Choose GROQ mode when your Sanity content is structured and its schema shows where answers live. Choose Knowledge Base mode when useful information is spread across prose and multiple sources that should be prepared and reconciled before a conversation. Sanity Context gives an external agent read-only access to a scoped view of content; it does not run the agent loop, write to your dataset, or guarantee that the model will never guess.
How do GROQ mode and Knowledge Base mode differ?
The key difference is when and how information is organized. GROQ queries your dataset when the agent needs an answer. A Knowledge Base is built ahead of the conversation from selected sources, then provides entries for the agent to retrieve.
| Decision | GROQ mode | Knowledge Base mode |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Structured, consistent content with a schema that identifies relevant fields and relationships. | Answers dispersed across prose in selected datasets, websites, or files. |
| Retrieval timing | Queries the dataset at request time. | Retrieves from an index built from selected sources ahead of the question. |
| Typical task | Filter records and follow schema relationships—for example, finding “Size L latex gloves, under $200 a pallet.” | Navigate an outline and retrieve prepared entries; the Knowledge Base can reconcile information from its selected sources. |
| Setup consideration | Requires project content and a deployed schema. Sanity specifies Studio 5.1.0 or later for server-side schema support. | Requires an enabled, opt-in beta and a readable Knowledge Base. |
| Ongoing care | Maintain useful schemas and source data for the questions the agent should answer. | Keep sources and the generated index current; review conflicts and build issues. |
For the product’s current descriptions, see Sanity’s retrieval modes, Knowledge Base documentation, and Context setup guide.

When should you use GROQ mode?
Use GROQ when the answer depends on identifiable fields, filters, or relationships in your Sanity schema. It is a natural fit for product catalogs, records, or other consistent content where the agent can find the right data by exploring the schema and querying the dataset.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because GROQ runs against the dataset at request time, changes to the source data can be reflected in later queries without waiting for a Knowledge Base build. That does not remove the need to keep the schema meaningful or to configure which content the agent is allowed to access.
GROQ prerequisites
- Your Sanity project and dataset need content and a deployed schema.
- Sanity’s setup documentation specifies Sanity Studio 5.1.0 or later for server-side schema support. See the Context MCP reference for setup details.
- Configure a server-side GROQ filter to restrict what the agent can retrieve. A prompt asking the model not to access certain records is not an access boundary.
When is a Knowledge Base a better fit?
Use a Knowledge Base when an answer is not neatly stored in one record or set of fields—for example, when relevant explanations are scattered through prose across selected datasets, websites, or files. The build process reads chosen sources, resolves conflicts, and creates entries that the agent can retrieve. Its purpose and outline influence which information is central.

This preparation can make dispersed material easier for an agent to navigate, but it also creates an update responsibility: keep the sources and generated index current, and review conflicts or build problems. Knowledge Bases are an opt-in beta, according to Sanity’s documentation last updated September 18, 2026. Availability, features, and limits may change before general availability; consult the Knowledge Base documentation for the current status.
What does Sanity Context provide—and what does the agent provide?
Sanity Context is a hosted, read-only Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. The application builder supplies the MCP-capable agent harness and model; Context supplies a configured view of Sanity content. It does not run the agent loop or create or update dataset documents. Sanity’s Context overview describes the service and setup.

- Configure a Context MCP. In the Sanity Dashboard, enable Context for the organization and create a Context MCP. Define the available sources; add instructions and a GROQ filter where appropriate.
- Connect the agent securely. Use an organization API token with Context Viewer permissions. Sanity says project tokens are refused, identifies Context Viewer as the least privilege that works, and instructs builders to keep the token server-side. See Content access and security.
- Meet the selected mode’s requirements. For GROQ, deploy the schema. For Knowledge Base mode, enable the beta and ensure the token can read at least one Knowledge Base.
- Let the agent orient itself. At the start of a conversation, mode-aware initial context can provide a compressed schema overview for GROQ or an outline for a Knowledge Base.
- Use the mode’s retrieval tools. GROQ mode offers schema exploration, GROQ querying, and tools for reading large array or Portable Text fields. Knowledge Base mode provides access to entries in the prebuilt index. The Context MCP tools reference describes the available tools.
- Decide how results appear to users. The application can render structured results as interface components instead of asking the model to narrate every field. Sanity discusses this and other implementation guidance in Context patterns and best practices.
How do you reduce unsupported answers?
Retrieval gives an agent access to relevant content; it does not by itself ensure that every answer is supported by that content or prevent the model from guessing. Source quality, model behavior, instructions, and correct tool use still matter. Set clear boundaries and explicitly tell the agent what to do when the sources do not answer a question.
Write instructions the agent can follow
Specify the intended audience, tone, subject boundaries, and fallback behavior. Sanity’s example pattern is: “Only answer questions about product documentation; for anything else, suggest contacting support.” Adapt it to your service, such as directing users to a support channel when the approved material does not contain an answer. See Sanity Context patterns and best practices.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Enforce access in configuration
Expose only the sources the agent should read. In GROQ mode, use the server-side filter to enforce the data boundary rather than relying on an instruction in the prompt. Keep the organization token on the server, not in a browser or other client-side code. These controls limit the content available through Context; they do not guarantee that the model’s wording is accurate.

Which mode should you choose?
- Choose GROQ if answers map cleanly to structured records, schema fields, and relationships, and request-time queries suit the task.
- Choose a Knowledge Base if users need answers assembled from prose across selected sources and you can maintain a prepared index. Account for its opt-in beta status.
- Define a fallback either way. State what the agent covers and where it should direct users when the accessible material does not answer the question.
