To find out whether YouTube removed a video, check the video’s notice in YouTube Studio and read the details. A Community Guidelines removal, a Content ID claim, a copyright takedown, and a channel termination are different actions with different remedies. A video being hard to find alone does not prove YouTube deleted it.

Check what happened before you respond

  1. Open YouTube Studio and check the video’s status and notice. For a Community Guidelines action, look at the Channel violations card or the video’s notice; for copyright, open the Copyright Details section.
  2. Read the stated reason and identify whether the content is removed, restricted, or still available with a claim. Use the notice and your account email to check for a channel termination.
  3. Choose the response that matches that action. An appeal, a copyright retraction request, and a counter notification are not interchangeable.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guide for removed videos describes common notices and where to find more information. The notice in your own account is the best starting point: general guidance cannot establish why a particular video is missing.

Match the notice to the action

Notice or account state What it may mean Next step
“Video removed: Inappropriate content” A Community Guidelines removal. Review the named policy and the video in Studio; appeal if you believe YouTube made a mistake.
“Video removed: Terms of Service violation” A Terms of Service or copyright issue. Follow the notice to the specific details and applicable process.
“Includes copyrighted content,” “Muted due to copyrighted content,” or blocked in some or all regions These can indicate a Content ID claim. The video may be restricted or its audio changed without being subject to a copyright takedown. Open Copyright Details to see what material was matched and review the claim options.
“Video taken down” A copyright owner’s removal request that YouTube found appears valid. The video is removed and the channel receives a copyright strike. Review the removal request and consider the copyright-specific options.
“Video removed – trademark issue” A trademark-related action. Review the notice and YouTube’s trademark policy.
Several videos or the whole channel are inaccessible A channel termination may be involved. Check the termination email and Studio for the reason and use the termination appeal process if applicable.

A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request. YouTube describes a removal request as a legal request, usually submitted by a copyright owner or authorized representative; when it appears valid, YouTube removes the content and applies a copyright strike. See YouTube’s copyright strike guidance.

If YouTube removed a video for Community Guidelines

  1. In Studio, open the notice or Channel violations card and note the policy YouTube says was violated.
  2. Compare that policy with the actual video and its context. If the decision seems mistaken, submit an appeal through the notice or Studio workflow and explain the specific reason you believe the removal is incorrect.
  3. Do not delete the video before considering an appeal. YouTube says deletion does not remove a strike and prevents you from appealing that removal again.

YouTube’s current Community Guidelines appeal guidance allows up to one year to appeal a content removal. Warnings and strikes have a separate six-month appeal window, and each strike may be appealed once. Check the live notice for the process and applicable limits before acting.

If the notice concerns copyright

Content ID claim

A Content ID claim can affect monetization, visibility, or audio, including by blocking a video in some regions. Read Copyright Details to see which material was matched and what options are offered. Do not assume that a claim means the video has been formally taken down.

Copyright removal request and strike

If the video was removed after a copyright request, YouTube lists three ways to resolve the strike: complete Copyright School and wait 90 days, ask the claimant to retract the request, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for a copyright exception. Completing Copyright School and waiting lets the strike expire; it does not restore the video.

A counter notification is a legal process, not a routine appeal or guaranteed recovery button. Review YouTube’s copyright strike guidance and the notice carefully before choosing it. If the request is scheduled, YouTube says you may have seven days to take specified steps before the removal and strike take effect; available options depend on the request’s stage.

If YouTube terminated your channel

A termination affects the channel, not just one video. YouTube lists repeated Community Guidelines or Terms of Service violations, a single severe abuse case, and channels dedicated to a policy violation among possible reasons. Start with the termination email or Studio notice, which states the reason and points to the relevant process.

For a Community Guidelines termination, YouTube provides an appeal route in Studio, allows up to one year to appeal, and limits the number of appeals. A copyright-related termination follows a different process, including a counter notification when the creator believes the claims are incorrect. See YouTube’s channel or account termination guidance.

YouTube says a terminated channel can no longer download its YouTube content through that channel, although Google data remains downloadable. Its guidance on downloading YouTube data explains that distinction. Keeping separate copies before a platform issue can help preserve your files, but a backup cannot restore a video on YouTube or change an enforcement decision.
