There is no universal price winner between Chewy and Petco. The better value depends on your exact product, package size, eligible discounts, shipping, rewards you will actually redeem, and whether a membership fee is worthwhile. Compare an identical basket on the day you order, then include delivery requirements and pharmacy timing if those services matter.
Petco can be attractive when an eligible first Autoship order receives its capped introductory discount, when a recurring order exceeds the free-shipping threshold, or when store access is useful. Chewy can make more sense for frequent small orders if Chewy+ rewards and free shipping offset its annual fee. The offers below are retailer-stated terms accessed in October 2026 and can change.
The short answer: value is conditional
A headline promotion does not establish that one retailer is always cheaper. A fair comparison uses the same brand, formula, flavor, package weight and count at both stores. Calculate the final cost after an eligible promotion, shipping and the value of rewards you can realistically use. A lower shelf price can disappear once a shipping charge or membership fee is included.
For recurring supplies, Petco’s Autoship terms emphasize a potentially large first-order discount, while Chewy+ exchanges a yearly fee for free shipping and category-based rewards. Those structures favor different shopping patterns. Someone placing occasional, large orders may not benefit from paying for a membership; someone ordering small bags of food or health products every few weeks may value shipping savings more than a one-time introductory coupon.

Local convenience is another variable. A Petco store may help with pickup or an urgent purchase, but store coverage and inventory depend on your ZIP code and were not established here. Online prices, inventory, delivery dates and promotion eligibility should be checked for your address before payment.
How to compare the two retailers fairly
- Match the product exactly. Select the same manufacturer, product line, recipe or formula, package size and number of packages. A 12-pound bag and a 24-pound bag are not comparable simply because both are labeled with the same food name.
- Convert to a unit price. Divide the item price by ounces, pounds, tablets, cans or another meaningful unit. For multi-packs, divide by the number of individual items as well as by total weight when both figures affect your decision.
- Record the normal online price. Capture the price shown for the selected size, not a starting price for another variant. Prices and stock can change between adding an item to a cart and checkout.
- Check discount eligibility. Read whether the offer is limited to a first order, selected brands, selected products or a maximum dollar amount. Apply the discount only to qualifying merchandise.
- Add delivery costs. Use the shipping charge displayed for your destination and order total. A free-shipping threshold, membership benefit or prescription-handling rule can alter the result.
- Value rewards conservatively. Treat points or account credit as a benefit only if you understand how they are earned, redeemed and restricted. Do not subtract rewards as cash when they expire, exclude the products you buy or require a future purchase you would not otherwise make.
- Include recurring fees. Spread an annual membership fee across the orders or eligible spending that will actually occur during the membership year. Keep a one-time introductory discount separate from the recurring cost.

For a single order, show each component separately. For a year of recurring purchases, total all expected orders and then test the result against a no-membership scenario. Record the date and delivery ZIP code because both price and shipping eligibility are time- and location-sensitive.
Petco Autoship: what the discount really covers
Petco’s Autoship page states that a first Autoship order can receive up to 35% off select brands, with a maximum discount of $20. “Up to” is important: the rate is not guaranteed for every product, and the cap limits the dollar saving even when a qualifying item displays the headline percentage. Eligibility and frequency rules also apply.

For subsequent eligible Autoship orders, Petco says the discount is 5% off the current online selling price, subject to exclusions. That wording means the base price can move, and the 5% reduction is not a permanent price guarantee. Recalculate when the next shipment is scheduled rather than assuming the first-order economics continue.

Shipping and schedule controls
The same page says orders over $39 qualify for free shipping under its stated terms. Confirm whether your particular items, destination or special handling fall under an exception. Petco describes Autoship schedules as adjustable: you can change timing, skip a shipment or cancel. It also states, “Yes! You can cancel anytime.” The FAQ cautions that an order already processed will still be processed and charged, so cancel before processing if you do not want that shipment.
Perks points can add value
Petco’s Autoship FAQ says members of its free Perks plan earn points toward Petco Cash on purchases, including Autoship orders. The value depends on the program’s current redemption rules and whether you will use the resulting Petco Cash. Include earned credit in your comparison only after checking those terms; it is not automatically equivalent to an instant discount at checkout.
Chewy+: when a membership can pay off
Chewy lists Chewy+ at $59 per year after a 30-day trial on its membership page. The page advertises free shipping on every order, with no minimum, plus rewards of 5% back on cat and dog food and health or pharmacy items and 2% back on veterinary diets and other items, subject to the membership terms.
Break-even math before considering item prices
If all of your eligible annual spending earned 5% rewards, $59 divided by 0.05 equals $1,180 in eligible spending to offset the annual fee through rewards alone. At a 2% rate, the equivalent is $2,950. These are simple break-even illustrations, not a promise of savings: they exclude shipping value, category exclusions, reward limits and the fact that a mixed basket can earn both rates. Free shipping may lower the spending needed to justify membership, while unused rewards or a canceled trial can raise your effective cost.

Rewards and discounts can combine
Chewy says membership benefits can stack with item deals and Autoship savings, subject to its terms. Check the cart’s final line items rather than adding percentages mentally; a product may be excluded from one benefit, and a promotion may have its own end date or quantity limit.
Questions to answer before starting the trial
- How many orders will you place during the year, and what will each order cost to ship without membership?
- Which purchases fall into the 5% categories, which fall into the 2% category and which earn nothing?
- Will you redeem the rewards on products you would buy anyway?
- What happens if you do not cancel before the 30-day trial ends?
- Do the membership terms impose exclusions, caps or other limits not visible on an item page?
Use the live membership terms at checkout for the current answers. A membership is a financial decision, not proof that every Chewy item has a lower base price than the corresponding Petco item.
Shipping, delivery and everyday convenience
When Petco may be more convenient
Petco’s physical-store network can matter when you need an item immediately or want a pickup option. The availability of pickup, local inventory and delivery windows is address-specific; check your ZIP code and selected store. A store option can have practical value even when an online-only price comparison is close, particularly for food you cannot afford to run out of or supplies needed the same day.

When Chewy+ may be more convenient
Chewy+ is designed for frequent online orders because the stated shipping benefit applies to every order without a minimum. That can be useful for small, regular purchases that would otherwise fail a retailer’s free-shipping threshold. Compare the annual fee with the shipping charges you would actually incur, not with a hypothetical unlimited number of orders.

Recurring-order reliability
Before approving any Autoship schedule, verify the next processing date, quantity, substitute policy and price shown in the cart. Set a calendar reminder several days before processing so you can adjust an order when your pet’s diet, dosage or consumption changes. A discount is not a saving if it creates excess inventory or an unwanted charge.
Prescription and pharmacy orders need a separate test
Prescription economics and timing do not behave like ordinary food or supply orders. Authorization, verification, processing, delivery and temperature-sensitive handling can each affect the outcome.

Petco’s pharmacy details are documented on its Pet Pharmacy page. Chewy’s pharmacy offering and a first Autoship promotion for prescription medication appear on its home page; promotions can change. If a medication is needed by a specific date, contact the veterinarian and pharmacy early enough to allow authorization and delivery rather than choosing solely on a displayed price.

You are trying each service for the first time
Check whether the exact item qualifies for Petco’s first Autoship offer and how much of the $20 maximum it can use. Compare that one-time saving with Chewy’s non-membership price and any shipping charge. Do not treat a first-order promotion as a forecast for month two.

You place many small orders
Estimate annual shipping charges without Chewy+ and compare them with the $59 fee. Add the value of category-eligible rewards only if you will redeem them. Petco’s $39 shipping threshold may favor consolidating orders, but consolidation can be impractical when food or medication is needed sooner.
You buy mostly cat or dog food
Match the recipe and weight, then calculate unit cost after each retailer’s applicable recurring discount. Chewy+ lists a 5% reward rate for cat and dog food; Petco’s ongoing Autoship discount is stated as 5% on the current online selling price for eligible items. Shipping, reward redemption and base-price differences determine the final result.

Check nearby Petco stores for stock and pickup before ordering. If the item is not available locally, compare the earliest confirmed online arrival at both retailers. The practical cost of a missed meal or delayed treatment can exceed a small price difference.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing different quantities: a lower ticket price may represent half the weight or fewer doses.
- Using the promotional headline as the final price: “up to” rates, caps and selected-brand rules change the discount you receive.
- Ignoring the recurring rate: Petco’s first-order rate and later 5% Autoship rate are separate calculations.
- Assuming rewards are cash: points, Petco Cash and Chewy+ rewards may have category, redemption or expiration conditions.

Choose Chewy when the $59 Chewy+ fee is outweighed by your expected shipping savings and eligible rewards, especially across frequent small orders. If neither pattern applies, compare the delivered total for your actual basket and order from the retailer with the lower current cost and acceptable arrival date.
