You can move files between cloud services without downloading them first only when the providers or a transfer tool support your exact source-and-destination combination. Otherwise, stage the files locally, then upload them. In either case, check how the transfer handles folders, permissions, versions, timestamps, and native documents; run a representative pilot; and keep the original files until the destination has been verified.
Choose a transfer method that supports both services
There is no universal cloud-to-cloud method. A service may support some storage systems, account types, or file features but not others. Confirm that the specific source and destination are supported before granting access or scheduling a transfer.
| Method | Best suited to | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Provider-managed transfer service | A supported provider pair, particularly when the collection is large and managed retries and reports are useful. | Supported endpoints, required permissions, metadata behavior, reports, scale guidance, and performance commitments. For example, Google says its Storage Transfer Service is optimized for transfers involving more than 1 TiB, validates data integrity, and retries transfers; it provides no SLA for performance or latency. These claims apply to that service, not to cloud transfers in general. Google Cloud Storage Transfer Service overview. |
| Cloud-to-cloud transfer tool | A supported provider pair where avoiding a full local download matters. | Which account types and file features are supported; what access the tool receives; its security terms; and how it handles sharing, versions, metadata, errors, and reporting. |
| Download, then upload with provider clients | A smaller or straightforward collection, or a migration with no workable direct-transfer option. | Local disk space and bandwidth, interruption recovery, duplicate handling, sync behavior, and protection and cleanup of local copies. Staging on an external drive is optional, not a universal requirement. |
| Organization migration service or specialist | A team migration involving complex ownership, access controls, or compliance requirements. | Administrator rights, audit and error reports, data location, service terms, current provider support, and a tested pilot. Verify current product status rather than relying on an old product page. |
Compare options on the details that determine whether the result will be usable: provider-pair support, data volume and file types, native-document compatibility, permission and ownership mapping, version and metadata preservation, local staging, integrity checks and retries, error reporting, account-access scope, performance commitments, and destination capacity and retention.

Google Cloud Storage Transfer Service is one example of a provider-managed service with explicitly documented paths. Google lists transfers involving Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Cloud Storage, on-premises systems, publicly accessible URLs into Cloud Storage, and HDFS into Cloud Storage. That list describes the service’s supported paths; it does not establish that every consumer cloud drive can transfer directly to every other drive. Check the source-and-destination combination in Google’s service documentation.

Google describes HTTPS communication using TLS 1.3, data-integrity validation, automatic retries, and managed or self-hosted transfer options. It also states that the service has no SLA for transfer performance or latency, and that performance fluctuations may occur. These are Google’s statements about its own service, not general guarantees for migration tools.
Decide what must survive the move
A file’s bytes are only one part of a cloud migration. Before choosing a method, make a short list of what must remain intact:

Preservation varies by source, destination, and transfer path. Google’s metadata documentation specifies which properties its Storage Transfer Service preserves for particular paths, lists exceptions, and says undocumented metadata is not preserved. For example, certain paths do not preserve source timestamps; some Azure access-control and index-tag metadata are exceptions; and Cloud Storage fields such as updated, etag, and componentCount are not preserved in specified cases. Check the exact Google Cloud metadata-preservation guidance for the path in question rather than assuming that a successful copy includes all metadata.

Give native documents extra scrutiny
Google says users can migrate Drive files to Box, Dropbox, or Egnyte and continue editing migrated Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. It also warns that unsupported content within files may not migrate and could be unrecoverable from the migrated version if the original is deleted. Its documented limitations include some Google Forms and Sites content, some mobile editing, linked content, Sheets connectors and macros, protected ranges, certain Drive content, APIs, and Apps Script. Google also says Drive access controls, data-location commitments, DLP, Vault retention, and Drive API access are unavailable for Google documents stored with those providers. These are Google-specific limitations, not a claim about other provider pairs. Review Google’s feature and control guidance and test important documents before removing originals.

Plan and run the migration
- Inventory the source. Note the top-level folders, approximate size and file count, file types, shared folders, owners, important links, and native documents. Flag unusually large, restricted, frequently edited, or retention-sensitive files. For work or school accounts, ask the administrator whether the provider and migration tool are permitted; Google notes that administrators control whether third-party storage providers can be used.
- Confirm the destination and path. Check that the destination has sufficient capacity and that the chosen method supports the exact source, destination, account type, and relevant folders. A general claim of “cloud migration” does not prove support for a personal account, shared drive, team folder, native file, or permission type.
- Run a representative pilot. Transfer a small sample that includes ordinary files and the cases most likely to expose compatibility problems: shared content, large files, native documents, unusual names, and files with important metadata. Open the results, check the folder structure and access, and review any skipped or failed items.
- Schedule the full transfer and manage source changes. If users keep editing files during the transfer, the copy can miss changes or encounter errors. Google says Storage Transfer Service does not lock source files: for non-Google cloud sources to Google Cloud, an object changed during transfer fails and is not transferred; other documented paths may retry and eventually log an error. Where practical, limit writes during the final pass, rerun failed items, and inspect the reports. See Google’s known limitations.
- Verify before switching over. Compare expected and transferred counts where available; inspect logs and skipped-file reports; open representative files and high-value folders; test important links and permissions; and confirm destination ownership, storage, and retention settings. Update workflows and links after those checks pass.
- Retain the source through the rollback window. Keep the old copy available until intended users confirm that the destination works and any required rollback period has elapsed. Delete it only when the transfer and access checks are complete and applicable retention rules allow deletion.
Account for service-specific limits and status
Google Cloud documents a 5 TiB maximum single-object size for Cloud Storage; objects larger than that fail to transfer to Cloud Storage. This is a Cloud Storage service limit, not an industry-wide migration limit. Check the current known-limitations page for the path you plan to use.
Product status can also affect a migration plan. Google’s Workspace Migrate help page says its product for SharePoint Online and OneDrive is no longer receiving updates or bug fixes. It also says that, starting October 2026, Google Workspace Migrate for Exchange Online will no longer be available and points administrators to an advanced data import tool. Because the stated Exchange Online change is date-specific, administrators planning around it should verify the current Google Workspace Migrate help page before proceeding.
