India’s semiconductor ambitions depend on more than building a fab: the chips it makes must match real customer demand, and the operation must deliver reliably and competitively. Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran put the strategic case plainly: “Semiconductors are fundamental for the future and we need strong capability.” But the project details announced in 2024 describe plans, not proof of current production or commercial success.
Why are chips critical to India’s future?
Semiconductors are essential components in products and systems across the economy. Chandrasekaran’s reported remarks connect their importance to the need for India to build strong capability, rather than rely only on the strategic importance of chips as an abstract goal. In March 2025, ETInfra described semiconductors as significant to electronics, healthcare, defence and aerospace. Those sectors illustrate the breadth of potential uses; they do not, by themselves, establish how much demand a particular Indian fab can serve.
Building domestic manufacturing capability could give India a stronger position in industries that use chips. Yet a fab is a capital-intensive industrial operation, and strategic relevance is not the same as commercial viability. The important questions are whether a facility can make the right products, attract customers, meet their specifications and operate reliably at a competitive cost.
What did N. Chandrasekaran say about India’s semiconductor push?
The Economic Times reported in September 2024 that Chandrasekaran, Tata Sons chairman, said: “Semiconductors are fundamental for the future and we need strong capability.” The statement was reported in coverage of the Tata Group and PSMC semiconductor partnership.

His wider comments also linked manufacturing growth with employment. Business Standard reported in October 2024 that he projected 500,000 Tata manufacturing jobs over five years across semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and other manufacturing. This was a forward-looking target spanning several areas, not a count of jobs already created and not a semiconductor-only figure.
What is India doing to build semiconductor manufacturing?
A central example in the available project announcements is Tata Group’s proposed semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera. Tata’s 2024 announcement set out a planned product mix and a target capacity, giving a clearer picture of the project’s intended role than a broad promise to manufacture chips.

The announcement named capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month. That is a planned capacity figure, not evidence that the fab has reached that output or is producing chips today. The announcement also does not establish customer orders, operating yields or commercial performance.

This is the application scope described in Tata’s announcement, not confirmation that customers in those markets have placed orders. A product category can be relevant to a large industry without every chip in that category being suitable for a particular customer’s design or price point.
Is demand enough to make India’s semiconductor push succeed?
Long-term growth in chip-using sectors can support a case for manufacturing investment, but it does not establish qualified demand for the specific products a new fab can produce. For the Dholera plan, the announced product mix supplies a demand thesis; the cited announcements do not quantify the addressable market, identify customer commitments or show that prospective orders would keep the facility utilised.

To judge whether demand matches the plan, watch for evidence that connects market interest to factory requirements:
- Product fit: whether customers need the planned chip categories and whether the chips meet their technical requirements.
- Committed volume: whether interest has progressed to named customer commitments or actual orders.
- Qualification: whether customers have validated the chips for their products, an important distinction from general interest in domestic supply.
- Price and utilisation: whether the fab can compete on cost while sustaining enough production to use its capacity effectively.
These are the tests needed to assess the demand case; the 2024 project announcement does not answer them. The sources cited here provide no quantitative demand forecast for the specific project.

Why do management and execution matter?
Chandrasekaran’s emphasis on strong capability points to an operational challenge as well as a strategic one. ETInfra’s March 2025 coverage placed his semiconductor remarks alongside discussion of efficiency, cost management and productivity in industry. Those are relevant concerns for a complex manufacturing project, but the report does not provide a fab-specific checklist or quantified performance targets.
A useful way to assess future claims is to distinguish project milestones from operating results. An announcement, construction progress, equipment installation, customer qualification and commercial production are different stages. Once production begins, output alone would still not establish success: relevant evidence would include the ability to meet specifications consistently, product quality, yields, reliability and competitive economics. The sources cited here do not establish where the Dholera project stands on those measures.
What is known—and what remains unconfirmed?
The available reporting establishes what Tata announced in 2024 and what Chandrasekaran said in 2024 and 2025. It does not establish the project’s current construction or commissioning schedule, operating status, customer commitments, yields or commercial performance. These are open questions, not evidence that the project has failed or succeeded. Any update on progress should be read with its date and the specific milestone it documents.

The distinction matters: India’s semiconductor push has a clear strategic rationale and Tata outlined a concrete intended product mix, but neither fact proves that planned capacity has become productive output. Demand that fits the products, alongside disciplined execution, is what would turn the ambition into a durable manufacturing capability.
