You can use an external SSD either to install Windows 11 onto a PC or to try to boot Windows itself from the SSD. Those are different jobs: Microsoft’s supported installation-media process uses a USB drive to install Windows onto a separate target disk, while running Windows from the external SSD is a portable-workspace workaround that Microsoft no longer supports as Windows To Go.

Microsoft’s current download page specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for its Media Creation Tool. Microsoft: Download Windows 11 |
| Carry Windows on the external SSD and try to boot a PC from it | Use a third-party utility such as Rufus’s Windows To Go creation option. | This is not a supported Windows 11 Windows To Go feature. Install Windows 11 on a PC using the external SSD as the target
For the standard installation, use a USB drive as Windows installation media and select the external SSD as the Windows destination in Setup. This is different from creating a portable Windows workspace: once installed, the SSD is still the target drive, and whether a PC can boot from it depends on that PC’s firmware and configuration. If you intend to use the SSD with one computer, check the PC manufacturer’s boot instructions and confirm Windows Setup identifies the correct disk before proceeding.
Create the installation media
- Back up files on the USB drive you plan to use. Microsoft warns that the Media Creation Tool deletes its contents.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and use the Media Creation Tool to make bootable USB installation media. The page specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB.
- Wait for the tool to finish, then safely disconnect the installer drive. Keep the external SSD you intend to install Windows on separate and clearly identifiable.
Boot from the installer and select the SSD
- Connect the installer USB and the external SSD to the target PC.
- Restart the PC and open its boot menu, or change boot order in firmware settings, to start from the USB installer. The key varies by manufacturer; follow the PC’s instructions. Microsoft’s flash-drive installation guide covers booting from USB.
- Follow Windows Setup. When asked where to install Windows, identify the external SSD by its capacity and other available details. Selecting or formatting the wrong disk can erase its data. Do not continue until you are certain the selected target is the external SSD and you have backed up anything important.
Microsoft recommends installing on hardware that meets Windows 11’s requirements. Its download page warns that installing on an ineligible device may cause compatibility problems and affect support and update eligibility. Check the current requirements and compatibility guidance on the Windows 11 download page.

If you want Windows itself to reside on the external SSD and attempt to boot from it, Microsoft’s old Windows To Go feature is not the supported route for Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows To Go was removed beginning with Windows 10, version 2004, and its documentation says the feature did not support feature updates. Rufus documents a third-party Windows To Go creation option, but using it is a workaround—not an official Windows 11 Windows To Go feature.

What to check before attempting it
- Back up the SSD. Rufus creation can alter or erase the selected drive. Verify the selected device before starting.
- Check the host PC. USB boot may need to be enabled or selected in firmware. The available settings and boot-menu keys vary by computer.
- Allow for host-specific results. Rufus notes that behavior can depend on the Windows image and host environment. A drive that boots on one PC may not boot on another.
- Consider storage performance. Rufus warns that an SSD-based USB drive needs sufficiently high random-write performance to run Windows. This is a qualitative warning, not a performance rating for any particular drive.
- Do not assume support or updates. The available documentation does not establish universal portability, guaranteed updates, licensing outcomes, expected speed, or long-term drive reliability for a Rufus-created Windows 11 workspace.
For Rufus’s documented options and caveats, see its FAQ and official website.

These details apply to making Windows installation media, not to choosing the capacity of an external SSD that will hold a running Windows system. Microsoft’s manual flash-drive method calls for at least 5 GB of free space on the USB or MiniSD media and instructs users to format it as FAT32 for BIOS or UEFI boot. Microsoft’s consumer Media Creation Tool page instead specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB.

FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file limit. If the installation image’s install.wim exceeds that limit, Microsoft’s manual method describes copying the other files and splitting the WIM into smaller .swm files. Follow the complete steps in Microsoft’s Install Windows from a Flash Drive guide rather than applying the workaround to the external system SSD.
