China’s surge in AI courses after DeepSeek R1 launched on January 20, 2025 is being driven by two forces at once: workers and employers need practical skills as AI spreads through jobs and education, while sellers turn fear of obsolescence into paid lessons, communities and “make money with AI” promises. Some training can be useful, but basic prompting advice is often available free, and anxiety-based marketing is not evidence that a course will improve your income.

What changed after DeepSeek R1

DeepSeek’s release rapidly created a market for instruction. China Daily reported that enterprises, online sellers and independent educators began offering courses through Xiaohongshu (RedNote), WeChat groups and paid online communities. RedNote posts advertised guides ranging from a few yuan to several hundred yuan. Common pitches included “If you don’t learn how to use AI today, you’ll be left behind tomorrow” and “How to use DeepSeek to earn money.”

A DeepSeek-course tag on Xiaohongshu had received almost 20 million views since the model’s release, according to the same report. Course descriptions typically bundle basic tool operation, prompt writing, applications in particular industries and strategies for making money. Some paid WeChat groups promise “exclusive” resources, even when similar introductory material is already circulating publicly.

The pattern is not limited to one platform. It combines short social-media tutorials, downloadable guides, cohort classes and continuing-access communities. Prices and quality vary widely, so the presence of a fee says little about the depth of the instruction.

Why people are willing to pay

The demand is not purely manufactured. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reported that the country’s core AI industry was worth more than 1.2 trillion yuan in 2025 and included more than 6,200 AI companies. The ministry also said that, by the end of 2025, more than 30 percent of manufacturing enterprises with annual main-business turnover of at least 20 million yuan had adopted AI.

Those figures give employees a concrete reason to learn workflow automation, data handling, model evaluation and other job-related skills. A factory, service business or office that introduces AI may need people who can select tools, write reliable instructions, check outputs and fit them into existing processes. A short course that teaches those tasks with real exercises can therefore have value even if its headline product is a popular chatbot.

How anxiety becomes a sales strategy

One user quoted in the reporting described the message as selling anxiety by presenting AI as a necessary survival tool. Yan Huaizhi, an associate professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, said the trend reflects both a desire to learn new skills and the way some agencies exploit a knowledge gap for quick profits. He also characterized selling tools to people eager to make money as a lucrative business model.

These comments document a marketing mechanism, not a measured national level of psychological distress. “You will be left behind” is persuasive because it converts an uncertain labor-market change into an immediate purchase decision. “Earn money with AI” is similarly broad: it can refer to ordinary productivity gains, freelance services, selling training, or speculative business ideas. A course should explain the actual work and customer demand involved rather than treating AI access as income by itself.

What paid courses usually contain

Course promise or format What a buyer may actually receive Risk to check
Basic DeepSeek use Account setup, interface tour and simple prompts Duplicated free tutorials and little practice
Prompt-writing class Prompt patterns, examples and feedback on outputs Rules may become outdated as models change
Industry application Workflows for writing, coding, marketing, research or operations Examples may not match your tools, data or legal duties
“Make money with AI” program Business ideas, sales scripts or freelance-service packaging Unverified earnings claims and no evidence of customer demand
Paid community Chat support, new files and peer discussion “Exclusive” material may be repackaged public information

The most defensible reason to pay is structured practice: original assignments, expert feedback, a project that resembles your job and updates when the model or interface changes. Convenience can also be worth paying for, but it should be identified as convenience rather than scarcity.

How to decide whether a course is worth paying for

  1. Define the job outcome. Write down the task you want to perform—such as drafting bilingual customer replies, analyzing a spreadsheet or building a retrieval workflow. Reject courses that promise prosperity without naming a concrete deliverable.
  2. Inspect the syllabus and exercises. Look for assignments that require you to produce, test and revise work. A list of prompt formulas without practice is an introductory reference, not professional training.
  3. Check the instructor. Confirm the person’s identity, relevant work and ability to demonstrate the claimed workflow. Testimonials alone do not establish competence.
  4. Ask how updates work. Record the model version, tools and last update date. Find out whether new lessons are included when the service changes, and whether access is one-time or recurring.
  5. Compare free alternatives first. China Daily has reported free DeepSeek and AI tutorials on Bilibili, including a local-deployment video with more than 2 million views. Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University have also offered free lectures or guides. If a paid class covers only the same basics, its price is mainly for organization and support.
  6. Read the refund and data terms. Check the cancellation window, what happens to community access, and whether assignments contain confidential company information. Do not upload employer data to a public model merely to complete a lesson.

Learning routes compared

Route Best for Advantages Limitations
Free official or university material Beginners building literacy No tuition; often more transparent about scope Less personal feedback and less job-specific support
Free video tutorials Testing a tool or learning a single task Large variety; quick to sample Quality, accuracy and update frequency vary
Paid structured course Learners who need deadlines, projects or feedback Sequenced lessons and accountability May repackage free information; recurring fees are possible
Employer or vocational training Workers applying AI in a defined role Closer to real systems, policies and measurable outcomes Availability depends on the employer or program

Where China’s education policy is heading

China’s Ministry of Education AI-plus-education action plan calls for AI courses across school and university education, upgrades to vocational programs, public AI-literacy resources, micro-credentials and employment-oriented training. If implemented broadly, that policy can move basic instruction into formal education and reduce the information scarcity that allows sellers to charge heavily for introductory material.

It also changes what a worthwhile private course should offer. As basic literacy becomes easier to obtain, differentiation will increasingly depend on supervised projects, sector-specific implementation, assessment, safety practices and evidence that a learner can perform a task—not on access to a chatbot alone.

Can an AI course really help you make money?

It can help indirectly when it teaches a marketable service and the learner can demonstrate reliable results. Examples might include reducing reporting time for a client, creating a documented customer-support workflow or deploying a model within an organization’s approved environment. The revenue comes from solving that problem, finding customers and delivering consistently.

No course can guarantee earnings merely by teaching prompts. Before buying an income-focused program, identify the customer, the problem, the required tools, the cost of delivery and a way to verify demand. Treat screenshots of revenue, countdown discounts and claims of effortless income as advertising until independently substantiated.

A practical way to start without overpaying

  1. Choose one work or study task and define a measurable result.
  2. Complete a free tutorial from a university, public institution or reputable educational channel.
  3. Use the skill on a small, non-sensitive project and record the time saved and errors found.
  4. Only then consider a paid course for feedback, deployment help or a credential that an employer recognizes.
  5. Review the course again after a model update; discard lessons that no longer match the current interface or capabilities.
