To stop brand colours drifting between Figma and CSS, give each colour decision a named token, separate raw palette values from usage-based roles, and choose one controlled path for moving token changes into your code. Figma variables and the Design Tokens Community Group (DTCG) format can help, but a shared format does not guarantee that every tool handles aliases, themes, or synchronization the same way.
What design tokens solve
A design token gives a reusable name to a design decision, such as a brand colour or the role that colour serves. Instead of copying a hex value into multiple Figma objects and CSS rules, design and code can refer to the same named decision. The Design Tokens Community Group describes its format as a way to exchange tokens between tools; it is intended to improve portability, not to make every integration identical. The Design Tokens Community Group explains the group’s work.
Figma’s guidance recommends a structure with primitive variables for raw values and semantic variables that refer to those primitives. A primitive says which shade the value is; a semantic token says why the interface uses it. That distinction makes a rebrand easier: you can change the shade behind a role without renaming every use of that role.
Build a primitive-to-semantic colour system
1. Audit existing values
Find repeated hex or RGB values in Figma variables, styles, and CSS. Record the canonical brand colours, then distinguish accidental duplicates from intentional variants, such as a hover shade or a subtle surface tint. The audit method is a practical starting point; the token structure itself is the part Figma documents.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Name primitive colours
Store raw palette values in a clearly identified primitive collection. Names such as blue-100 and blue-200 identify shades without implying where they must be used. Figma’s token guidance uses this kind of simple naming for primitives. Figma’s design-token guidance describes the primitive-to-semantic approach.
3. Add semantic aliases
Create role-based names such as text-primary, surface-default, and action-primary, then point each one to a primitive. Prefer a role name such as text-secondary over an appearance name such as gray-text: the role can remain stable if the brand changes from gray to another colour.

For example, this illustrative DTCG-style JSON expresses a raw brand shade and a semantic alias:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches{
"color": {
"brand": {
"blue": {
"$type": "color",
"$value": "#155EEF"
}
},
"action": {
"primary": {
"$type": "color",
"$value": "{color.brand.blue}"
}
}
}
}
Here, color.brand.blue holds the raw shade and color.action.primary describes its purpose. This is an explanatory example, not a tested Figma-to-CSS integration; confirm that your chosen importer or exporter resolves the alias as intended.

4. Use collections and modes where they clarify context
Figma variables support collections, aliases, and modes. A collection can group related variables, while modes can represent contexts such as light and dark. Use modes when the same semantic role needs different values in different themes; keep the role name stable and change its referenced value by mode. Figma’s variables, collections, and modes overview describes these capabilities.
Choose a source of truth and an output path
Decide where an approved change is made first, and how it reaches the other environment. A team might edit Figma variables, maintain a DTCG-compatible JSON file in version control, or use a token-management integration. The right choice depends on how the team works; the important part is a documented, repeatable route from the canonical values to the CSS the product actually uses.

| Approach | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Figma variables as the editable source | Designers update variables in Figma, then a supported export or integration carries changes toward code. | Whether the integration exports aliases and modes, and how the CSS build receives updates. |
| DTCG JSON in version control | The team edits a shared token file and uses compatible tooling to import values into design tools and generate code outputs. | Which directions are supported, how references are resolved, and whether tool-specific extensions are required. |
| Token-management integration | A plugin or service mediates between design variables and code. | Current compatibility, supported token features, update direction, review process, and how to move the data elsewhere. |
The DTCG Design Tokens Format Module 2025.10, published on 28 October 2025, describes exchanging tokens between tools and identifies keeping design and development tools in sync as a use case. It is a stable Community Group specification, but it is not a W3C Standard and is not on the W3C Standards Track. Its existence does not mean a particular workflow is automatic, real-time, bidirectional, or conflict-free.
Validate the actual Figma and CSS behavior
Format compatibility is not feature parity. Figma’s live Help Center documentation describes importing DTCG JSON and lists constraints, including support for HSL and sRGB color imports. It also documents limitations involving dimensions, font-family values, and duration units. For dimensions, the documented unit is px; for durations, it is seconds. Check the current importer requirements against the file you plan to use rather than assuming that any valid-looking token file will map without changes. Figma’s modes documentation covers importing and its format limitations.

Before relying on an exchange or build workflow, check these behaviors with representative tokens:
- Do primitive values retain the intended colour and format?
- Do semantic aliases remain references, or are they flattened into values?
- Do light and dark modes map to the intended CSS outputs?
- Are unsupported types or units rejected, transformed, or silently altered?
- Can the build regenerate CSS from the canonical source without manual edits that will be overwritten?
- Does a change flow design-to-code, code-to-design, or in both directions—and how are conflicting edits handled?
The DTCG Design Tokens Color Module 2025.10, also published on 28 October 2025, specifies token colour values and opacity. Like the format module, it is a stable Community Group specification rather than a W3C Standard. Standards-level definitions can help tools agree on data structures, but each tool still determines which features it implements.
Make token changes reviewable
Treat changes to canonical tokens as changes to the product’s interface, not as isolated edits to a swatch. A practical team workflow is to review the token diff, identify affected semantic roles, regenerate or export the relevant outputs, and publish the design and code changes together. This is a workflow recommendation, not a DTCG requirement. It makes unintended changes easier to catch and reduces the chance that a revised Figma value ships without its corresponding CSS update.
On 17 June 2026, a DTCG community update named Figma, Penpot, Sketch, Tokens Studio, and Style Dictionary among tools supporting the specification. That dated ecosystem update indicates participation, not complete feature parity or a guarantee that every integration supports the same aliases, modes, or data flow. Check the current behavior of the specific versions and workflow your team uses. The DTCG community page carries the update.
