There is no single best email marketing tool for every small business. The right choice depends on your contact count, how often you send, the workflows you need, and the total cost of the plan that includes those features. Use the shortlist below to identify candidates, then verify the limits and price for your actual use before signing up.

How to choose an email marketing platform

Start with what the business needs to do, not a vendor ranking. A newsletter-only setup has different requirements from a store sending purchase follow-ups or a team coordinating campaigns with a CRM.

  • Cost basis: Check whether billing is driven mainly by stored contacts, email volume, or both. Estimate the bill using your list size and sending schedule, and look for overage charges or upgrade rules.
  • List and send limits: Compare contact ceilings with monthly or daily sending allowances. Find out whether exceeding a limit pauses campaigns, adds charges, or requires a higher tier.
  • Automation: Decide whether you need only scheduled newsletters or also welcome sequences, customer follow-ups, segmentation, and event-triggered messages.
  • Ease of use and support: Consider the time a small team can spend learning and maintaining the system. Check documentation, onboarding, and whether phone or live chat support matters to you.
  • Integrations and channels: Confirm that the platform connects to the store, CRM, website forms, or booking system you use. Pay for SMS or other channels only if you plan to use them.
  • Reporting and testing: Identify the campaign results you need to track, then confirm that the appropriate reporting, A/B testing, and optimization features are included in the affordable plan.

These are common comparison dimensions, not proof that one platform performs best. For additional category coverage, see GetResponse’s email marketing service comparison, Fit Small Business’s comparison, and TechRadar’s software guide; treat editorial rankings as starting points rather than independent head-to-head test results.

Which tools belong on a small-business shortlist?

Use these fit signals to narrow the field. They describe positioning in vendor or comparison materials, not hands-on testing or a universal ranking.

Mailchimp: consider it for an all-in-one starting point

Mailchimp may suit a business looking for a familiar, broad marketing platform. Its official pricing page describes a free tier for fewer than 250 contacts and warns that sending can be paused if account limits are exceeded. The page differentiates tiers by features such as campaign testing, automation flows, and SMS. Check the current limits against both your list and your sending cadence before relying on the free tier: Mailchimp pricing.

Constant Contact: consider it if support or event marketing matters

Constant Contact describes its product as paid, with a free trial and plans starting at $12 per month. Its pricing page lists phone and chat support on plans and describes higher-tier scheduling, subject-line testing, automation, reporting, and SMS. The page lists Standard at $35 per month, with scheduling, subject-line A/B testing, automatic resend to non-openers, and reporting. These are company-published figures from 2026; currency, region, billing terms, promotions, and configuration can affect what you see. Verify the current offer and the plan details for your location at Constant Contact pricing.

Brevo: consider it when send volume is central to the cost calculation

Comparison coverage positions Brevo for businesses interested in send-volume pricing alongside email, SMS, CRM, and automation capabilities. Confirm current limits and prices directly before selecting a tier. See GetResponse’s comparison and TechRadar’s guide for category context.

MailerLite: consider it for a simpler newsletter setup

Comparisons position MailerLite as a simpler newsletter option for small teams and creators. Check its current plan limits and integrations against your requirements rather than assuming a simpler tool will cover future workflows. See Fit Small Business’s comparison and TechRadar’s guide.

ActiveCampaign: consider it when advanced automation is genuinely needed

Comparison coverage associates ActiveCampaign with advanced automation and CRM-connected workflows. Those capabilities can bring additional setup effort or cost, so it is most relevant when the business has specific processes to automate. See Fit Small Business’s comparison and TechRadar’s guide.

GetResponse: consider it if you will use more than email

Comparison coverage describes a broader toolset that includes email, automation, landing pages, and webinars. That breadth matters when those functions are part of your plan, not simply because they are available. See GetResponse’s service comparison and TechRadar’s guide.

What do the published plan figures tell you?

The dated figures below are vendor-published claims, not a stable price comparison. They can vary with region, currency, billing term, list size, promotions, and plan configuration.

Platform Published detail What to verify
Mailchimp In 2026, its official pricing page described the free tier as available under 250 contacts and warned that sending may be paused when plan limits are exceeded. Contact and send ceilings, plus whether the features you need are included: official pricing page.
Constant Contact In 2026, its official pricing page said paid plans start at $12 per month and listed Standard at $35 per month with scheduling, subject-line A/B testing, automatic resend to non-openers, and reporting. A low entry price is not necessarily the best value. Compare the plan that supports your intended contact count, volume, and required features; confirm current prices and limits on the vendor’s page before purchase.

How to avoid a plan that stops fitting as you grow

  1. Estimate the list you will actually maintain. Include likely growth rather than choosing a tier based only on today’s subscribers.
  2. Work out the sending cadence. Multiply typical campaign frequency by the number of messages per campaign, and include automated messages where applicable.
  3. Map required workflows to plan features. Check whether welcome emails, segmentation, testing, reporting, SMS, or CRM connections are included at the tier you can afford.
  4. Calculate the likely recurring cost. Use your list size and message volume on the vendor’s pricing page. Check what happens at a limit and how upgrades or overages work.
  5. Choose a candidate to trial or test. Use a free tier only if its eligibility and limits support your intended use; a free trial is temporary and is not the same offer as a free plan.

What the comparison evidence can—and cannot—establish

Comparison articles assign platforms to use cases, but those labels are editorial framing rather than proof of superiority. The comparisons cited above help surface candidates and feature categories; they are not a neutral, publisher-owned cross-platform benchmark. No comparative deliverability result is established here. Constant Contact’s pricing page mentions a 98% inbox rate based on 2025 Validity Everest qualified inbox test results, but without the original report and methodology, that figure should not be treated as independently verified evidence that it delivers better than another service.
