The best UI design tool for a team is the one that fits its whole process: designing interfaces, maintaining reusable systems, prototyping, gathering feedback, and handing work to developers. Compare those tasks alongside platform needs, AI usage limits, and the mix of paid seats your team will need. Figma and Sketch document capabilities across several workflow stages, but the right choice depends on how your team works—not a universal ranking.
What should your team compare?
Start with the work your team actually needs to complete. A UI design tool with AI may help with particular tasks, but generated screens alone do not show whether a tool supports your design system, review process, or developer handoff.
- Core design work: Interface construction, reusable components and libraries, design systems, and prototypes.
- Collaboration and review: Real-time co-editing, browser-based access, comments, version history, and how many people need paid access.
- Developer handoff: What developers can inspect, whether handoff is included, and whether those users need a separately priced seat.
- Platform and operating model: Browser or native app requirements, supported devices, local versus cloud files, and organizational security or procurement constraints.
- AI workflow and economics: Which tasks AI supports, whether the output stays editable and aligned with your system, what usage is included, and what additional use costs.
- Lifecycle and migration: Whether the product is actively developed and what moving existing files and habits might involve.
Vendor feature descriptions can establish what a product says it offers; they do not establish comparative AI quality, speed, reliability, accessibility, productivity, or migration effort. Treat those as questions for your own evaluation rather than assumed advantages.

Both vendors describe tools for multiple stages of interface design, but their operating models differ. Figma’s current product lineup includes Figma Design, Figma Make, Figma Draw, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Motion, Figma Sites, and Figma Buzz. Sketch divides work among a Mac app, web app, and iOS app.

Figma’s pricing page describes Professional as suitable for professionals working solo or together. It lists unlimited files and projects for one team, team-wide libraries, advanced prototyping, Dev Mode inspection, and an MCP Server. Organization and Enterprise plans add more centralized team or organization functions. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent comparative results. See Figma’s pricing page.
Seat categories matter when estimating team cost. Figma lists Professional Full seats at $16 per month, Dev seats at $12 per month, and Collab seats at $3 per month. These are USD prices checked October 7, 2026; plan terms can change. Confirm the current price, billing conditions, and entitlements on the pricing page before budgeting.

Sketch: design on Mac, review in the browser
Sketch says interface design, reusable components and libraries, design systems, and prototyping happen in its Mac app. Its web app supports viewing, inspection, and comments from any browser and platform; the iOS app previews documents and prototypes and can mirror Mac edits. That makes the distinction between the Mac-based design environment and browser-based review important when your team has mixed devices. See Sketch’s product information.

How much does a UI design tool cost per seat?
Compare the total for the roles and access your team needs, not just the lowest advertised seat price. Figma’s listed seats distinguish design, developer, and collaboration access. Sketch lists editor subscription plans as well as a Mac-only license with a different feature set.

How should AI features and credit limits affect the decision?
Figma says its AI features use a credit system shared across AI features and products. Its Starter plan lists 150 AI credits per day, up to 500 per month. The allowance is a usage limit, not a guarantee of a fixed number of useful outputs: consumption depends on feature and model.

The page states that its credit-consumption rates are current as of October 6, 2026. Check Figma’s AI credits guidance for the current rules, and include expected additional usage in your budget.

For any shortlisted tool, test AI against real team tasks. Check whether the result remains editable, fits the team’s component and library practices, and can move through review and handoff. The available vendor information does not establish which tool produces better or faster results.
What platform and product-lifecycle constraints matter?
Match the app to how people work
Sketch’s design work is in its Mac app, while its web app supports inspection, viewing, and comments from browsers on any platform. If designers need to create on non-Mac devices, or if your organization requires a particular local-file or cloud workflow, verify that the actual app and sharing model meet the requirement before standardizing.
Account for Adobe XD’s maintenance status
Adobe says XD remains in maintenance mode: it is not investing in ongoing development or shipping new features, but will continue bug fixes and necessary security or privacy updates for existing customers. The Adobe FAQ was last updated September 11, 2026. For a new team standard, consider that lifecycle status and migration risk; for an existing XD workflow, verify current support and file requirements. See Adobe’s XD FAQ.
How can your team make a practical choice?
Use a small, representative evaluation rather than choosing from feature lists alone. This process helps expose seat, platform, and handoff issues before they become team-wide costs.
- Choose two or three real tasks. Include a representative design-system change, a prototype or interface flow, and a review-to-developer handoff if those are part of your work.
- Include the people who use each stage. Have a designer, a developer, and a stakeholder or reviewer participate so that design, inspection, and feedback are all exercised.
- Run the same tasks in each shortlisted tool. Use your own project context where practical, and note where work depends on a particular app, device, or plan.
- Score each option against the criteria that matter to your team. Compare core design work, collaboration, handoff, platform fit, AI workflow and usage costs, seat mix, and lifecycle.
- Calculate the actual recurring cost. Apply the current billing term and relevant plan entitlements to the number and type of seats you expect to need; include likely AI usage beyond included credits.
- Verify migration and procurement requirements. Confirm file needs, organizational requirements, and current vendor terms before adopting a team standard.
The evaluation is most useful when it reflects your team’s actual constraints. A lower editor price or an appealing AI feature does not settle whether the whole workflow and required access fit.
