Lufeng Nuclear Power Station in Guangdong has reached several different construction and testing milestones, but they apply to individual reactors rather than the six-reactor project as a whole. A 13 October 2026 NucNet report says welding of the main nuclear-island pipelines at Unit 6 was completed on 28 September, while a pressuriser was installed at Unit 1. Unit 5 is further along in its commissioning sequence after completing a cold functional test in April.
What changed at Lufeng in October 2026?
The latest report covers two separate events:
- Unit 6: Main nuclear-island pipeline welding was completed on 28 September 2026. NucNet reported that this work prepares the unit for nuclear-loop flushing and cold hydraulic testing.
- Unit 1: A pressuriser was installed, marking an equipment-installation step distinct from Unit 6’s welding milestone.
Neither event means the station is complete or operating. Lufeng’s reactors are progressing on different schedules, so a station-wide completion percentage cannot be derived from these announcements.

These milestones are not directly interchangeable. A containment-vessel installation, equipment hoist, pipeline-welding completion and functional test occur at different stages and measure different kinds of progress.

China General Nuclear (CGN) reported that the Unit 6 dome was hoisted on 14 July 2025. The company described that event as the transition from civil construction to equipment installation. The later completion of main nuclear-island pipeline welding on 28 September 2026 is a separate advancement in the unit’s mechanical installation work.

The next activities identified in the October report are nuclear-loop flushing and cold hydraulic testing. These tests are intended to clean and verify the installed systems before later commissioning stages. The welding milestone should therefore be read as preparation for those activities, not as evidence that Unit 6 has entered commercial operation.
Unit 1: major equipment installation continues
CGN said the nuclear-island CA03 module at Unit 1 was hoisted into place on 23 January 2026. The October report adds pressuriser installation as a later milestone. A pressuriser is part of the reactor coolant system and its installation is an equipment milestone; it does not by itself establish that the reactor is ready for fuel loading, testing or operation.

Unit 2: containment-building work
On 6 February 2026, CGN reported positioning the steel containment-vessel bottom head at the center of Unit 2’s reactor-building raft foundation. This places the event in the structural and containment-construction sequence. No later Unit 2 milestone is established by the dated updates summarized here.
Unit 5: testing at 223 bar.g
Unit 5 completed its cold functional test on 27 April 2026, according to CGN. The inspection conducted the previous day reached the stated maximum pressure platform of 223 bar.g. Because this was a cold functional test, it represents a commissioning-stage check of systems under pressure rather than proof that the reactor is generating electricity or that all six units are operational.

When are the reactors expected to operate?
CGN Power’s 2025 annual report listed expected operation years of 2027 for Unit 5, 2028 for Unit 6, and 2030 for Units 1 and 2.

Those years are planned dates, not guarantees or a new confirmation that the schedule has been met. The annual report warns that delivery delays, higher equipment or material costs, regulatory approvals, engineering or environmental issues, and changing safety requirements could affect construction and operation dates.

What remains uncertain
NucNet describes six reactors planned for the Guangdong site. The reported updates do not provide a complete unit-by-unit reactor-design breakdown, an overall construction percentage, total project cost, workforce figure or total generating capacity. Those figures should not be inferred from the individual milestones.
