issue but do not prove a particular cause.

If browser troubleshooting and the relevant offline steps do not restore access, consult Google’s editing and reload-error guidance or contact the account administrator when the message indicates an administrator restriction.

Some system requirements apply to Drive for desktop, not to using Google Docs in a browser. Google lists Microsoft WebView2 for Drive for desktop on Windows and macOS Ventura 13.0 or higher on Mac. Drive for desktop is unavailable on Linux; Google directs Linux users to Drive on the web. These requirements should not be treated as minimum operating-system requirements for browser-based Docs.
