There is no evidence here to support a claim that one service made the other pointless after a week of testing. The practical choice depends on the network you need: Tailscale documents identity-based connectivity with subnet routers and exit nodes, while ZeroTier describes a virtual Ethernet layer supporting Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking. Neither description proves that one is faster or easier to use. Compare them against your devices, routes, access controls, and current plan costs.

How the two services approach networking

Tailscale: identity-based connectivity, with optional routing features

Tailscale describes its platform as identity-based connectivity. Its documentation includes subnet routers and exit nodes as network features. A subnet router can make devices on a physical network reachable when installing the client on each device is impractical. Tailscale’s subnet-router documentation explains that use case.

An exit node is different: it routes a device’s non-Tailscale internet traffic through a selected device in the tailnet. Tailscale documents user opt-in and administrator approval requirements. That can matter if you need a device to use another location’s internet connection, rather than merely reach devices on a private network. See Tailscale’s exit-node documentation.

ZeroTier: virtual Ethernet networking

ZeroTier describes its protocol as an Ethernet virtualization layer, with virtual Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking. This is a distinction in the way the vendor presents its network model, not proof of better performance or simpler setup. Whether it matters depends on the network design and the connectivity you need. ZeroTier explains its protocol in its protocol documentation.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Which one should you choose?

Start with the job, not a universal winner. The documented capabilities suggest different questions to ask before choosing:

  • Need access to devices that cannot run a client? Consider whether Tailscale’s subnet-router approach matches the physical network and routes you need.
  • Need to route ordinary internet traffic through a remote device? Check whether Tailscale’s exit-node workflow, including its opt-in and administrator-approval requirements, suits your setup.
  • Designing around virtual Layer 2 or Layer 3 networking? Evaluate whether ZeroTier’s virtual Ethernet model fits the topology and applications involved.
  • Need a verdict on speed, reliability, or ease? The available documentation does not establish a comparative winner. Measure both in your actual environment.

These are decision prompts, not claims that either product cannot support a particular deployment. Confirm current platform support, route behavior, and administrative controls in each service’s documentation before relying on them.

How to run a fair side-by-side trial

A useful comparison controls for the parts of the setup that can otherwise skew the result. Record the date, operating systems, account provider, network topology, and plan used for each service.

  1. Choose one real task. For example, reach a device on a home LAN that cannot run a client, connect devices directly, or route internet traffic through a remote machine. Keep the task the same for both trials.
  2. Onboard the same devices. Record the steps and elapsed setup time, including account creation, network configuration, permissions, and any administrator approval.
  3. Test the relevant routes and controls. Confirm which devices can reach each other, whether a subnet route or full internet route is needed, and what access-control or administrative settings are required.
  4. Measure performance in your environment. If performance matters, record latency and throughput under repeatable conditions. Note whether the connection is direct or relayed where that is observable, and test reconnects and mobile behavior. Do not generalize a result from one network to others.
  5. Calculate the cost for your actual scale. Use the number of users, devices, and networks you expect, and verify current plan limits and billing terms for both services.

No comparative benchmark or controlled week-long test is established by the vendor documentation cited here. A measured result is useful only when its platform, topology, date, and conditions are reported alongside it.

What the security documentation does—and does not—establish

ZeroTier says joining and using its networks does not require account registration or personal information; hosted network administration can be set up with an email address. That is ZeroTier’s own description of its service, not an independent security assessment. See ZeroTier’s security page. For either service, assess the access controls and administration model against your own requirements rather than treating one architectural description as a security verdict.
