The best programming monitor is the one that gives you readable text and a useful workspace at a comfortable viewing distance, while fitting your desk and laptop. Start by comparing screen size with resolution and scaling, then check aspect ratio, panel and surface, stand adjustments, and connectivity. No single size or resolution is right for every developer.
1. Match resolution to screen size and scaling
Resolution tells you how many pixels a display has; screen size tells you how large those pixels appear. Consider both, along with your operating system’s scaling and the text size you prefer. A high pixel count does not automatically mean more usable space if you increase scaling to make text comfortable.
For a concrete manufacturer-listed example, BenQ’s RD280U is a 28.2-inch monitor with a 3840 × 2560 resolution and a stated density of 164 pixels per inch (PPI). These are specifications for that model, not a target every programmer needs. Check how your intended resolution and scaling render your editor, terminal, and other frequently used text.

2. Choose a workspace shape that fits your work
Pixel dimensions and aspect ratio shape how much content fits on screen and how windows sit beside one another. Think about whether you want more vertical code, a wider side-by-side editor and documentation layout, or space for multiple displays. Also account for the monitor’s physical width and height on your desk.
The RD280U is a 3:2 display at 3840 × 2560. That is one example of a taller workspace, not a universal recommendation. Your preferred window arrangement and the space available on your desk should guide the choice.

3. Check the panel type and surface
Look up the actual panel type and screen finish rather than relying on broad labels such as “programming monitor.” BenQ lists the RD280U as IPS with a Nano Matte coating. Its product page also lists flicker-free, low-blue-light, and reflection-related features or certifications.

4. Verify stand adjustments and mounting
Check height, tilt, swivel, and pivot individually: stands do not necessarily offer all four. Compare the adjustments with your desk and viewing position. If you may use a separate arm, confirm the monitor’s VESA pattern, weight, and the arm’s capacity before buying.
BenQ’s RD280U specifications list 110 mm of height adjustment, tilt, swivel, and VESA 100 × 100 mm mounting. The standard stand does not pivot. BenQ directs buyers who want that adjustment to the RD280UA arm version; check the exact model suffix and included hardware before purchase.

5. Match connectivity to your computer
For a laptop setup, check whether USB-C carries video and data as well as power, and whether its charging output is sufficient for your computer. Confirm the laptop supports display output through the port you plan to use; monitor features alone do not guarantee compatibility with every laptop or dock.
BenQ lists USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, data, and 90 W power delivery for the RD280U, along with a USB hub and KVM. These can simplify a compatible setup, but check your computer’s requirements and the monitor’s port details before relying on them.
Best Value
- [Nano Matte Panel] Low reflection for undisturbed clarity during long coding sessions.
- [Exclusive Coding Modes] Specially tuned for code readability and eye comfort.

Compare monitors against your actual setup
Use the same checklist for each model you consider:
- Screen and text: Compare physical size, resolution, stated PPI, and the scaling you expect to use.
- Workspace: Check aspect ratio and whether the dimensions suit your window layout and desk.
- Panel and finish: Verify the listed panel type and surface, and treat comfort-related feature claims as manufacturer descriptions.
- Positioning: Confirm the included stand’s height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments, plus VESA support if you plan to mount it.
- Connections: Confirm required video and data ports, charging power, and hub or KVM functions against your computer.
The RD280U is a useful specification example, not a tested winner or a universal pick. Published specifications do not establish comparative image quality, comfort, compatibility with every setup, or value for money. Price and availability can change, so check current listings separately.
