To safely download a video editor for Windows or Mac, get it from the publisher’s official website or a trusted app store, verify the product and operating system before downloading, and keep your device’s security protections on. Avoid cracked copies, download portals, and unexpected installers. Then check the editor publisher’s current system requirements before installing.
Before downloading: check the editor and your computer
Choose an editor that fits your task, then check its current operating-system and hardware requirements on the publisher’s website. Requirements and versions can change, so rely on the live product page rather than an old download listing.
Open the app store directly or type the publisher’s known web address into your browser. Check the domain carefully: a search result, sponsored ad, or download portal is not proof that a page belongs to the software publisher.

Follow a safe download workflow
- Check compatibility. Find the editor’s current Windows or macOS requirements on the official publisher site.
- Open a trusted source. Use the publisher’s official website or the relevant app store; avoid third-party download portals when the publisher offers its own installer.
- Verify the download page. Confirm the editor’s name, publisher, operating system, and edition before selecting a file.
- Keep protections active. Leave operating-system and browser security features enabled. Pause to investigate warnings instead of approving them automatically or turning protections off.
- Reject unofficial copies. Do not use cracks, keygens, repackaged installers, or unexpected download managers.
- Update from a trusted route. After installation, use the editor’s built-in updater or return to the official vendor page rather than following an unfamiliar pop-up or third-party updater.
Downloading safely on Windows
Microsoft advises downloading apps only from trusted sources such as Microsoft Store and installing programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites (Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software; its instructions for online program installs). Keep Windows, your browser, and Microsoft Defender up to date. Windows 11 includes Smart App Control, and modern Windows versions include Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
If SmartScreen, Defender, or Windows shows a warning, stop and verify that you have the correct publisher and installer. Do not disable protection just to run an unfamiliar file. Microsoft notes that potentially unwanted apps can display unwanted ads, secretly use a PC for cryptocurrency mining, or offer other unexpected apps.

An antivirus scan during download is one layer of protection, not a guarantee that a file is harmless. Microsoft recommends trusted sources as well as security software; neither a scan nor a clean-looking download page replaces checking who published the installer.
Downloading safely on Mac
Prefer the Mac App Store or the editor publisher’s official website. For software downloaded outside the App Store, macOS checks Developer ID signatures for apps, plug-ins, and installer packages. This helps verify that software comes from an identified developer and has not been altered. On macOS Catalina and later, notarization is required by default: Apple checks for known malicious software, but notarization is not a guarantee that an app is risk-free (Apple’s explanation of safely opening apps).

If macOS blocks an installer, verify the publisher and download the file again from the official source. Do not bypass Gatekeeper for a file whose origin you cannot confirm.

Adobe apps
Use Adobe’s official download and account routes for Adobe apps. Adobe warns that unlicensed app installation files have a high chance of containing malware or viruses (Adobe Genuine Software). That warning concerns unlicensed files; it is not a quantified estimate for all unofficial downloads.

- The download came from a crack, keygen, repack, or file-sharing listing rather than the publisher or a trusted store.
- The page or installer offers an unexpected download manager or unrelated software.
- The product, publisher, operating system, or edition does not match what you intended to download.
- Your browser or operating system raises a security warning and you cannot independently verify the installer’s source.
When in doubt, cancel the download or installation, return to the publisher’s official site, and obtain the installer there. Do not treat disabling security features as a fix for an unverified file.
