The right suction pool cleaner is the one that matches your pool’s connection, surface, pump flow, debris and layout—not a universal “best” model. Before comparing features, confirm that the cleaner fits your skimmer or dedicated vacuum line, that your pump can supply the required flow, and that its hose can reach the whole pool.
How to choose a suction pool cleaner
A suction-side cleaner connects to a skimmer or dedicated suction line and uses the pool’s circulation system to move and collect debris. Pentair describes both connection options in its suction-cleaner lineup; Zodiac lists skimmer or 1.5-inch vacuum-line connections for the models in its comparison.
- Connection: Identify the available fitting and confirm compatibility with the cleaner.
- Pool surface and shape: Check the manufacturer’s surface and pool-type specifications. A model specified for inground pools is not automatically suitable for an aboveground pool.
- Pump flow: Verify your pump’s output and follow the cleaner’s manual. Variable-speed and low-speed operation varies by model.
- Debris: Consider what your pool collects—such as fine sand and silt or larger leaves—and compare the manufacturer’s stated debris capabilities.
- Coverage and reach: Check whether the cleaner is intended for the floor, walls or tile line; measure the route to the farthest area and follow the required hose-length guidance.
- Maintenance: Look up the exact model’s diaphragm, hose, flow-control and other replacement parts before buying.

Which models may fit your pool?
For an inground pool with mixed surfaces
The Zodiac MX8 is a candidate if you have an inground pool with concrete, tile, vinyl or fiberglass surfaces and a compatible skimmer or 1.5-inch vacuum-line connection. Zodiac lists 39 feet of hose and markets the cleaner for low-flow, two-speed and variable-speed pumps. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims; verify the pump requirements and hose setup in the current manual.
For low-speed pump operation
Zodiac marks its listed comparison models as compatible with low-flow pumps, while its G3 page describes a self-adjusting FlowKeeper valve for low-speed operation. Pentair describes the Rebel’s hydraulic design for lower-speed operation on variable-speed and two-speed pumps. These descriptions do not establish that a particular cleaner will work with every pump: check your pump’s actual output and the model’s instructions.

For floor, walls and steps
Zodiac lists the G3 for floors, walls and steps, while its comparison describes the T5 Duo and G3 as floor-and-wall cleaners. The MX models in that comparison are listed for floor, wall and tile-line cleaning. Choose according to the areas you need cleaned and confirm the exact model’s limitations.
For larger debris or a particular cleaning path
Do not assume that a wider cleaning footprint means better debris pickup for every pool. Zodiac lists footprints of 15 inches for MX8 models, 10 inches for MX6 models, and 17 inches for T5 Duo and G3. Its comparison also separates debris categories by model. Match those specifications to the debris your pool actually collects, and consult the product page for the exact model rather than assuming all suction cleaners handle large leaves equally.

Check fit before buying
- Identify the suction connection. Confirm whether you will connect at the skimmer or a dedicated vacuum line, then match the fitting to the cleaner’s specifications.
- Confirm pool type and surface. Check the manufacturer’s limits for inground or aboveground use and for your pool’s surface materials.
- Check pump flow. Compare your pump’s output and operating speed with the cleaner’s manual. For the G3, Zodiac directs owners to use a flow gauge and adjust the FlowKeeper setting.
- Measure hose reach. Follow the model’s hose-assembly instructions and measure the route to the farthest area, allowing for the required leader hose and routing. Too little or incorrect hose length can affect coverage and navigation.
- Check the parts list. Find the exact model’s manual and parts diagram so you know which components are specific to that cleaner.
Troubleshoot slow movement or missed areas
Before replacing a cleaner that has slowed down or stopped covering the pool, check the circulation path and the model-specific wear parts. Zodiac’s MX8 and G3 troubleshooting guidance identifies flow, hose setup, blockages and component condition as relevant checks.
- Check hose length and routing: Confirm the hose is assembled to the length required by the manual and can move freely.
- Look for kinks, leaks and air ingress: Inspect hose sections and connections; air leaks can interfere with operation.
- Clear blockages: Check the cleaner and hose for debris that could restrict suction.
- Check pump basket and filter condition: Buildup can reduce circulation and affect cleaner movement.
- Inspect model-specific parts: For the G3, Zodiac advises checking the diaphragm for damage; its MX8 guidance includes checking regulator movement. Use the exact model’s instructions to identify other wear parts.
- Recheck flow: Set flow as the manual directs. Too much or too little can affect movement, wall climbing and coverage.
Parts and accessories are model-specific
Zodiac lists genuine replacement parts and an MX8/MX8 Elite tune-up kit. It also lists an MX-series flow regulator and a Cyclonic Leaf Catcher. These are not universal additions: confirm compatibility with your exact cleaner and pool setup before purchasing. Use the manufacturer’s parts diagram and part number rather than assuming a generic replacement will fit.

Pentair’s general guidance captures the trade-off: “Different inground pool cleaners work best for different types of pools.” The practical choice is therefore a compatible cleaner whose coverage, debris handling, hose reach and maintenance needs suit your pool—not a model presented as objectively best for everyone.
