A wood vertical file cabinet can add compact paper storage to an office or home workspace, but “wood” alone does not tell you how it is built or what it will hold. Compare the exact materials, outside dimensions, drawer layout, file-size compatibility, and hardware before choosing a model.
What makes a file cabinet vertical?
Vertical and lateral describe the cabinet’s proportions, not its material. A vertical file is a narrow, upright unit with drawers stacked high. A lateral file is wider than it is deep, so it uses more wall width and generally less height for a similar drawer arrangement.
The U.S. International Trade Commission’s 2019 report, citing BIFMA’s definition, describes lateral files as having a body width greater than its body depth. It gives typical lateral dimensions of 30–42 inches wide and 18–20 inches deep. Those figures are category context, not dimensions for every current cabinet or for vertical files. Wood-colored furniture is not necessarily solid wood. File cabinets may use solid wood, engineered-wood substrate, plywood in some components, or laminate on the case and fronts. A product can combine several of these materials: for example, a described wood lateral file from Herman Miller has a laminate top, case, and front. That is a lateral model, not a vertical one. Look for a materials breakdown that identifies the construction of the case, drawer boxes, fronts, and finish. If the listing only says “wood,” “wood finish,” or “wood look,” it may not establish that the cabinet is solid wood. Vermont Woods Studios identifies its Andover file cabinet as solid wood and offers a two-drawer vertical configuration; its page also describes a lateral configuration, so check that you are viewing the vertical version when reviewing dimensions or ordering. Match the footprint and drawer count to your work
Measure the space available, including room for drawers to open fully and for you to stand in front of the cabinet. Compare the model’s exterior width, depth, and height rather than relying on a category label or a photo. Vertical cabinets are designed to concentrate storage in a smaller floor footprint than wide lateral units, but exact dimensions vary.

Examples in the cited product listings include two-, three-, and four-drawer vertical configurations. Choose the number of drawers based on how you separate active paperwork from records you access less often; also check each drawer’s usable height and whether the cabinet’s overall height works beneath shelves or a desk. Do not assume a cabinet accepts every common paper format just because it is called a file cabinet. Check whether the exact model supports letter, legal, or A4 files, how files are oriented, and whether hanging-file rails or other hardware are included. Drawer dimensions and rail arrangements determine practical capacity; exterior dimensions alone do not.

A UNICOR specification describes a four-drawer vertical file with hanging-file hardware, birch plywood drawer construction, and an engineered-wood substrate. Those are details of that specified unit, not features to expect across the category. UNICOR file specification

Security and safety features are model-specific. Confirm whether a lock is included, which drawers it secures, and whether the listing describes an interlock or anti-tip feature. A central lock appears in the cited UNICOR vertical-file specification. Herman Miller’s described lateral model has a positive interlock that allows only one drawer to open at a time; that feature should not be presumed on vertical cabinets or other products.

For any cabinet, review the manufacturer’s instructions for loading and anchoring, especially if children may be nearby or several drawers will hold heavy paper. The available product details do not establish that every wood vertical file includes an interlock, lock, or tip-prevention hardware.

A practical checklist before buying
- Construction: Identify materials for the case, drawer boxes, fronts, and surface finish. Treat “solid wood” as a claim to verify, not a synonym for wood-look or laminate.
- Orientation and fit: Confirm the unit is vertical and measure its exact exterior dimensions against the room and drawer-opening clearance.
- Storage layout: Check the number of drawers and usable drawer dimensions against the volume and organization of your records.
- Paper compatibility: Verify letter, legal, or A4 capacity, file orientation, and whether hanging rails are included.
- Hardware: Check the lock, drawer slides, interlock, and any safety or anchoring guidance for the exact model.
