A Gemma-based conversation repairer for Aishwarya should retrieve relevant, traceable relationship memories and offer a short, user-editable rewrite—not decide who is right or invent shared history. Gemma does not inherently remember earlier turns: the application must provide the relevant conversation context again for each response. The design below is a technical proposal, not a validated system for repairing adult relationship conflicts.
What the repairer should do
Keep the system’s job narrow. Given a message the user wants help with, it should identify a possible misunderstanding or mismatch with reliable context, then suggest a concise alternative that preserves the speaker’s intended meaning. Aishwarya should review, edit, or reject that suggestion before it is sent.
That is different from having a model infer motives, assign blame, diagnose a relationship, or speak as though it knows what happened. When the context is incomplete or memories conflict, the safer response is to ask the user a clarifying question or provide no rewrite.

How Gemma handles conversation history
Gemma inference should be treated as stateless across separate requests unless the application explicitly supplies context. Google AI for Developers’ Building a chatbot with Gemma explains that relevant history or pertinent parts must be included in each prompt. It puts the point plainly: “To overcome this limitation and enable Gemma models to maintain context in a conversation, they must be explicitly provided with the relevant context in each prompt.” Its tutorial demonstrates maintaining user and model turns in a chat-state object and building each prompt from that history.

Google’s Gemma formatting guidance documents <start_of_turn> and <end_of_turn> markers for instruction-tuned models. It describes user and model roles, and says system-level instructions should be included in the initial user prompt rather than sent as a separate system role. These are format details for the documented model generation; check the formatter for the exact Gemma version you deploy.
There are two distinct kinds of context to manage: the recent dialogue needed to understand what is being said now, and longer-lived memories that may help interpret the exchange. Sending every past turn is simple, but can include irrelevant or sensitive material. Retrieving selected episodes is more compact, but the retrieval step can miss important context. Neither approach makes a generated claim true by itself.

A practical architecture for grounded repair
Keep the memory store separate from model-generated prose. Treat retrieval as a distinct operation that returns records with provenance, not as an invitation for the model to fill gaps from conversational plausibility. A workable request flow is:

- Receive the proposed message and task. Record the message Aishwarya wants help with and whether she wants a tone adjustment, a clarification, or a repair suggestion. Do not infer consent to send the result.
- Collect immediate context. Include the relevant recent turns, with speaker labels and enough sequence to understand the exchange. Apply a defined limit rather than assuming the entire conversation will fit.
- Retrieve candidate memories. Search relationship episodes and facts for relevance to the message and entities involved. Keep the retrieval result distinct from the recent dialogue.
- Check evidence and uncertainty. Retain records’ source turns, timestamps, confidence or uncertainty, and whether a person confirmed them. Exclude weak or contradictory candidates from factual assertions; surface uncertainty or ask for clarification instead.
- Generate a constrained suggestion. Ask Gemma to identify the specific mismatch, preserve the speaker’s intended meaning, and propose a short alternative only when the supplied context supports it.
- Show the result for review. Present the suggested wording as an edit, not an action taken. Let Aishwarya change or discard it before any message is sent.
- Apply memory controls. Allow the people represented in the memory to correct or delete records. Store a new memory only through an explicit, defined process rather than treating every generated interpretation as a confirmed fact.
The separation between dialogue context and retrieved facts has a precedent in Microsoft Research’s 2017 paper A Knowledge-Grounded Neural Conversation Model, which encodes dialogue history, retrieves and weights relevant facts, and conditions response generation on both. The paper is a conceptual architecture precedent, not a performance benchmark for Gemma.
Represent memories as evidence-bearing records
An episode record should carry enough information for the application to explain where it came from and to avoid turning an inference into a remembered fact. For example, a proposed record structure could include:

}This is an illustrative schema, not a required Gemma format. Store the original source or a usable reference to it, and distinguish a directly stated fact from a model-generated summary or inference. If a memory is disputed, stale, or ambiguous, do not silently promote it to ground truth.

The 2019 ACL paper Memory Grounded Conversational Reasoning demonstrates another useful pattern: episodic memory nodes linked to entity nodes, with dialogue-conditioned paths used to activate candidate memories. Its demonstration includes surfacing related memories in conversation. For a repairer, the useful design lesson is to keep a trace from each memory-backed claim to the record that supports it. That research demonstration does not validate this specific application.
Separate retrieval from response editing
Retrieval decides what records may be relevant; response generation decides what to do with the supplied evidence. Keep these as separate stages so that a fluent rewrite cannot conceal a retrieval failure. The model should be told explicitly that retrieved memories are evidence with varying reliability, not facts to embellish.

Transferable Persona-Grounded Dialogues via Grounded Minimal Edits (2021) proposes minimally editing a coherent response to better match a persona or grounded concept. In its studied persona-grounded datasets and transfer settings, the authors report improved persona consistency while preserving knowledge and empathy. This supports considering a minimal-edit design: change only the part that conflicts with reliable context, and avoid adding a narrative. It does not establish that such edits repair emotionally sensitive adult relationship conversations.
The available repair findings are narrower still. Agrawal et al.’s 2025 SemDial paper, Identifying Repair Opportunities in Child-Caregiver Interactions, reports 59 caregiver-initiated repairs; 95% followed invalid questions. Caregivers initiated repair in about 36% of 154 repair opportunities in that study. Most tested models performed poorly at identifying invalid questions. The passage reports GPT-4o at around 0.75 and says Gemma-2 performed somewhat better than other models, but gives no precise Gemma-2 score there. The authors report human inter-annotation agreement of Cohen’s κ = 0.75, which they say corresponds to accuracy of 0.84.

Those measurements concern a child-caregiver task and dataset. They are not expected scores for adult relationships, another language, or a deployed product, and they do not show that Gemma can safely or accurately mediate adult conflict. The adult relationship use case remains a design proposal, not an efficacy claim.
How to evaluate the system before relying on it
There is no validated adult-relationship threshold established by the cited work. Evaluate the components separately, then assess whether the complete experience is useful and appropriately restrained.
- Retrieval precision: Are the returned episodes relevant to the current exchange, and are contradictory or stale records handled visibly?
- Unsupported-memory assertions: Does the output ever describe an inference or an unconfirmed recollection as something both people definitely experienced?
- Repair detection: Can the system identify an actual ambiguity or mismatch without treating disagreement itself as an error?
- Meaning preservation: Does the edit retain the user’s central point instead of making it more conciliatory, accusatory, or certain than intended?
- User-rated usefulness: Do people find the suggestion understandable and helpful, and can they reject it without friction?
- Harmful overreach: Does the system speculate about motives, pressure someone to reconcile, or present itself as an authority on the relationship?
Include cases where the memory is missing, wrong, contested, or irrelevant—not just examples with a clear supporting episode. Log which records were retrieved and which ones the model relied on, subject to the application’s privacy rules, so failures can be traced to retrieval or generation rather than guessed at from the final wording alone.

Choosing local, notebook, or cloud inference
The available documentation does not establish one required computer, model size, current cost, or comparative performance for this design. Google’s Gemma chatbot tutorial uses a Gemma 2B example and names Colab notebooks, Kaggle notebooks, and Google Cloud as possible inference paths; it notes that larger models may require premium GPU access in Colab. Those are documented setup routes, not a current hardware benchmark or a recommendation for a specific provider.

Relationship memories are sensitive by design, so make privacy choices explicit: limit what is retained, restrict access, provide correction and deletion controls, and decide how long records persist. These are design recommendations for this proposed memory domain, not a privacy standard established by the cited papers. Choose deployment only after weighing those requirements against latency, scale, and available compute.
