The best Windows laptop for AI depends on what you need it to do. If you want Microsoft’s newer Windows AI experiences, start with a model and exact configuration identified as a Copilot+ PC, then verify its NPU meets the 40+ TOPS requirement cited by Microsoft for many of those features. After that, choose by workload: memory, storage, display, portability, application compatibility, and graphics matter more than an AI label alone.
What counts as an AI laptop on Windows?
“AI PC” is a broad marketing term. The clearer Windows category is Copilot+ PC: Microsoft describes these as Windows 11 devices built around a high-performance neural processing unit (NPU) for AI-intensive processes. Microsoft says many newer Windows AI features require an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second, or TOPS. Microsoft Learn’s Copilot+ developer guidance treats that capability as a feature eligibility threshold, not a promise that every AI application will run faster or that TOPS alone predicts performance.
Microsoft names Qualcomm Snapdragon X devices and newer AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Core Ultra 200V silicon among relevant Copilot+ examples. Product families span generations and configurations, so verify both the exact processor and the Copilot+ designation for the SKU you are considering. Microsoft’s Copilot+ buying guide provides processor examples and buying considerations.

How to choose the right AI laptop for your work
1. Start with the Windows AI features you want
If Copilot+ features are a priority, check that the exact laptop configuration is marketed as Copilot+ and has the required NPU capability. If you only need general productivity or AI applications that run in the cloud, a Copilot+ label may be less important than processor compatibility, memory, and the software you actually use. Feature requirements can vary, so check the requirements for your intended Windows feature or application.
2. Match the processor and platform to your applications
Microsoft’s buying guide names AMD Ryzen AI 300, Intel Core Ultra 7 200V Series 2, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X series as Copilot+ processor options. The processor family is only one part of the decision: confirm that your essential applications, peripherals, and workflows are supported on the specific platform and Windows edition. Do not assume an NPU threshold resolves compatibility or application-performance questions.

3. Choose enough memory and storage
Think about how many applications and browser tabs you keep open, the size of creative projects, and whether you plan to store local datasets or models. Microsoft specifically calls out RAM and storage as workload considerations and notes that creators may need room for large media files. Compare the memory and SSD capacity of the exact configuration rather than relying on the laptop family name.
4. Balance screen, portability, and desk use
Compare screen size, resolution, panel type, keyboard, ports, and weight against where you will use the laptop. A frequent traveler may value a lighter machine and practical battery behavior; a desk-based user may prefer a larger display or more ports. Microsoft cautions that battery life varies with settings and use, so a catalog claim should not be treated as a guarantee for your workload. Microsoft’s guide also recommends considering display resolution and other personal needs.
5. Treat the NPU and graphics processor as different tools
An NPU’s TOPS rating does not tell you how well a laptop will handle gaming, 3D rendering, video effects, or AI software that relies on GPU acceleration. For those workloads, compare the discrete GPU configuration, cooling, power needs, display, and portability. A current independent roundup separates discrete-GPU gaming laptops from thin-and-light productivity systems, and its model rankings are editorial and time-sensitive. Tom’s Guide’s laptop roundup is one such comparison; its results should not be read as a universal ranking or as evidence of hands-on testing by this publication.

6. Compare the exact SKU and local price
One model family can include different processors, memory, storage, displays, and AI capabilities. Compare the precise configuration offered in your region and check availability, warranty terms, and current price at the seller. Microsoft says its displayed prices and product availability can vary and change. Its catalog is a starting point, not a substitute for verifying a retailer’s live listing.

- Portable everyday work: Prioritize weight, comfortable keyboard and display, useful ports, battery behavior, and enough memory and storage. Copilot+ eligibility matters if you specifically want those Windows features.
- Creative work: Look closely at screen quality, memory, storage, software compatibility, and GPU acceleration where your creative applications benefit. Large media files can make capacity especially important.
- Gaming or GPU-heavy work: Compare the discrete GPU, cooling, power, display, and portability. An AI-capable NPU is not a substitute for graphics performance, and a powerful GPU laptop may involve compromises in weight or unplugged endurance.
- Budget shopping: Compare current local prices for equivalent configurations. Without a defined budget, region, and workload, there is no defensible universal value winner.
Should you buy a Copilot+ PC?
Buy one if you want Windows features that require Copilot+ hardware and the exact device also suits your applications, memory and storage needs, screen preferences, and budget. If your main priority is gaming, creative GPU work, or a particular application, select hardware for that workload first and verify its platform compatibility. Neither the “AI PC” label nor a TOPS figure can replace that check.
