The right voice-over microphone depends on your room, recording chain, and preferred connection—not a universal sound-quality ranking. Three models to consider are the Shure SM7B, RØDE NT1, and Audio-Technica AT2020. Manufacturer specifications support different use cases for each, but they do not establish which will sound best with your voice.
How to choose a voice-over microphone
Start with the recording environment and the equipment you already own. Then compare microphone type, pickup pattern, connection, and the full cost of the setup. A cardioid microphone is designed to pick up sound primarily from the front, but that does not remove room noise or fix reverberation in an untreated space.
- Room: Consider how much background sound and room echo you need to manage.
- Connection: Check whether the microphone uses XLR or USB and whether your recording setup supports it.
- Gain: Account for any preamp or interface requirements, not just the microphone itself.
- Voice: If possible, audition a microphone with your own voice and room. The manufacturer specifications below are not a substitute for a controlled listening comparison.
Three microphones to consider for voice-over
Shure SM7B: dynamic XLR for speech and professional audio
Shure describes the SM7B as a dynamic, cardioid XLR microphone suited to speech and professional audio. For voice-over work with an SM7-series microphone, Shure recommends a preamp with at least 60 dB of gain, so include a compatible interface or preamp in your setup budget. RØDE lists voice-over among the NT1’s applications and describes its pattern as tight cardioid, with low self-noise. RØDE’s general guidance says studio condensers such as the NT1 suit voice-over and studio recording, where detail capture is useful. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test. Check the exact NT1 generation before buying: RØDE’s NT1 product page and NT1 Signature Series page refer to separate product listings. Audio-Technica AT2020: cardioid condenser with XLR and USB versions to distinguish
Audio-Technica describes the AT2020 as a cardioid condenser. Its cardioid pickup pattern reduces sound pickup from the sides and rear; it does not guarantee isolation from unwanted sound in the room. Check the listing carefully because the AT2020 name appears in both XLR and USB product variants. See Audio-Technica’s AT2020 product information.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The available manufacturer information helps identify each microphone’s type, pattern, connection, and intended applications. It does not provide a controlled head-to-head listening test or establish which model is best for a particular voice, room, or recording chain. Do not treat claims such as “low self-noise” or “reduces side and rear pickup” as a guarantee of a particular finished recording.

Before choosing, confirm the exact model and connection, check that your interface or preamp meets the microphone’s requirements, and try the microphone in the space where you will record if you can. Model details and retail availability may vary by generation and region.
