If your laptop has no sound, first check whether audio is muted, turned down, or playing through the wrong output. Then follow the steps for your operating system: Windows and macOS use different settings and troubleshooting tools. Most checks are reversible, so there is no need to jump straight to replacing speakers or changing drivers.
Start by identifying what is failing
Notice whether all audio is missing, only one app is silent, sound is unusually quiet or distorted, or the laptop does not list an output device. This distinction helps narrow the next check:
- One app is silent: Check that app’s volume and output selection first. Windows can route or mute an individual app even while system sounds work.
- All sound is missing: Check the selected output, system volume, mute state, and any connected audio devices.
- Sound is quiet or distorted: Check system and app levels; on Windows, audio enhancements or the default audio format may also affect output.
- No output device appears: On Windows, detection, a disabled device, or a driver problem may be involved. A missing device by itself does not prove the speakers are physically damaged.
For Windows app-specific volume and routing, see Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guide.
Check volume, mute, and output selection
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the output device you intend to use. Audio may be routed to headphones, a USB audio device, a Bluetooth device, or an external display rather than the laptop speakers.
- Check the system volume and confirm that mute is off.
- Open the Volume mixer and check the affected app’s level and mute state as well as the system level. If the app offers its own output-device setting, confirm that it points to the intended device.
For low or distorted Windows audio, Microsoft also recommends testing with audio enhancements turned off and trying a different default audio format. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; change one setting at a time and test playback. See Microsoft’s guide to low or quiet sound in Windows.
#1 Best Overall
- 2W 8 Ohm Internal Magnet Speaker
- Size : 28 x 5mm/1.1" x 0.2"(D*T)
- Shape : Round Metal shell; 2 wires
- Widely use for mini box speakers, music player, multimedia speakers, doorbell, computer, etc.
- Package Content : 4 x Internal Magnet Speaker
macOS
- Check the volume inside the app you are using.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output.
- Select Mac speakers or the built-in speakers listed for your model, then check output volume and make sure mute is off.
Apple’s instructions are at If the internal speakers on your Mac aren’t working.
Isolate headphones, displays, and other connected devices
A connected accessory can become the selected output, making the laptop’s built-in speakers seem broken. Disconnect headphones and external audio devices, then test the internal speakers. Also verify that external speakers are powered on, their hardware volume is raised, cables are secure, and the intended output is selected.

- PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP -- For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
- Wired headphones or speakers: Unplug and reconnect the cable firmly. If you are testing external speakers, check their power and physical volume controls.
- USB audio: Confirm the device is connected and selected as the output. If needed, try another USB port.
- Bluetooth audio: Check whether the laptop is still connected to a headset or speaker and whether that device is selected for output.
- External display: A display connected by HDMI, USB-C, or another audio-capable connection may be selected as the output. Switch back to the built-in speakers to test them.
On a Mac, Apple advises disconnecting headphones, USB or Thunderbolt audio devices, external speakers, and external displays while checking the internal speakers. This is a way to isolate the audio path; it does not establish that an accessory is defective.

Run Windows audio troubleshooting and restart
On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Follow the prompts, apply any suggested fix, and test audio again. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance also includes checking sound settings and restarting, particularly when an output device is missing.

If Windows does not detect an output device
A missing output can result from an audio driver that is missing, outdated, disabled, failing to load, or from a device or driver problem. Check detection before concluding that the speakers need repair:

- If it is not listed, use Device Manager’s Show hidden devices and Scan for hardware changes options, then check again.
- Restart the laptop and see whether the output device appears in Settings > System > Sound.
Microsoft’s steps for an undetected output device are in Fix missing or undetected audio output device in Windows.
Update or reinstall a Windows audio driver if simpler checks fail
Try driver changes only after checking routing, volume, connected devices, and the built-in troubleshooter. Microsoft advises updating the audio driver; if necessary, uninstalling it so Windows can reinstall it, trying the generic Windows driver, or installing the current driver from the laptop maker for your version of Windows. Restart after a driver change and test again. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back that driver where the option is available.

Use Windows tools or the laptop manufacturer’s support site for drivers rather than treating a third-party driver utility as the default fix. Microsoft’s Windows audio guide describes the update and reinstall options.
When to contact support or arrange service
If Windows still has no usable output after its troubleshooting and the laptop maker’s appropriate driver steps, contact the laptop manufacturer. For a Mac, if the built-in speakers remain silent after checking app volume, selecting the internal speakers, confirming mute and output volume, and disconnecting external devices, Apple says service may be needed. Neither a missing Windows device nor an unsuccessful settings check alone establishes a specific hardware fault; diagnosis may require model-specific testing.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Some troubleshooting steps may still apply, but follow current lifecycle information and consider the support implications for a device that remains on Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information.
