For a Windows PC, Microsoft’s general guidance is 8 GB of RAM for keeping a device running long term; 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is a system requirement, not a recommendation for comfortable everyday use. The right amount depends on what you run and whether your computer is a standard Windows 11 PC or a Copilot+ PC.
What RAM does—and what “gigs” means
When people ask how many gigs of memory they need, they usually mean gigabytes of RAM. RAM is a computer’s short-term working memory: programs and tasks use it while they are running. It is different from storage, such as an SSD, which keeps files and applications when the device is turned off. Microsoft explains the distinction in its guide to computer memory.
How much RAM fits your workload?
| Situation | Memory guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping a Windows device running long term | 8 GB | Microsoft’s general guidance, not a guarantee that every workload will run comfortably. |
| Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects | 16 GB or more | Microsoft says this may be a good fit; the needs of specific programs and projects can differ. |
| Minimum to meet Windows 11 system requirements | 4 GB or greater | This is Microsoft’s operating-system minimum, not a workload-based comfort recommendation. |
| Copilot+ PC | 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 | Microsoft lists this as a minimum for this specific PC class, not for every Windows 11 computer. |
The 8 GB and 16 GB guidance comes from Microsoft Support’s “All about computer memory”. Windows 11’s minimum is listed in Microsoft’s system requirements, and the Copilot+ PC requirement appears in Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.

Check your computer before buying more RAM
More memory helps only if it matches the device and the workload. Before buying a RAM upgrade, look up the exact computer model in its manufacturer’s specifications and confirm:

What these recommendations do—and do not—cover
Microsoft’s figures provide Windows-focused guidance. They do not establish a universal capacity for every operating system, a specific gaming recommendation, or requirements for an individual application. For those cases, check the software maker’s requirements and the computer manufacturer’s supported memory specifications rather than treating a general figure as a guarantee.
