To choose the right measurement surface, first identify the backend and device that execute the workload, then verify those details in the benchmark result. A CPU-labeled run does not measure work that happened on a GPU; equally, selecting a GPU backend does not prove that a particular GPU ran. Confirm the execution details before interpreting a timing.

What a measurement surface tells you

A measurement surface is the execution backend whose work and metrics appear in benchmark evidence. The distinction matters when an application can use a CPU or GPU: measuring one backend may capture only part of the workload, while work performed elsewhere is not represented by that backend’s timing.

Backend and device are related but different. A backend identifies an execution path, such as CPU or GPU; the device enumeration identifies which hardware is available for that path. Neither the backend name nor a timing alone establishes which device did the work.

How to verify the backend you are measuring

  1. List the backends the tool recognizes

The article’s example is csperf list-backends. Use the output to see which execution backends this tool reports as available; do not assume that every tool supports the same set.

  2. Enumerate devices for the backend

For CPU, the example command is csperf list-devices --backend cpu. The article uses this step to distinguish a backend from the devices associated with it. Its example lists CPUs as logical CPUs, but does not establish that this command or output is current for every csperf version or system.

    • ZeroFrame Design: With a KB220Q monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
  3. Run the intended workload and save its result

The article shows a CPU run that supplies an input file, selects the CPU backend, and writes results/cpu.json. It does not provide the complete command text in the available search-result extraction, so do not treat a reconstructed command as verified syntax. Consult the tool’s current usage information for the exact invocation and required input options.

For your own run, record the workload, input, selected backend, and output artifact together. This makes it possible to check that the result belongs to the intended run rather than inferring execution from a filename or command label.

    • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  4. Inspect the artifact before reading the timing

Check the result’s backend field and any device or execution details the tool records. Then inspect execution time and other reported metrics. If the artifact does not establish which device ran the workload, report that uncertainty rather than presenting the backend selection as proof.

  5. Decide whether another backend needs a separate run

If the question is how the workload performs on a GPU, a CPU result cannot answer it. Run the workload on the intended GPU backend only if a suitable GPU is available, then inspect that run’s artifact in the same way. The existence of a GPU option is not evidence that a GPU run will be faster.

How to interpret repeat measurements

One run is not enough to show how stable a benchmark is. Repeat the same workload under the same conditions and report both a central result and variation. The source article reports minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation for its CPU trials; those summaries help readers see whether a mean describes a tight cluster or obscures fluctuation.

As an example of what the article reports—not an independently reproduced test—it gives CPU trial times of 5.185 ms, 5.153 ms, and 5.148 ms. It reports a mean of 5.162 ms and standard deviation of 0.020 ms, with the result section specifying 0.020075 ms. The article associates these figures with a 2026 cpu.json artifact and describes the machine as an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X with 16 logical CPUs. The artifact was not available for independent checking, so these are the article’s published figures, not verified measurements.

When publishing your own results, state the number of trials, the summary statistics, and the machine and software conditions that materially affect the measurement. Keep the raw per-trial values available where possible; they make the spread and any unusual run easier to assess.

When a CPU-versus-GPU comparison is fair

Compare backends only when the comparison answers the same question on both sides. Keep the workload and inputs the same, and match build or toolchain conditions and the measurement procedure as closely as possible. Confirm the actual backend and device in each result artifact, then compare repeated measurements rather than isolated best-case timings.

The cited article provides CPU results but no GPU measurements, so it does not establish which backend is faster. A valid GPU result requires a separate run on an available GPU and evidence that the GPU backend actually executed the workload. Do not infer a speedup—or a slowdown—from the CPU example alone.

A compact reporting checklist

  • Name the benchmark tool and its version when known.
  • Identify the selected backend and the device confirmed by the result.
  • Describe the workload and input used for each run.
  • State relevant build, toolchain, and measurement conditions.
  • Report repeat count and variability alongside a central timing.
  • Label figures as measured by you or reported by another source; do not imply independent validation when none was performed.
