The right single-monitor arm is determined by the display’s actual weight, VESA hole pattern and your desk—not by screen size alone. For most ordinary monitors, PCWorld’s 2026 roundup names the Ergotron LX Pro its best general-purpose choice. The classic Ergotron LX is the better fit when your display approaches 25 pounds, while the MSI MAG MT201 targets very large, heavy screens at a lower price. The HUANUO HNSS6 is a budget option for lighter 32-inch-class panels, and the Ergotron HX is a conditional choice for genuinely heavy ultrawides.

Quick comparison: five single-monitor arms

The figures below combine PCWorld’s 2026 hands-on roundup, Ergotron’s official LX product sheet dated June 19, 2023, and a September 9, 2026 secondary comparison for the HX. Prices are snapshots, not guarantees; retailer offers can change.

Check compatibility before you compare features

1. Weigh the monitor without its factory stand

Remove the original stand and use the panel’s actual weight. A spring or gas arm has to balance the load across its adjustment range. A display that is too heavy can exceed the mechanism’s rating; one that is too light may refuse to stay down or drift upward. Screen diagonal is only a rough clue: two 34-inch monitors can have very different weights.

The classic LX is the only model in this group with a clearly stated minimum and maximum from an official specification sheet: 3.2–11.4 kg (approximately 7–25 lb). LX Pro’s cited maximum is 22 lb, but no minimum load was stated in the same source. MSI lists a 44 lb maximum for the MT201, and HUANUO claims 20 lb for the HNSS6; those figures should not be treated as proof that every lighter panel will balance correctly.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Match the VESA hole pattern

Look at the four threaded holes on the back of the monitor and measure their horizontal and vertical spacing. The classic LX supports 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm patterns. The other candidates may use different plates or adapters, and the cited material does not establish every pattern for them. If your monitor has no VESA holes, you will need a compatible adapter; check the adapter’s load rating and clearance before ordering the arm.

3. Confirm the exact clamp or grommet hardware

A desk arm normally attaches with a rear-edge clamp, a grommet bolt through a cable hole, or both. Measure the desk thickness at the intended position and inspect the underside for drawers, crossbars, cable trays or reinforcing rails that could block the tightening plate. A curved, beveled or unusually shallow edge may not provide enough contact.

Do not assume every color, bundle or regional SKU contains identical hardware. Ergotron’s LX sheet notes that attachment packages vary: some versions include a standard clamp and grommet mount, while others use alternate clamps. Confirm the contents for the exact model number you are buying.

4. Compare movement with your working position

List the movements you actually need: height, forward reach, tilt, side-to-side swivel and portrait rotation. PCWorld reports 13 inches of lift, up to 85° of tilt and 360° swivel/rotation for LX Pro. Ergotron’s classic LX sheet specifies up to 33 cm of lift, up to 64 cm of extension and 360° pan and rotation. Those measurements describe the arm’s capability, not the distance your monitor will always achieve; desk depth, the monitor’s center of gravity and nearby walls can reduce usable range.

5. Account for installation and cable routing

Check whether you are comfortable securing a heavy panel while adjusting spring tension. LX Pro is described as mostly tool-free, although its included hex wrench can be needed for some adjustments. PCWorld found the MT201’s assembly more involved, with several screws and possible use of an Allen-head screwdriver. The HNSS6 uses a simple clamp, but its plastic cable covers have limited space. Count every cable you intend to route—power, video, USB and audio—before relying on an arm’s channels.

Which arm fits which buyer?

Ergotron LX Pro: the balanced default for typical monitors

PCWorld selected LX Pro as its best general-purpose single-monitor arm in its 2026 roundup. Its cited capacity is up to 22 lb for screens up to 34 inches, with 13 inches of lift, tilt up to 85° and full 360° swivel and rotation. Cable channels keep the run along the arm, and the broad clamp should suit many conventional desks.

This is the straightforward choice when your panel falls comfortably below 22 lb, uses a compatible VESA pattern and needs frequent repositioning. The mostly tool-free setup reduces assembly friction, but expect to use the supplied hex wrench if an adjustment does not move by hand. Because the source does not state a minimum supported weight, very light displays deserve a balance check before purchase.

Ergotron LX Desk Monitor Arm: for displays near the upper end of the range

The classic LX is the better match when your standless monitor weighs more than the LX Pro’s reported 22-pound ceiling but no more than 11.4 kg (about 25 lb). Ergotron’s official sheet gives a 3.2–11.4 kg load range, up to 33 cm of lift, up to 64 cm of extension, and 360° pan and rotation. It explicitly supports 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm VESA patterns.

The 7-pound minimum matters for small or unusually light panels: a tension arm adjusted for a heavier load may not hold such a monitor in place. Measure first rather than assuming that a low screen weight is automatically safer. The sheet lists a 10-year warranty and warns that its content can change; it is dated June 19, 2023, so verify the current specification and the exact attachment package.

MSI MAG MT201: a budget route to a large, heavy display

PCWorld’s roundup names the MT201 its budget pick. The cited product information claims support for screens up to 49 inches and 44 lb, with spring tension. That makes it the candidate to investigate when a large ultrawide or television-sized monitor is far beyond the LX Pro’s 22-pound figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is installation effort. PCWorld’s reviewer found the MT201 capable with 32-inch screens but described assembly as more involved, requiring multiple screws and potentially an Allen-head screwdriver. The cited material does not establish its lift, extension, VESA range, warranty or minimum load, so verify those points against the exact listing before buying—especially for a 49-inch panel whose VESA holes may sit far from its center of gravity.

PCWorld showed a $99.99 MSRP and offers around $60–$80 when accessed October 7, 2026. Treat both as time-sensitive price information rather than a standing street price.

HUANUO HNSS6: the low-cost choice for lighter 32-inch-class panels

PCWorld describes the HNSS6 as a single arm under $50. The product claim is support for a 32-inch display weighing up to 20 lb; PCWorld’s reviewer tested panels up to 32 inches and 12 lb and reported easy support with a simple clamp installation.

Keep those figures separate. A reviewer’s 12-pound test range is not a 20-pound certification, and a manufacturer’s maximum does not guarantee ideal balance for every shape of monitor. The review also reports finicky plastic cable covers with limited room and warns that gas springs can lose potency over time. Choose this arm when the lower price and simple clamp matter more than premium cable hardware or long-term adjustment feel, and leave headroom below the claimed maximum where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ergotron HX: a conditional heavy-monitor option

The HX belongs on a shortlist only when the display is genuinely heavy or unusually large. A September 9, 2026 comparison lists a 20–42 lb range and support up to 49 inches. Those figures come from a secondary source, not an official HX product page inspected for this guide, so verify the exact HX configuration, VESA plate, movement limits and included desk mount directly with Ergotron.

For an ordinary 24-, 27- or 32-inch monitor, starting with HX can add unnecessary cost and capacity. For a 38- to 49-inch ultrawide or a panel near 40 lb, it may be the appropriate class of arm—but only after the manufacturer confirms that your specific monitor and mount combination is supported.

A practical selection process

  1. Record the bare-panel weight. Remove the stand, cables and accessories that will not remain attached. Write the result in pounds or kilograms.
  2. Measure the VESA pattern. Confirm the hole spacing and thread type from the monitor manual or the rear panel.
  3. Measure the desk. Note thickness, edge shape, underside clearance and whether a grommet hole is available.
  4. Set a movement target. Decide whether you need portrait rotation, a long forward reach, frequent height changes or only occasional tilt.
  5. Filter the candidates. Eliminate any arm whose stated load range, VESA plate or attachment method does not fit. For HX and any unlisted specification, obtain manufacturer confirmation rather than guessing.
  6. Compare installation and support. Balance price against assembly effort, cable-channel space and warranty length.
  7. Recheck the current listing. Confirm stock, regional SKU, included clamp or grommet and current price immediately before ordering.

Installation checklist

  1. Clear the desk and protect the panel. Place the monitor face down on a soft, stable surface only after disconnecting power and signal cables.
  2. Attach the base. Fit the clamp or grommet exactly as shown for your SKU. Tighten against a solid section of the desktop; do not clamp over a fragile veneer edge or unsupported cable tray.
  3. Install the VESA plate. Use the supplied screws and the monitor manufacturer’s required length. Stop if a screw bottoms out before the plate is secure.
  4. Hang or connect the arm. Keep one hand supporting the monitor while engaging the arm interface. A large panel may require a second person.
  5. Set tension gradually. Move the monitor through its height range and make small spring or gas-tension adjustments until it stays where released. Do not force a joint that is at its stop.
  6. Set viewing position. Adjust height, distance, tilt and rotation with the panel centered over the desk’s supported area.
  7. Route cables last. Leave enough slack for the arm’s full travel. Fill cable channels without crushing connectors; the HNSS6’s covers may not accept a thick bundle.
  8. Recheck fasteners. After repositioning the monitor several times, inspect the clamp, grommet and VESA screws for movement.

Common problems and fixes

The monitor rises or will not stay down

The load may be below the arm’s effective minimum, or the tension is set too high. Remove accessories, confirm the bare-panel weight and reduce tension in small increments. The classic LX’s stated minimum is 3.2 kg; no minimum was established for LX Pro, MT201 or HNSS6 in the cited material.

The monitor slowly droops

Check that the display does not exceed the arm’s maximum and that the VESA plate is centered correctly. Increase tension gradually. If an HNSS6 has lost gas-spring potency over time, a tension adjustment may not restore its original feel; replacing the arm may be safer than operating beyond its stable range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The clamp twists or marks the desk

Loosen it, move to a structurally supported section and verify that the clamp fits the measured thickness. A grommet mount can be preferable when the rear edge is rounded or obstructed, provided your exact SKU includes one.

Cables pull tight during movement

Disconnect and reroute with a service loop near each joint. Keep cables inside channels only where they can move freely. Limited cable-cover capacity is a documented HNSS6 trade-off; do not force a thick bundle under its plastic covers.

The screen cannot rotate to portrait

Rotation depends on the arm joint, VESA plate orientation, monitor clearance and nearby walls. Confirm that the model’s stated rotation range applies to your configuration and leave space above and beside the panel before tightening the final position.

Verdict

Choose Ergotron LX Pro for a typical monitor under its 22-pound cited ceiling and broad everyday adjustability. Choose the classic LX when the panel is heavier but remains within its official 7–25-pound range, or when its documented 75×75 and 100×100 mm VESA support is decisive. Pick MSI MAG MT201 for a large, heavy screen if you accept more assembly and verify the missing specifications. Select HUANUO HNSS6 for a lighter 32-inch-class display on a tight budget, with realistic expectations about cable covers and gas-spring longevity. Reserve Ergotron HX for heavy ultrawides only after confirming the exact configuration with the manufacturer.
