An AI browser extension adds artificial-intelligence assistance to a web browser, often by working with the page or tab you have open. It is a descriptive term, not a formal technical standard, so capabilities and data practices depend on the individual extension.

What is an AI browser extension?

A browser extension is software installed in a browser to add or change features. An AI browser extension applies AI to browser-related tasks, such as answering questions about a webpage or assisting with website workflows. OpenAI’s documentation provides examples of an assistant using an open tab or website context and of side-chat features in supported browsers, but those examples describe that product rather than defining every extension. OpenAI’s browser documentation also distinguishes browsers that support side chat from those that support browser workflows without it.

There is no standardized definition established by the sources reviewed. The label alone does not tell you which AI model an extension uses, what it can do, or how it handles information.

What can one do in a browser?

Depending on the product and browser, an extension may use the contents of a page as context for an assistant, provide a chat panel alongside browsing, or carry out supported workflows on websites under the product’s controls. These functions are not universal: an extension may offer different features in different browsers, and some browsers may support workflows without offering a side chat.

OpenAI’s documentation describes its browser-extension workflows across Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. Availability and features can change, so consult the product’s current documentation for the browser you use.

Why do permissions matter?

Permissions describe what an extension may be able to access. Depending on what it requests, that can include website data, browsing history, open tabs, or URLs. A permission warning signals potential access; by itself, it is not proof that an extension is malicious. Google Chrome Web Store Help puts it this way: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Users can deny permissions. Google’s permission guidance explains these warnings and access categories.

Before installing, compare the requested access with the features you expect to use. An extension that summarizes webpages may need some access to page content, for example, but broad access should still be explained clearly. Chrome Web Store policy says developers should request the narrowest permissions necessary and disclose how they collect, use, and share data. Chrome Web Store policies set out those expectations.

What happens to browsing data?

Do not assume that all AI browser extensions send, retain, or share the same information. Check the extension’s disclosures and the product documentation for what is collected, when page content becomes part of an AI request or conversation, and whether information is stored or shared.

For a product-specific example, OpenAI says its extension stores browser activity when that activity becomes part of ChatGPT context; the listed information can include page text, screenshots, tool calls, summaries, or messages. This describes OpenAI’s product documentation only—it is not a general rule for AI extensions. Read OpenAI’s explanation of its browser extension for its stated handling and controls.

How to assess an AI browser extension

  • Check browser compatibility: Confirm the extension supports your browser and identify which features work there.
  • Match permissions to features: Review access to website data, history, tabs, and URLs. Ask whether each requested permission is necessary for the function you want.
  • Read data disclosures: Look for what information is collected, how it is used, and whether it is shared or stored.
  • Review website controls: If the extension can work with websites, find out how that access is controlled and what actions it can take.
  • Use the browser’s permission controls: You can deny a requested permission; consider whether the extension remains useful without it.

These checks are more informative than the “AI” label alone. The term identifies a broad kind of browser software, not a promise of a particular capability, permission level, or privacy practice.
