A rebasing token can show a different wallet balance because its code changes how many tokens an address holds. That is separate from whether a bridge or cross-chain swap supports the token’s accounting. Check the token and network in a block explorer, then verify that the exact route accepts the asset and the destination token representation before confirming.

Why did my token balance change after a rebase?

Rebasing tokens use their code to adjust supply, which can change the number of tokens shown for a holder without an ordinary transfer. Wallet displays may lag or miss the updated balance if the token does not emit events the wallet relies on. Uniswap Labs recommends checking the token balance on a blockchain explorer: Uniswap Labs’ explanation of changing token balances.

  1. Switch the explorer to the network where you hold the asset.
  2. Find the exact token contract address, rather than relying only on the token name or ticker.
  3. Check the balance for your wallet address on that contract.
  4. Compare the explorer result with the wallet display. If they differ, investigate wallet support or display behavior before assuming the funds are gone.

A rebase is only one possible explanation for a discrepancy. A transfer, a different selected network, an unsupported token, or a wallet display issue can also explain what you see.

Can a bridge or cross-chain swap handle a rebasing token?

Only if the specific integration supports that token’s accounting behavior. Many cross-chain systems need to reconcile the amount that actually leaves the source chain with the amount credited on the destination chain. LayerZero’s standards discussion explains why ordinary debit-and-credit accounting—which assumes the sent and received amounts match—can fail for rebasing assets, and why support requires reconciling actual balance changes: LayerZero’s cross-chain token standards.

Restrictions vary by route. Gnosis Chain’s OmniBridge documentation says bridge operations are disabled for rebasing tokens because a balance reduction could leave users unable to exit: Gnosis Chain OmniBridge documentation. That is a restriction for this bridge, not evidence that every bridge rejects every rebasing token.

Why DEX liquidity risks are different from swap support

Using a DEX to swap a token and depositing it as liquidity are distinct activities. Protocol behavior also differs by version; the documented risks below should not be generalized to every DEX.

Protocol Documented rebasing-token issue Who or what is exposed
Uniswap v2 A negative rebase can make token balances drift from recorded reserves; a positive rebase can leave surplus balances outside reserve accounting. After a negative rebase, Uniswap says the loss can fall to the next transacting account. See Uniswap v2’s rebasing-token documentation.
Uniswap v3 A negative rebase can reduce the value of an active liquidity position. Liquidity providers bear the loss while their position is active. See Uniswap v3’s protocol-issues documentation.

These are liquidity and protocol-accounting concerns. They do not, by themselves, establish whether a particular cross-chain swap route accepts a token.

How stETH and wstETH illustrate the difference

stETH is a rebasing token; wstETH is a wrapper whose token count stays stable while its value in stETH accrues. Lido describes wstETH as an “ERC-20 value-accruing token wrapper for stETH.” Its balance does not change with oracle reports, while the stETH value represented by that balance changes. Lido describes the wrapper as useful for integrations that do not support rebasing tokens, including some cross-chain uses: Lido’s wstETH integration guide.

That does not make wstETH a universal route recommendation. Lido’s cross-chain adoption guide cautions that technically bridging stETH or wstETH as a standard non-upgradable ERC-20 may not fit its long-term interoperability approach or support stETH’s rebasing behavior: Lido’s cross-chain adoption guide. Check the exact wstETH contract representation, the source and destination chains, and the bridge or swap’s stated support. Do not assume the same wrapper exists for other rebasing assets.

What to check before confirming an omnichain swap

A cross-chain swap combines moving assets between networks with an exchange along the route. For example, Uniswap says its cross-chain swaps currently use Across plus Uniswap routing; the quote displays fees, while completion time depends on the networks and current conditions. Those details describe that product, not every provider: Uniswap’s cross-chain swap guidance.

What to do if the swap completes but the token is not visible

  1. Select the destination network in your wallet and check whether the receiving wallet supports the token.
  2. Use the destination chain’s explorer to look up the relevant transaction and token contract, then compare the on-chain balance with the wallet display.
  3. Check the specific protocol’s transaction status and support instructions. Uniswap’s troubleshooting guidance recommends manual bridging and swapping only when needed; do not resubmit blindly: Uniswap’s cross-chain swap troubleshooting guide.

When a same-asset bridge is a better fit

A same-asset bridge moves an asset between chains without necessarily exchanging it for a different token. It still must support the exact asset and representation. Stargate V2 describes a “taxi” mode for immediate messaging and a “bus” mode that batches transfers, where destination receipt may take longer: Stargate V2’s overview. Check its current route details and token support rather than treating either mode as a workaround for unsupported rebasing accounting.
