A slow USB port can bottleneck an external drive, but the fastest-looking socket is not necessarily the fastest one. Check the port’s published data rate, then confirm that the cable and drive support it too: the connection can run only as fast as its slowest link.
Why the port can slow a file copy
USB 2.0 high-speed is rated at 480 Mbps, while USB 3.0 supports up to 5 Gbps, according to Microsoft’s Windows USB FAQ. If a SuperSpeed drive is connected through a USB 2.0 port, it operates at USB 2.0 high-speed instead.
Those figures describe USB signaling rates, not guaranteed file-copy speeds. The drive, the source disk, the kind of files being copied, hubs, and host or controller behavior can all affect the result. USB-IF’s January 2024 consumer naming guidance describes signaling tiers from USB 5Gbps through USB 80Gbps; the label indicates a capability, not a promise that a particular copy will reach that rate (USB-IF guidance).

Use markings as clues
Microsoft says USB 3.0 ports are typically blue or marked with the SuperSpeed logo, and newer PCs may have both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Color is not a universal specification, so do not treat it as proof.
#1 Best Overall
- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
Confirm the model’s specifications
Look up the exact PC or motherboard model and check its official port specifications or port map. Identify the stated data rate for each port, using consumer labels such as USB 5Gbps or USB 10Gbps where available. Without your model number, it is not possible to determine which physical port on your machine is fastest.
USB-IF says USB 3.2 covers earlier 3.x specifications and includes 5, 10, and 20 Gbps data rates (USB 3.2 overview). Because specification-version names can be confusing, the data-rate label is often more useful when comparing advertised capabilities.

Check the whole connection, not just the socket
A fast transfer requires compatible capabilities in the PC’s host port, the cable, and the external device. If any part supports only USB 2.0, the link may operate at USB 2.0 speed.
USB-C describes the connector, not its speed
A USB-C socket tells you the connector family; it does not tell you which data protocol or rate the port supports. USB-IF states that “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®” (USB Type-C cable and connector guidance). A USB 2.0 Type-C cable lacks the signals needed for USB 3.2 or USB4, so using it with faster equipment can limit the connection to USB 2.0.

Match the cable and drive to the port
Check the cable’s stated data rate and the drive’s interface specifications. A cable that only supports USB 2.0, an older external drive, or an adapter or hub that limits the connection can prevent a faster port from delivering its full capability. USB-IF also notes that USB4 shares link capacity among device types, so its top signaling rate does not guarantee a faster file copy (USB4 overview).
Diagnose a transfer that is still slow
- Connect directly to a known faster port. Use the PC or motherboard specification to identify one; bypass any hub or dock for the test.
- Verify the cable and drive. Confirm their published data capabilities and, for USB-C, do not infer speed from the connector shape alone.
- Try another suitable cable and port. A damaged cable or signal-integrity issue in a nominally faster cable can interfere with SuperSpeed operation.
- Check hubs and firmware. Microsoft lists a USB 2.0 hub, old hub firmware, and outdated device or host-controller firmware among possible causes of a device failing to run at SuperSpeed.
- Consider storage and workload limits. If the connection is appropriate, the external drive, source drive, or the files being copied may be the limiting factor.
Microsoft’s FAQ includes ways to inspect negotiated USB speed for Windows 8-era interfaces; those menus should not be assumed to exist in current Windows releases. The practical first checks are the PC’s model-specific specifications and a direct connection that removes intermediary hardware.

What a port upgrade can—and cannot—change
Moving a drive from USB 2.0 to a faster compatible port removes that particular connection bottleneck. It does not establish how much faster a file copy will be: the official sources do not give an average improvement or a measured copy result, and the drive and workload still matter. A faster external SSD is worth considering only if the existing storage is the limiting component and the PC port and cable can support its rate; a cable upgrade is relevant when the current cable is the limiting link.
