Yes—cable management matters most when it keeps cords out of walkways and away from sharp edges, doorways, and pinch points where they can be damaged. For a desk, the practical goal is not to make every cable invisible: route and support each cord so it does not snag, obstruct use, or get pinched.
Why cable management matters
The strongest reason is preventing physical damage. In US general-industry workplaces, OSHA requires flexible cords and cables to be protected from accidental damage, including hazards such as sharp corners, projections, doorways, and other pinch points. The rule also requires cords to be supported in a way that protects them from physical damage. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.305(a)(2)
That requirement is workplace-specific, not a blanket rule that every household desk must meet a particular cable-management standard. OSHA says it has no standards specific to computer workstations, while noting that existing electrical-safety standards apply in offices. OSHA Computer Workstations — Overview
What a tidy setup can solve
- Walkway and doorway exposure: Move cords away from places where people walk, open doors, or roll chairs.
- Edges and pinch points: Reroute a cable that is trapped behind furniture or pulled across a sharp edge.
- Loose slack: Gather excess length so it does not snag during normal use or interfere with access to equipment.
- Unsupported runs: Add support where a cord hangs or shifts in a way that exposes it to physical damage.
These are practical routing goals, not evidence that a neat desk by itself improves performance or prevents a quantified number of failures. The cited sources establish protection and installation requirements, not measurable benefits from decluttering.

Choose a management method for the problem
| Method | Useful for | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable cable ties | Gathering slack or holding a group of cords together | Secure without crushing, abrading, or otherwise damaging the cables. |
| Clips or straps | Guiding a loose cord along furniture or keeping it out of a route | Position the support so it does not create a new pinch point or sharp bend. |
| Sleeves | Keeping several nearby cords together along a run | Use only where the bundle remains accessible and the sleeve does not conceal a damaged cable. |
| Under-desk cable trays | Supporting and gathering cords beneath a desk | Choose a support suited to the installation; avoid loading it in a way that strains plugs or cables. |
These are product categories, not a ranking of consumer products. The IEC publishes separate standards for cable ties and their fixing devices, and for cable tray and ladder systems; those standards define installation-product scopes rather than prescribing a universal setup for a home desk. IEC 62275:2022 covers cable ties for electrical installations. IEC 61537:2023 covers cable tray and ladder systems intended to support and accommodate cables in electrical or communication installations.
How to route desk or entertainment-system cords
- Find the exposure. Trace each cord from device to outlet. Look for walkways, doorways, sharp edges, places where furniture presses on the cord, or slack that catches during ordinary use.
- Reroute before adding hardware. Move the cord to a safer path when possible. A tie or tray cannot make an unsafe pinch point safe if the cord is still trapped.
- Support it gently. Use a clip, strap, tie, or tray only as needed to keep the cord in place. OSHA specifically says ties, straps, staples, and similar fittings must be installed without damaging the cable. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.305(a)(2)
- Check the result. Confirm that doors, chairs, and furniture do not press on the cord, and that the support has not pinched or abraded it. Leave enough slack for normal movement and for safely disconnecting equipment.
Loose equipment cords are not fixed wiring
Desk and entertainment-system cords are different from conductors installed in a building. IEC 61537 addresses tray and ladder systems; IEC 61386-1 addresses conduit systems for protecting and managing insulated conductors and cables within its electrical and communication-system scope. Neither standard is a blanket instruction to install trays or conduit for every household cord. IEC 61386-1

For fixed wiring, follow local electrical rules and use qualified help where required. A consumer cable tie or desk tray is not a substitute for selecting and installing electrical wiring components correctly.

What cable management does not prove
The cited requirements establish protection from physical damage and specify scopes for cable-support products. They do not show that every untidy desk cable causes overheating or fire, provide a universal rule for how tightly consumer cables may be bundled, or quantify a reduction in injuries, failures, or fire from tidying a setup. Treat a visible hazard—such as a cord repeatedly crushed by a door—as the reason to reroute it, rather than assuming clutter alone demonstrates danger.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- ZIP IT CLOSED IN SECONDS: Wrap the sleeve around a bundle of cords, pull the zipper, and the tangle is gone; no tools, no cutting and nothing to unplug before you start
- CABLE MANAGEMENT SLEEVE FOR DESK AND TV: One black cable sleeve keeps power cords, HDMI cables, charger cables and speaker wire in a single clean run behind a desk, computer, TV stand or media console
- HIDES AND COVERS LOOSE WIRE: This cord sleeve draws stray cables into one sheath, so the wall and floor behind your setup read as a tidy line instead of a knot of wires
- UNZIPS WHENEVER PLANS CHANGE: The wire sleeve suits a slim charger cable or a thick bundle of computer cords, and it opens again any time you need to add, swap or pull out a cable
- INCLUDES: (4) 24 in x 4 in zipper cable sleeves in black from Wrap-It Storage, enough to take on a desk, a computer tower, a TV wall and a home office in one pass
