Choose Until Dawn for a cinematic slasher about a group of characters, The Quarry for a teen-horror camp story with documented voting modes, or Telltale’s The Walking Dead for episodic character drama whose decisions can carry between seasons. The right pick depends less on an objective “best game” than on the horror setting you want, how you want choices presented, whether other people will participate, and which platform and edition you own.
The three games in one comparison
These titles all make player decisions part of the horror experience, but they organize that idea differently. Until Dawn is presented by PlayStation as a branching narrative horror game centered on a group whose fates are shaped by choices. Its tone and structure fit a cinematic slasher story.

The Quarry, from 2K, uses a teen-horror summer-camp setup. Nine camp counselors face a story in which choices shape what happens, and its documented local and online modes can let friends vote on decisions. That makes it the clearest option here when the decision-making itself is meant to be social.
Telltale’s The Walking Dead is different in format and emphasis. It is an episodic, character-led series, and decisions from earlier seasons can affect later ones when the save or backstory setup is compatible. The practical question is not simply whether choices carry over, but which release you own and how that edition handles saves.

Until Dawn: the cinematic slasher choice
What the game is
PlayStation describes Until Dawn as a branching narrative horror game focused on a group of characters whose outcomes respond to player decisions. The original release was a PlayStation 4 game. A rebuilt and enhanced version launched for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, 2024.
The rebuilt release is not merely a platform label. PlayStation lists new collectibles, additional environments, and recut narrative sequences for the PS5 version. If you are comparing editions, identify whether a listing is the original PS4 game or the rebuilt PS5/PC release before assuming that features, presentation, or system requirements are identical.
How decisions are framed
The game’s central appeal is the feeling that a choice made during a cinematic horror scene can change what follows for the ensemble. PlayStation’s original store description emphasizes choice, consequence, and branching storylines. That framing makes it a natural match for players who want to steer a slasher narrative rather than simply watch one.
Do not infer a particular number of branches, survivors, deaths, or endings from the phrase “branching.” Those figures are not established by the official descriptions used for this comparison.

Plus, enjoy a brand-new musical score and reauthored audio that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the journey.
Playing with other people
PlayStation Canada labels the game single-player while also describing it as something people can enjoy together as a cinematic group experience in which they make decisions collectively. In practical terms, that means a roomful of players can discuss and agree on actions, but the product is not being described as a standard multiplayer campaign in which everyone controls a separate character.
Platform checks
- For the rebuilt release, check that the store listing is for PS5 or PC and that your computer meets the current requirements shown by the seller.
- For the original version, confirm that you are buying the PS4 edition rather than assuming the rebuilt release is included.
- If you want to pass a controller around a group, treat that as a shared-session arrangement, not as a guaranteed online or local multiplayer feature.
The Quarry: teen horror with documented voting modes
Setting and cast
2K describes The Quarry as a cinematic teen-horror story about nine camp counselors. The summer-camp setting gives it a different identity from Until Dawn even though both use an ensemble and choice-shaped consequences. The official launch announcement lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam, with a launch date of June 10, 2022.

2K’s support documentation describes local and online game modes, including a mode that allows up to seven friends to vote on decisions. Voting is the important distinction: the documentation does not say that every participant controls a character in the same way throughout a shared campaign.
Before buying for a group, verify the mode and platform combination for your edition. A feature documented for one release or platform should not automatically be treated as proof that every version supports identical multiplayer behavior.
When it suits a group
The Quarry is the strongest fit of these three when the social ritual is part of the plan: several people debate an action, select a vote, and then watch the result. It can also be played as a solo cinematic horror game; the group modes are an option rather than a requirement.

Buying and compatibility checklist
- Confirm whether your group is using PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC through Steam.
- Check the current support page or in-game mode list for the edition you intend to use.
- Distinguish voting from full character-control co-op when describing the session to friends.
- For online play, check each participant’s platform, account, and network requirements at purchase time because service policies can change.
Telltale’s The Walking Dead: episodic choices and continuity
Why its structure is different
Telltale’s The Walking Dead is an episodic series rather than one self-contained cinematic horror release. Its emphasis is character-led drama in a dangerous setting, with decisions that can be remembered by later episodes and seasons. That format makes continuity a buying and setup issue as much as a story feature.

Skybound states that decisions from earlier Telltale seasons can affect The Final Season. Depending on the release and the saves available to you, there are two documented ways to establish that history:
- Import an eligible local save. A compatible save from an earlier season can provide the decisions needed for the later story.
- Use the in-game Story Builder. This lets you select key prior decisions and create a backstory when a usable save is unavailable.
The older online save-upload system is no longer active according to Skybound’s support guidance. A player who expects a cloud account to restore a previous history should therefore check the current edition’s local-save and Story Builder options instead.
The Definitive Series limitation
Edition names matter. Skybound specifically says that saves from prior standalone releases cannot be imported into The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series. Saves created inside the Definitive Series can pass between its seasons within that collection.
That means “save transfer works” is too broad a statement. It can work between seasons contained in the Definitive Series, while an old standalone save may not be accepted by that collection. Conversely, a player with a standalone release should look for the Story Builder supplied by the relevant season rather than assuming the collection will recognize the old file.

- A Unique Gameplay Blend - Combines meticulous exploration, intriguing puzzle solving, infiltration and stealth with innovative shooting dynamics.
- A Versatile Unique Weapon - Use four different emotions: anger, fear, sadness and desire to interact with the environment (destroy obstacles, trigger mechanisms, overload circuits, illuminate your way) or to confuse, lure or damage your opponents.
- Masks! - Everybody in the unholy world hides behind a mask and it can be the difference between life or death. Build your own mask to get new skills and improve your abilities or wear other masks to infiltrate, confuse your enemies and impersonate your opponents.
- Languages - English voice. Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Spanish in-game text.
Practical continuity steps
- Write down the exact edition you own: standalone season, a later season with a Story Builder, or the Definitive Series.
- Keep the earlier season’s local save on the same system when the edition’s support documentation identifies it as eligible.
- If the save is missing or incompatible, start the later season’s Story Builder and recreate the major decisions it asks about.
- Do not rely on the discontinued online upload service as a recovery method.
- Within the Definitive Series, keep saves in the collection when moving from one included season to the next.

Which game should you choose?
Choose Until Dawn if you want a slasher ensemble
Pick it when the priority is a cinematic horror story about a group, with your decisions directing the danger from scene to scene. It is also the cleanest choice if you want friends beside you discussing decisions without needing an officially documented voting mode. Check whether you want the rebuilt PS5/PC release or the original PS4 game.
Choose The Quarry if the group is part of the game night
Pick it when a camp-counselor setting appeals to you and you want a documented way for friends to participate in decisions. Its voting modes make it the most explicitly social option here, but confirm the exact platform and edition before promising that a particular group setup will work.
Choose Telltale’s The Walking Dead if continuity matters most
Pick it when you want episodic character drama and care about carrying important prior decisions into later seasons. Decide first whether you are using standalone releases or the Definitive Series, then plan around local-save eligibility and the Story Builder rather than assuming every version accepts every old save.
Common purchase and setup mistakes
Mistaking a cinematic group session for multiplayer
Both cinematic games can be social, but watching and voting together is not the same as each player controlling a character. Until Dawn is described as single-player, while The Quarry has documented voting modes. Use the specific mode name when organizing a session.

Until Dawn has an original PS4 release and a rebuilt PS5/PC release. The Quarry launched across two PlayStation generations, two Xbox generations, and Steam. Store pages can show similarly named products, so verify the platform before checkout.
Buying the Definitive Series expecting an old save to import
That expectation conflicts with Skybound’s stated limitation. The collection can continue saves created inside itself, but prior standalone saves are not supported for import. Use the appropriate Story Builder when necessary.
Treating an official premise as a measurable ranking
Descriptions such as “branching,” “cinematic,” or “choices shape the story” explain structure, not a guaranteed quantity of outcomes or a universal scare rating. If those factors decide your purchase, look for edition-specific information rather than assuming the labels provide a numerical comparison.
