Which app is better for handwritten notes?
Both advertise handwritten note-taking and recognition features, so the distinction is less about whether handwriting is supported and more about what happens to your notes afterward. Noteshelf emphasizes handwriting conversion and recognition, with a stated 65-language offering. Notability lists handwriting recognition, handwritten math conversion, and handwriting search, with some platform restrictions noted in its plan comparison.

The 65-language figure is a Noteshelf product claim, not an independent test of recognition accuracy. If recognition is essential, check the feature’s availability in the version and plan you intend to use, and try it with your handwriting and language before relying on it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do their audio note features differ?
Notability explicitly lists audio recording, transcription, and playback sync. That combination is useful when you want to revisit recorded material alongside the notes made during it. Noteshelf advertises recording audio while taking notes, but the reviewed listings do not confirm the same time-synced playback workflow. Do not assume the two apps handle audio identically based on recording alone.
Which is better for annotating PDFs and documents?
Both advertise document annotation. Notability names PDFs, documents, and slides. Noteshelf lists PDF and image annotation, while its App Store listing also names DOC and PPT import; its Android listing advertises a document scanner.

Noteshelf advertises AI generation, page summaries, translation, and explanations. The feature lists do not establish identical tasks, quality, or usage limits between the apps. Compare the exact job you need—such as making flashcards, summarizing a page, or translating content—and verify its availability in your chosen plan and platform.
Do Notability and Noteshelf sync across devices?
Platform availability and cross-device syncing are separate questions. Notability advertises Mac, Windows, iPad, iPhone, Android, and web access, while its plan comparison ties sync across devices to Notability Cloud. Noteshelf has Apple and Android offerings and an official Windows link; its Android listing describes Google Drive sync across Android devices. That Android sync description should not be read as a promise of seamless syncing across Apple, Windows, and Android.

Prices, plan terms, and feature entitlements can change and may differ across platforms and regions; check the relevant store or live plan page before buying.
Which app should you choose?
- Choose Notability if audio recording with transcription and synchronized playback, built-in study tools, or its advertised range of device platforms best matches your priorities.
- Choose Noteshelf if notebook customization, templates, structured organization, or its advertised handwriting recognition and document tools matter more to you.
- Compare the exact plan and device combination if you rely on cross-device syncing, AI features, or handwriting conversion; availability and limits are not uniform across plans and platforms.
Vendor feature lists cannot establish which app feels faster, writes more naturally, or performs more reliably. For handwriting or annotation on a compatible iPad, an Apple Pencil or compatible stylus is optional; check your device’s compatibility rather than treating a stylus as a requirement.
