China’s smartphone shipments fell 15.4% year over year to 57.9 million units in Q3 2026, the market’s sixth consecutive quarterly decline, according to IDC figures reported by Reuters. Huawei led with 12.2 million shipments and 21% share; Apple ranked second with 17.8% share, despite a year-over-year shipment decline.
What the Q3 2026 figures show
The figures are shipment estimates, not a count of phones purchased by consumers at retail. They also do not measure revenue, profitability, consumer preference, or which phones are best. Reuters reported the Q3 IDC figures on October 13, 2026; the accessible report does not specify whether the estimates are preliminary or final or provide a detailed methodology note.
The 15.4% fall extends a run of quarterly declines that began before Q3. IDC’s Q2 analysis described shipments that quarter as down for a fifth consecutive quarter; the Q3 report calls it the sixth. Those descriptions are consistent with one another.

All Q3 vendor figures in the table are IDC data as reported by Reuters. The comparison is about shipments and reported share, not sales revenue or product quality. Huawei’s lead and growth direction stand out, but the available figures do not support calculating its exact growth rate.

Why shipments fell
Reuters’ account points to weak consumer spending alongside higher memory-chip and other component costs. IDC analyst Arthur Guo said vendors passed higher costs on to consumers, lifting retail prices while shipments shrank. The report does not quantify how much each factor contributed to the decline.
Q1 and Q2 analyses provide context for the pressure on the market, but their details should not be mistaken for Q3 measurements. IDC cited rising memory and component costs in Q1 and also discussed supply constraints and vendors prioritizing higher-end devices. In Q2, IDC cited higher component costs and fading government subsidies; it also reported that smartphone sales during the 618 shopping festival fell close to 15% year over year. Those are quarter-specific observations, not verified Q3 figures.

How Q3 compares with the first half of 2026

The reported decline was steeper in Q3 than in either of the first two quarters. The figures show the worsening year-over-year shipment comparison, but they do not by themselves identify how much of the change came from consumer demand, pricing, component costs, or other factors.

What the vendor split may—and may not—tell readers
Huawei’s 21% share and reported double-digit growth show it outperformed the direction of the broader market. Apple held the second-largest share while shipments fell. The other three named vendors also recorded declines, with Vivo reporting the largest percentage drop among them. These shipment figures do not establish why individual consumers chose one brand over another, or whether a vendor’s products are better choices for buyers.

In its Q2 analysis—not as a direct comment on Q3—Guo said Huawei and Apple held prices steady while competitors raised theirs, giving hesitant buyers a reason to purchase. That earlier-quarter explanation offers context for the competitive picture, but the Q3 report does not provide a matching vendor-by-vendor pricing analysis.
