To enable a microphone, allow access at every layer the app uses: your operating system, the app or desktop program, and—if you are in a browser—the specific website. Then select the right input and test it. If access is already allowed, check the mic’s mute switch, connection, and input level before changing settings.
Check the microphone and mute switch first
Make sure the microphone or headset is connected. For wireless equipment, confirm it is paired and connected. Check for a physical mute switch, headset button, or boom mic positioned in its muted position. These basic checks can explain why an otherwise enabled microphone captures no sound. Microsoft lists connection and mute checks in its microphone troubleshooting guidance.
Allow microphone access in Windows
Windows has separate privacy controls: device access, app access, and—on Windows 11—a control for desktop apps. Turning on one does not necessarily grant access through the others.

- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- If the app appears in the list, turn on access for that app.
- For a conventional desktop program, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps are not individually controlled in the app list.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access for this device and Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Allow access for the relevant Store app or desktop apps as needed.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its permission steps for both Windows versions are in Turn on app permissions for your microphone in Windows.

Allow microphone access on a Mac
macOS Ventura or later
- Quit the app that needs the microphone.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Enable the app, reopen it, and test the microphone.
macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave
Open Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone, then enable the app. Apple says these audio-input permissions also cover external USB microphones and audio interfaces. If an external device still does not work, Apple advises checking the manufacturer for software updates and compatibility information. Allow the browser and the specific website
A browser-based meeting or recording service needs the site’s permission as well as any required operating-system and browser access. If you allowed the browser in Windows or macOS but denied the site, the website may still be unable to use the microphone.

- When the site requests microphone access, allow it. If no prompt appears or access was previously blocked, open the browser’s site permissions and change microphone access for that site.
- Where the browser offers a device choice, select the microphone you intend to use.
- Reload the page or retry the call after changing the permission.

Test in Windows Sound settings
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, choose the microphone you want to use.
- Use Start test, speak at a normal volume, stop the test, and play the recorded sample.
- If the recording is too quiet, adjust the input volume and test again.
If no input device appears, check its connection and use Windows’ input troubleshooting options. Microsoft describes these checks in Fix microphone problems.

Check the calling app too
Many calling apps have their own microphone selector. Confirm it points to the same intended input and that the app is not muted. Microsoft Teams, for example, offers a test call that records and plays back a short sample in supported app contexts; Microsoft says the feature is unavailable in Teams for web. Match the fix to what you see
- The site or app says permission is blocked: Check the operating-system permission, app permission, and—if using a browser—the site permission.
- The microphone is missing from the input list: Check the cable or wireless pairing, then investigate sound-device configuration and device troubleshooting.
- The device is listed but the test is silent: Check physical and in-app mute, confirm the selected input, and verify the connection.
- The test records sound, but it is too quiet: Raise input volume and repeat the test.
- An external Mac microphone or interface still fails: Check the device manufacturer’s compatibility information and software updates.
These checks do not require buying new equipment. If you need a separate input because the built-in microphone is unavailable or unsuitable, an external USB microphone is one option; Apple includes USB microphones among the audio inputs covered by its guidance.

What about phones?
Microphone permission on mobile depends on the operating system and app. Microsoft’s Teams guidance includes an iOS-specific example, but that route should not be treated as a universal setting path for every app or device. The steps above focus on Windows and macOS.
