To choose which keyboard layout Windows 11 should use by default, install that layout first, then open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings and select it in the default input-method control if your Windows build provides one. If you only need to change layouts for the moment, use the taskbar input-language icon or press Windows key + Spacebar.
Install the keyboard layout you want to use
Windows can only select a layout that is installed. A keyboard layout controls which characters are produced by your keys; it is separate from the language used for Windows menus and other interface text. Microsoft notes that “Changing the keyboard layout only changes the layout and doesn’t change the Windows display language.”
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Check the language list. If the relevant language is not installed, select Add a language and follow the prompts. Downloading a language pack requires an internet connection.
- Beside the relevant language, select the three-dot menu, then choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, check whether the layout you need is listed. If it is not, select Add a keyboard and choose the layout.
If the layout is not offered, check the language that corresponds to that layout. Layouts are not always listed under a language pack with the same name, and adding a keyboard layout does not always require installing a matching full language pack.

- Open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings.
- Find the control for the default input method and choose the installed keyboard layout or input method you prefer.
The precise control label and whether it is available can vary by Windows build. Microsoft’s guidance identifies the Advanced keyboard settings page but does not document identical selection instructions for every version. If you do not see a default-selection control, use the available settings on your build rather than assuming that changing Preferred languages order will set the keyboard default.

Switch the active layout temporarily
To change the layout for the current session or task, select the input-language icon on the taskbar and choose an installed layout. You can also press Windows key + Spacebar to cycle through installed layouts. These actions switch the active layout; they are not the same as choosing a persistent default.
If Windows key + Spacebar does nothing, only one keyboard layout may be installed. Add another layout using the steps above, then try the shortcut again.

Fix common default-language problems
The layout you want is missing
Open the language’s Language options and look under Keyboards. If the layout is absent, check the language that matches it and add that language if needed. You may be able to add the layout without downloading a full language pack.

Microsoft documents taskbar system-icon and legacy language-bar settings that can affect whether the input indicator appears. If it is hidden, use those settings to check its visibility; you can also use Windows key + Spacebar to switch layouts when more than one is installed.

The keyboard changes after changing Windows display language
A display-language change can also affect the selected keyboard layout. At the sign-in screen, check the input-language icon before entering your password, since the active layout determines the character mapping used in the password field.
Reordering Preferred languages does not change the keyboard default
Preferred languages order controls the first supported language used by Microsoft Store apps and websites. It is not a guaranteed way to set the persistent keyboard input method. Use Advanced keyboard settings for the default input method when that control is available.
