For a full-featured box with Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and a feature-rich remote, consider the Roku Ultra. Google TV Streamer suits Google Home households that want built-in Ethernet, casting, and smart-home controls. Apple TV 4K is a natural fit for Apple users seeking Apple integration and broad format support. Amazon households wanting a compact stick may prefer the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K, provided they do not need Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos. This is a US-oriented comparison; availability and prices vary by region.

How to choose a streaming device for your TV
Check the whole signal chain, not just the player
A device listing Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or Dolby Atmos does not make those formats available in every setup. The television or sound system, the specific title, and the streaming service also need to support the format. Roku and Apple both condition certain features on compatible equipment or content. Before buying, check the exact TV and audio-system model specifications and the titles or services you expect to use.
Choose connectivity around your home network
If you want a wired connection, Roku Ultra and Google TV Streamer list built-in Ethernet. Apple offers Gigabit Ethernet on its Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration, not the Wi-Fi model. Amazon says Ethernet on the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K requires an adapter. For wireless use, Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K, and the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K list Wi-Fi 6. A wired port can be useful where the router is nearby or wireless reception is unreliable, but it does not guarantee a faster internet plan or uninterrupted playback.
Factor in the setup cost
Google says an HDMI 2.1 cable is required for Google TV Streamer and is not included; Apple says an HDMI cable is sold separately for Apple TV 4K. Check what is in the box before ordering. The cited product pages establish a cable requirement, not a need to buy an expensive cable.

Which device fits each household?
Choose Roku Ultra for a feature-rich box and wired options
Roku Ultra (model 4850R) is the clearest fit if you want a box rather than a stick, built-in Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, USB, and Roku’s Voice Remote Pro. Roku lists 4K playback up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, and HLG. These capabilities still depend on compatible TV, content, and services. Roku markets the Ultra as 30% faster than any other Roku device; that is Roku’s own claim, not an independently verified comparison in the evidence available here.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide gives the Roku Ultra (2024) an overall score of 78 and lists an approximate price of $90. The score belongs to Consumer Reports’ tested 2024-labeled model and its 2026 guide; the approximate guide price is not a current retail quote. Consumer Reports says its overall score draws on all its tests, including picture quality, ease of use, and features.

Choose Google TV Streamer for Google services and smart-home controls
Google TV Streamer combines Google TV, casting, built-in Ethernet, and Google Home and Matter controls, with Thread support. Google lists Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and 32 GB of storage. It makes the most sense when those ecosystem features matter to your household; they do not by themselves guarantee better picture or sound than another player.

The Google Store’s checked US price was $149.99 on October 7, 2026. Retail prices can change, and the checked figure should not be treated as a current quote outside that date or region. Google’s processor-speed language is a manufacturer claim, not an independent performance comparison.

Choose Apple TV 4K for Apple ecosystem integration
Apple TV 4K is a logical choice if your household already uses Apple devices and services. Apple lists an A15 Bionic chip, Wi-Fi 6, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Atmos. Its configurations differ in useful ways: the Wi-Fi model has 64 GB of storage, while the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model has 128 GB and Gigabit Ethernet. Apple’s technical specifications establish supported formats and hardware, not that every app or title will use them. Tom’s Guide describes the device as premium-priced and its interface as clean; these are editorial judgments, and its accessible guide is labeled 2025 rather than a complete 2026 test.
Choose the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K for an Amazon-oriented setup
Amazon’s device specifications identify the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) as a 2026 product. Amazon lists 4K, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Wi-Fi 6, Vega OS, and 8 GB of storage. It is a compact option for households already using Amazon and Alexa, if its format limitations suit their equipment and viewing habits. TechRadar’s October 2026 reporting says the model lacks Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Do not confuse it with the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), a separate 2023 model. What Hi-Fi? reported Amazon’s claim that the 2026 stick offers nearly 20% faster playback than similarly priced competing sticks, while stating that it had not independently run that comparison. That claim is not a verified head-to-head result.

There is no universal winner across these four devices. Use your own setup to narrow the choice: first rule out devices that lack a format you require, then decide whether Ethernet or an ecosystem feature matters enough to shape the purchase. Check live regional pricing and availability before placing an order.

What the available test evidence does—and does not—show
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide supplies a dated independent score for Roku Ultra (2024), not a single independently tested ranking of all four devices. Its score of 78 and approximate $90 guide price apply to that entry and edition.
