The Galaxy Z Fold7 is the better fit if you want a phone that opens into a large screen for reading or multitasking; the iPhone 17 Pro is the conventional, lower-priced launch option. At U.S. launch, their base prices differed by $900. That extra cost bought the Fold7’s foldable design and 8-inch inner display—not a universally better phone.
Price: the Fold7 launched $900 higher in the U.S.
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold7 on July 9, 2025, with U.S. availability beginning July 25. Its launch MSRP started at $1,999.99. Apple announced iPhone 17 Pro on September 9, 2025; U.S. availability began September 19, with a starting price of $1,099. These are launch prices before offers or trade-ins, not current retail quotes. Samsung’s launch announcement and Apple’s announcement provide the respective pricing and launch details.
| Phone | U.S. launch starting price | Storage options cited |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | $1,999.99 | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB |
| Apple iPhone 17 Pro | $1,099 | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB |
The $900 gap compares the two base configurations at their announced U.S. launch prices. Compare current prices at the same storage capacity and with the same unlocked or carrier status before buying; promotions and trade-in terms can change the amount you pay.
Form factor and displays: a foldable screen versus a regular phone
The Fold7 has an 8-inch main display when open and a 6.5-inch cover display when folded. The iPhone 17 Pro has a conventional 6.3-inch OLED display. Samsung’s Fold7 specifications and Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro specifications show the difference in size and format.
#1 Best Overall
- BIGGER, YET SLIMMER THAN EVER: Who would’ve guessed that wider could also be lighter? The design of Galaxy Z Fold7 is refined to feel like a traditional smartphone with its expanded cover display.
- BEST CAMERA ON A FOLD YET: You asked for more – now you can have the most. Galaxy Z Fold7 now boasts an ultra-premium 200MP camera with Pro-Visual Engine so you can effortlessly take incredibly detailed pics.
- SCREENSHARE FOR STREAMLINED ASSISTANCE: Intrigued by something you see? Go Live with Google Gemini, then screenshare or point your camera at it for additional info or assistance on the fly.¹
- DO AND VIEW MORE, ALL AT ONCE: With an 8” screen that allows you to view up to three windows at once, Galaxy Z Fold7 is the ultimate device for seeing and doing more.²
- ALL THE POWER AND SPEED YOU NEED Smoothly run your day with the power and speed of Galaxy Z Fold7. With its customized Snapdragon 8 Elite processor for Galaxy, you can stream your favorite shows, edit photos, scroll social feeds and more with ease.³
That distinction matters more than a simple diagonal-size comparison. The Fold7 can provide more room for reading, viewing content, or keeping apps side by side when unfolded; it also means choosing a foldable rather than a traditional single-screen phone. If you prefer the familiar shape and interaction of a conventional smartphone, the iPhone is the clearer match.
Hardware and features at a glance
| Feature | Galaxy Z Fold7 | iPhone 17 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Rear cameras | 200MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide, 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | Three 48MP Fusion rear cameras, as described by Apple |
| Chip and software features | Snapdragon 8 Elite customized for Galaxy; One UI 8 and Galaxy AI features described by Samsung | A19 Pro; Apple Intelligence listed by Apple |
| Battery information | Samsung lists 4400mAh capacity | No directly comparable battery-capacity figure established here |
| Water and dust resistance | IP48 | IP68; Apple specifies up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529 |
| Stylus | Samsung says the Fold7 does not support S Pen | Not addressed in the cited specifications |
| Weight | Not stated in the cited Samsung specifications | 206g (7.27 oz) |
Camera resolution is not a result or a guarantee of image quality. The Fold7’s 200MP wide camera and the iPhone’s three 48MP Fusion cameras describe different hardware configurations; megapixel counts alone cannot tell you which phone takes better photos. Consider the focal lengths and camera features you use, and look at comparable sample images rather than treating the largest number as the winner.

- A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.
Samsung’s 4400mAh figure is battery capacity, not a runtime measurement. Without comparable battery-life testing of both phones, it does not establish which lasts longer in everyday use. Similarly, chip names and AI feature labels describe platforms and manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a head-to-head performance result. Samsung’s product page lists One UI 8 and Galaxy AI; Apple lists Apple Intelligence. Which matters more depends on your preferred ecosystem and the specific features you expect to use.
The resistance ratings are not interchangeable promises of damage-proofing. IP48 and IP68 have different rating combinations; Apple’s stated 6-meter, 30-minute maximum is under IEC 60529. Exposure conditions and wear can affect real-world protection, so neither rating should be treated as permission to risk damage.

Which phone should you choose?
Choose the Galaxy Z Fold7 if
- You specifically want a large screen that unfolds for reading, viewing, or multitasking.
- You are comfortable with a foldable form factor and its higher U.S. launch starting price.
- You do not require S Pen support: Samsung says the Fold7 does not support it.
Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if
- You want a conventional smartphone rather than a foldable.
- You prefer Apple’s ecosystem and the iPhone’s listed Apple Intelligence features.
- You want the lower announced U.S. launch starting price of the two base configurations.
There is no universal winner in these specifications. The central choice is whether the Fold7’s larger unfolded display is worth the form-factor change and higher launch price to you, or whether you would rather have a traditional iPhone at the lower announced starting price.
