The right budget laptop for college depends less on its name than on its exact configuration and whether it runs your required coursework software. These five candidates cover macOS, Windows, and ChromeOS, but they are not the result of one controlled five-laptop test. Prices and configurations vary, so confirm the current listing and the software requirements for your program before buying.
How to choose a college laptop on a budget
Start with your campus and course requirements, then compare the exact laptop configuration you can buy. A model family may be sold with different processors, memory, storage, displays, and operating systems; a recommendation for one configuration does not automatically apply to another.
- Check software and exam compatibility. Confirm that required applications, online exams, printers, and other campus peripherals support Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS as applicable. Ask your department or campus IT if the requirements are unclear.
- Match hardware to your workload. Browser research, documents, and video calls differ from workloads such as video editing, 3D rendering, or specialized engineering software. Verify the application’s operating-system and hardware requirements before choosing an entry-level configuration.
- Compare the delivered configuration. Check processor, memory, storage, display, keyboard, ports, and weight on the retailer’s exact SKU page. Do not assume that every laptop with the same family name has the same parts.
- Evaluate battery claims carefully. Manufacturer estimates and independent results may use different test conditions. A runtime figure is useful only with its source and test method; the figures below are not a like-for-like battery comparison.
The available sources do not establish one current price date, identical configurations, or a common test protocol across all five candidates. Treat these as use-case options, not a tested ranking. No current retailer price or stock status is established here; check those details before purchase.
Five budget laptop candidates for college
1. Apple MacBook Neo (2026): a compact macOS option
Consider the MacBook Neo if your required applications and campus services work on macOS and you want a 13-inch laptop. Apple’s 2026 specifications list an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, and either 256GB or 512GB of SSD storage, with a 2408-by-1506 display. Apple also claims up to 11 hours of wireless-web battery life, based on a test using pre-production systems browsing 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi; actual battery life varies by use and configuration. These are Apple specifications and test claims, not independent results. See Apple’s MacBook Neo technical specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- SLIM. LIGHTWEIGHT. READY TO GO: The all-new slim design is perfect for busy lives on the go.
- SKILLFULLY DESIGNED. MILITARY TOUGH: Built with premium craftsmanship to withstand the occasional drop or ding.
- ALL-DAY, ALL-IN-ONE CHARGING: Power through your school day – and beyond – with a long-lasting 12-hour battery.¹
- 3X FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS GENERATION OF WIFI: Crush your schoolwork in record time with Wi-Fi that’s three times faster than the previous generation of Wi-Fi.
- YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.
The fixed 8GB memory configuration is an important constraint to weigh against your course software and expected workload. Check storage needs too, especially if you expect to keep large media or project files locally.
2. HP OmniBook 3 14: a Windows option with 16GB variants
Under-$700 coverage identifies 16GB variants of the HP OmniBook 3 14 as Windows candidates. That description is not a guarantee that every version is under the ceiling: confirm the exact SKU, its price, and its memory before comparing it with other options. HP’s series specifications list a starting weight of 1.4 kg and note that weight varies with configuration and components; display choices also depend on configuration. Consult HP’s OmniBook 3 14 series specifications and match them to the listing you intend to buy.

Because this is a series rather than one uniform specification, verify the processor, screen, storage, and included ports as well as memory. A 16GB listing alone does not establish that the rest of the configuration suits your work.
3. Dell XPS 13 (2026): consider only if a configuration fits your ceiling
Dell describes its 2026 XPS 13 as weighing 1 kg and offering up to 17 hours of streaming battery life. Those are manufacturer statements in a company article, not independent measurements, and the source does not establish a current sale price. Check whether the available configuration actually meets your budget and course requirements before treating it as a budget choice. Dell’s announcement is at The New XPS 13: A Commitment Delivered.

Its stated weight may interest students who carry a laptop frequently, but it should not outweigh compatibility, configuration, and price in your decision. The 17-hour figure should not be compared directly with another model’s estimate unless their test protocols match.
4. Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1: for browser-centered coursework
Student-laptop coverage presents the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 as a value Chromebook option. ChromeOS can fit coursework conducted mainly in supported browser tools, but that does not establish that every college application, exam platform, printer, or peripheral will work. Confirm requirements with your course or campus IT before choosing ChromeOS, and verify the exact model’s processor, memory, storage, display, and ports in its current listing.

5. Acer Aspire Go 15: a budget candidate to verify by SKU
The Acer Aspire Go 15 appears in student and value coverage as a budget candidate, but the available information here does not establish an official, SKU-level specification. Before considering a listing, verify its processor, RAM, storage, screen, operating system, and current price; configurations sharing the Aspire Go 15 name may not be interchangeable for your needs. Choose only after matching that exact hardware to your coursework.
What the available battery and weight figures establish
The cited numbers describe different kinds of evidence, not a common comparison. Apple reports an up-to-11-hour wireless-web test with specific browsing conditions; Dell states up to 17 hours of streaming battery life without an independent test result in the cited company article; HP gives a configuration-dependent starting weight, while Dell states a weight of 1 kg. The sources do not establish a consistently measured five-model battery comparison, so these figures cannot tell you which laptop lasts longest in comparable student use.
