Before buying a laptop for a middle-school student, check the school or district’s device policy, required software, and whether it provides a device. Some schools supply laptops or restrict personal devices on campus. Once you know what the student is allowed and expected to use, choose a Chromebook or Windows laptop that supports those requirements.
Check the school’s policy before shopping
Ask the school or district whether it supplies a device, allows personal laptops, and requires particular software or services. Policies are local, not universal: for the 2026–27 school year, Cherokee County School District says assigned Chromebooks are provided to middle-school students for use during the school day and personal laptops are not permitted on campus. Check the district’s current guidance rather than assuming a personal laptop will be usable at school.
Also confirm whether a device is needed at home, whether the student must bring it between home and school, and whether the school has a required screen size, operating system, or configuration. These answers determine whether a purchase is necessary and which specifications matter.
Choose the operating system around schoolwork
When a Chromebook makes sense
Consider a Chromebook if the school’s work and required applications run in a browser or use ChromeOS and Google’s school environment. When to consider Windows
A Windows laptop may be a better fit if the school requires Windows desktop applications or broader compatibility with specific software. Microsoft describes Windows devices for education; check the school’s requirements and the specific device’s Windows version and eligibility before choosing.
Are Chromebooks or Windows laptops better for middle school students?
Neither is best for every student. The right choice depends on the school’s required software, how the laptop will be used, and whether the school provides or restricts devices. Ask the school which platform and applications it supports before prioritizing brand or specifications.

Use specifications as a starting point, not a universal rule
For 2026–27, Cherokee County School District’s guidance recommends 8 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage for ChromeOS, or 16 GB of memory and a 128 GB SSD for Windows 11. Those figures are that district’s recommendations, not minimum requirements for every school or student. Follow the specifications from the student’s own school if it provides them.
The same district guidance sets a 10-hour battery target. Treat that as a district recommendation rather than a guarantee of real-world battery life: actual runtime varies with the device and how it is used.

Prioritize the features a student will use every day
For a middle-school laptop, practical features often matter more than premium performance. Check whether it is comfortable to carry and use for schoolwork, and whether the keyboard, camera, and microphone suit the student’s assignments and video calls.
- Battery: Look for enough runtime for the student’s schedule, using the school’s guidance if available.
- Durability: Consider sturdy hinges, spill resistance, and a protective case, especially if the laptop will travel in a backpack.
- Portability and screen size: Match the size and weight to how the student will carry and use the device; follow any school limits.
- Camera, microphone, and keyboard: Check these in the exact configuration, particularly if classwork includes video calls, typing, or presentations.
- Ports: Confirm that the laptop can connect to any accessories or storage devices the student needs.
Check update support for the exact Chromebook
Google says Chromebook models released from 2021 onward receive ten years of automatic security and feature updates, but the support policy should be checked for the particular model. Google’s Auto Update policy explains how to check a device’s update information. Do not rely on the Chromebook family name alone: verify the exact model before buying, especially if it is an older or used device.

What to make of the Dell Chromebook 11 example
Google’s education Chromebook finder lists a Dell Chromebook 11 configuration with an Intel N-Series processor, 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and a display under 12 inches. Cherokee County also identifies a Dell 11 Chromebook as a current model similar to its school-assigned device for home use. These references make it a model to investigate, not a tested recommendation or a universal best choice. Confirm the precise generation and configuration, warranty, and current availability before purchase.
If the student will carry a laptop between home and school, a protective carrying case is a sensible optional accessory. Check the fit for the exact laptop rather than assuming cases are interchangeable.

Use this buying checklist
- Ask the school whether it provides a device, permits personal laptops, and has a required operating system or specification.
- List the software and online services the student must use, then confirm compatibility with the school or software provider.
- Choose ChromeOS or Windows based on those requirements rather than on a general claim that one platform is better.
- Compare the exact configuration’s memory, storage, battery, weight, keyboard, camera, microphone, and ports with the student’s needs.
- For a Chromebook, check the automatic update policy for the exact model; for Windows, confirm the supported version and Windows 11 eligibility if relevant.
- Verify the model generation, warranty, and current availability, and add a fitted protective case if the laptop will travel.
