There is no single best PHP framework for every web developer. For a general-purpose full-stack application, Laravel is a practical starting point when its supported PHP versions and conventions fit your team. Symfony is a strong choice for projects that need modular components and a long support runway. CodeIgniter and Yii can also make sense, especially when your team already uses them—but check their current requirements and lifecycle status before committing.
Start with the PHP version your host can actually run, then compare support dates, architecture, built-in workflow and team familiarity.
Which PHP framework should you use in 2026?
Choose according to the constraints of the application, not an assumed universal ranking. A framework’s PHP minimum can rule it out before its features matter; its release and support schedule can also affect how often your team must plan upgrades.

| Framework | Consider it when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Laravel 13 | You want an integrated, convention-led workflow for a general-purpose web app. | Laravel 13 supports PHP 8.3–8.5. Verify that the packages and integrations you need support your chosen versions, and account for annual major releases. |
| Symfony 8.1 or 7.4 LTS | You value explicit modular structure, reusable components or a defined long-term support option. | Symfony 8.1 requires PHP 8.4 or newer. Symfony 7.4 LTS requires PHP 8.2 or newer and has a longer published security-support horizon. |
| CodeIgniter 4.7.4 | You want a relatively lean framework or already work in the CodeIgniter ecosystem. | The surfaced official requirements for the 4.7.4 documentation say PHP 8.2 or newer; confirm the requirement for the exact release you intend to deploy. |
| Yii 3 | You are evaluating Yii for new development or your team already knows its ecosystem. | Keep Yii 3 separate from maintenance decisions for Yii 2 and Yii 1.1, which have different lifecycle dates. |
| Slim | You want a deliberately minimal application and prefer to select components yourself. | A secondary comparison describes Slim as not bundling an ORM, template engine or authentication system. Validate the packages and integration work your app will need. |
The Laravel and Symfony descriptions reflect their documented releases and the cited comparison of framework architecture; the fit guidance is a project-selection recommendation, not a guarantee of performance or quality. Check PHP compatibility before comparing features
Find the PHP version available in the deployment environment—not just on a local development machine. If the host cannot run the framework’s required PHP version, you will need a different framework version, a different runtime, or another framework.
- Laravel 13: PHP 8.3–8.5, according to Laravel’s current release notes.
- Symfony 8.1: PHP 8.4 or newer.
- Symfony 7.4 LTS: PHP 8.2 or newer.
- CodeIgniter 4.7.4 documentation: PHP 8.2 or newer in the surfaced official requirements page.
- Yii 3: PHP 8.2 or newer, according to Yii’s lifecycle page.
These are version-specific requirements, not promises that every older release of each framework supports the same PHP range. Check the official documentation for the precise framework release and deployment setup you plan to use.

Laravel vs Symfony: which should you learn?
For a general-purpose full-stack application, Laravel is a practical first choice if you want an integrated workflow and its conventions suit the team. Laravel 12’s release notes describe starter kits for React, Svelte, Vue and Livewire, with WorkOS AuthKit listed as an optional authentication variant. Laravel 13’s release notes list support for PHP 8.3–8.5. Laravel release notes.

Consider Symfony when explicit structure, independently usable components or a longer support runway are more important than adopting a single integrated workflow. Its 7.4 LTS line is especially relevant when production systems cannot yet move to PHP 8.4: Symfony 7.4 supports PHP 8.2 and above, whereas Symfony 8.1 requires PHP 8.4. Symfony lists security fixes for 7.4 through November 2029. Symfony releases.
Architecture changes what your team assembles
A 2026 secondary comparison describes Laravel as using Eloquent Active Record and Symfony as using Doctrine Data Mapper. These are different approaches to how application code works with data; they are not a simple quality ranking. Consider the patterns your developers already know and how they fit your application’s data model. PHP framework comparison.
How long will each framework version be supported?
Published support dates help teams plan upgrades, but they apply to specific release lines. Confirm the official release page when setting a production upgrade policy.
Rank #4
| Release line | PHP requirement | Published support information |
|---|---|---|
| Laravel 13 | PHP 8.3–8.5 | Bug fixes through Q3 2027; security fixes through Q1 2028. |
| Symfony 8.1 | PHP 8.4 or newer | Supported through January 2027. |
| Symfony 7.4 LTS | PHP 8.2 or newer | Bug fixes through November 2028; security fixes through November 2029. |
| Yii 2.0.50 and later | PHP requirement varies by release | Security support through November 23, 2026. |
| Yii 1.1 | PHP requirement varies by release | End of life on December 31, 2026. |
Laravel says major framework releases arrive annually, around Q1, while minor and patch releases may arrive weekly. Symfony uses a time-based schedule: minor releases every six months, in May and November, and major releases every two years. Laravel release notes, Symfony releases.

It can be, particularly for a team that already uses CodeIgniter or wants a relatively lean framework. Do not assume that a lean framework means an old PHP runtime will work: the official requirements page surfaced for CodeIgniter 4.7.4 says PHP 8.2 or newer. Check the requirements for the exact release you will install and compare them with your host’s PHP version. CodeIgniter server requirements.
When does Yii make sense?
Yii’s current and older lines need separate decisions. Yii 3 was released on December 31, 2025 and requires PHP 8.2 or newer. For an existing application, the Yii lifecycle page lists security support for Yii 2.0.50 and later through November 23, 2026, and Yii 1.1 reaches end of life on December 31, 2026. Those dates make lifecycle planning important for teams maintaining older Yii code; they do not make Yii 3 and older lines interchangeable. Yii release cycle.
A practical framework-selection checklist
- Confirm the deployment runtime. Check the PHP version your hosting environment can provide, then rule out incompatible release lines.
- Set your support horizon. Compare published bug-fix and security-fix dates with the lifespan and upgrade capacity of the application.
- Choose the architecture you can maintain. Decide whether an integrated convention-led framework, explicit modular components or a minimal package-first approach best fits the team.
- Verify the actual integrations. Check framework and package compatibility for authentication, database access, front-end workflow and other required services.
- Account for team experience. A familiar framework can reduce ramp-up, but confirm that its release line and runtime remain suitable for the new project.
There is no reliable comparable performance benchmark or independently auditable adoption statistic established here, so neither should be used as a shortcut for choosing. Evaluate the project requirements, deployment constraints and support policy instead.
