LiteLLM deployments older than 1.83.9 should be treated as exposed to two high-risk vulnerabilities. Check Point Research says CVE-2026-35029 lets a low-privilege authenticated user reach administrative functions, while CVE-2026-59823 lets a user redirect gateway traffic to capture provider API keys. Upgrade to LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later, then review access and rotate credentials if compromise is possible.
What Check Point found
LiteLLM is an open-source gateway between applications and large-language-model providers. It routes prompts and responses, stores provider credentials, creates access keys and records usage. That central position means a gateway compromise can spread beyond one application to the wider AI environment.
Check Point Research reported that LiteLLM had about 97 million downloads per month and more than 59,000 GitHub stars at the time of its 2026 report. The researchers demonstrated full system takeover, file access, credential theft and remote code execution in a controlled test environment.

The two title-specific issues require authentication. LiteLLM’s April 3, 2026 security update says an attacker needs a valid proxy API key; unauthenticated users cannot exploit these flaws directly. Any account that can authenticate to an unpatched gateway can nevertheless become an entry point.

The two vulnerabilities and their consequences

CVE-2026-35029: administrative access from a low-privilege account
Check Point says a minimally privileged authenticated user could invoke functions intended for administrators. The vulnerable behavior included changing runtime proxy settings and environment variables, reading files from the server and replacing privileged account credentials. Researchers also describe registering custom endpoint handlers that caused the gateway to download and execute code supplied by an attacker.
LiteLLM’s own security notice identifies the /config/update endpoint as the immediate problem: it did not check the caller’s role. The vendor now requires the proxy_admin role for that endpoint. Check Point’s advisory lists the issue as high severity, published May 14, 2026 and updated September 7, 2026.

CVE-2026-59823: redirecting requests to steal provider keys
The SSRF flaw lets an authenticated gateway user influence where LiteLLM sends a request. By directing a route to an attacker-controlled server, the attacker can receive the provider API key that LiteLLM uses for the request. A stolen key can then be used outside the gateway against the affected provider account, potentially generating unauthorized model usage and costs.

Check Point says both vulnerabilities are fixed in LiteLLM 1.83.9 and later and advises organizations running earlier releases to update immediately. Its affected-version guidance treats deployments before 1.83.9 as exposed to both issues.

There is an important version distinction in the vendor and researcher notices. LiteLLM’s April 3 update records that the /config/update privilege-escalation defect was fixed in version 1.83.0 when the proxy_admin check was added. Version 1.83.9 is the safer combined baseline because it incorporates the fix guidance for both CVE-2026-35029 and CVE-2026-59823.
Why the gateway’s position matters
A standalone LiteLLM proxy is not the only deployment to check. Check Point warns that LiteLLM can be embedded in internal tools and application platforms, where teams may not recognize it as a separately managed service. In either form, the gateway may hold credentials for several providers and serve many applications.

- A stolen provider key can be reused directly against the provider account.
- Administrative access can expose files, environment variables and other secrets on the gateway host.
- Unexpected routing or key creation can increase model spend before anyone notices.
- An attacker who reaches code-execution paths may pivot from the gateway into surrounding infrastructure.
How to check and remediate a deployment
- Inventory every instance. Find direct LiteLLM proxies as well as copies bundled inside internal applications, platforms and container images. Record the running version, exposure to users or networks and the providers whose credentials are configured.
- Upgrade to 1.83.9 or later. Apply the update to every affected deployment, including replicas and standby environments. Verify the version actually running after restarting the service; updating a build pipeline alone is not enough.
- Review accounts and roles. Remove unused users, disable stale keys and reduce privileges. Pay particular attention to accounts that can call administrative configuration routes or create keys.
- Test effective permissions. Using a controlled test account, confirm that a non-administrator cannot call administrative configuration endpoints such as
/config/update. Test key-generation and route-permission behavior as well, because successful authentication does not by itself prove that role enforcement is correct. - Rotate provider credentials when exposure is possible. Replace keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and any other configured provider if logs, account history or the deployment’s exposure indicate unauthorized access. Update the gateway and dependent applications with the new values, then revoke the old keys.
- Review logs and billing. Look for unfamiliar destinations, newly created routes or keys, unusual request patterns, file-access errors and spending spikes. Compare gateway records with provider usage and billing records from the period in which the instance was vulnerable.
- Add independent testing. Include the gateway in routine penetration tests and vulnerability assessments, covering authentication, role checks, SSRF protections, secret handling and embedded deployments.
- Apply network protections where available. Check Point customers can review the relevant Security Gateway IPS protections in the CVE-2026-35029 advisory and install policy according to that advisory. Network controls supplement, but do not replace, patching and credential rotation.
Related LiteLLM privilege issues
Check Point separately published guidance on CVE-2026-47101 and CVE-2026-47102 on June 22, 2026. That advisory says LiteLLM versions before 1.83.14 allowed an authenticated internal_user to create API keys with routes outside the user’s permissions, use those keys against admin-only routes and escalate to proxy_admin. These CVEs are not the two flaws covered by the title, but they are relevant when assessing whether a deployment’s identity and key-permission boundaries work as intended. Organizations should review the separate advisory and its version requirement in addition to upgrading to 1.83.9 or later for the two issues discussed here.
What LiteLLM says it changed
In its April 3, 2026 security update, LiteLLM stated: “/config/update didn’t check the caller’s role. Any authenticated user could modify the proxy’s runtime configuration, which could lead to arbitrary file read, admin account takeover, or remote code execution. We now require the proxy_admin role on this endpoint.” The company also said it engaged Veria Labs to audit the proxy and launched a bug-bounty program. Its enterprise offering advertises SSO/SAML, audit logs, spend tracking, multi-team management and guardrails, but those controls do not remove the need to patch the underlying gateway.

Bottom line for operators
Assume a LiteLLM release earlier than 1.83.9 is vulnerable to both CVE-2026-35029 and CVE-2026-59823. Patch first, then verify role enforcement and key-generation permissions. If an unpatched or exposed instance may have been accessed, rotate every provider key it held and investigate gateway, provider and billing logs for evidence of misuse.
