To find out whether a phone can work on a carrier’s network, enter its IMEI in that carrier’s official compatibility or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker. Then check separately whether the phone is unlocked. A compatibility result is an eligibility check—not proof of current carrier, coverage, or performance.
What an IMEI carrier check can tell you
An IMEI identifies a handset so a carrier can assess it against that carrier’s network requirements. T-Mobile says its checker uses the IMEI to understand a device’s capabilities and check whether it is unlocked. That does not make an IMEI a universal lookup for the network a phone currently uses or the carrier that locked it.
Use the checker belonging to the network you plan to join. T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T each provide tools for checking devices against their own requirements. Their results are not interchangeable, and the available sources do not establish that one carrier’s checker is universally more accurate than another.
How to check compatibility with an IMEI
- Choose the intended carrier. Open its official BYOD or compatibility checker: T-Mobile’s BYOD page, Verizon’s BYOD checker, or AT&T’s IMEI finder.
- Find the phone’s IMEI. On many phones, dialing
*#06#displays it. You can also look in the device settings. AT&T lists these paths: on iPhone, Settings → General → About; on Android, Settings → About Phone → Status Information → IMEI. The IMEI may also be printed on the original box or SIM tray. Menu names can vary by device and software version. AT&T’s IMEI instructions provide its lookup guidance. - Enter the 15-digit IMEI in the carrier’s checker. Verizon specifies a 15-digit entry; make sure you have selected the intended network. Avoid posting the full identifier publicly.
- Read the exact result. A compatible status indicates the carrier’s tool considers the handset eligible under its checks. Partial, incompatible, or unknown results need follow-up rather than guesswork.
- Check lock status separately. A phone can be technically compatible yet locked to another carrier. Contact the current carrier if the phone’s settings do not clarify its status or if you need to request an unlock.
- Choose a SIM activation method. If the phone is eligible and unlocked, follow the carrier’s activation instructions for a physical SIM or eSIM, depending on support for that device and network.
How to interpret compatibility, lock, and unknown results
Compatible
This is a useful indication that the carrier may accept the handset, not a promise that every feature will work or that service will perform well where you use it. T-Mobile specifically cautions that it cannot guarantee the functionality or performance of all non-T-Mobile devices; speed, call quality, and feature compatibility can vary. Check the intended carrier’s own guidance for the result you received.

Partially compatible or no match
A partial result can mean the phone lacks support for some network capabilities. T-Mobile advises checking the device’s supported frequencies and its support for VoLTE and Extended Range LTE when a match is not found. If the checker does not explain the result, ask the carrier or device maker to verify the exact model and supported features before activating.
Unknown
An unknown result means the checker could not determine compatibility. It is not confirmation that the phone will work or that it will not work. Contact the carrier with the exact model information and ask it to assess the device.

Locked by another carrier
Lock status is distinct from network compatibility. T-Mobile states that a device must be unlocked for BYOD on its network, and Verizon lists “locked by another carrier” separately from compatibility outcomes. Check the phone’s settings or contact the carrier to which it is locked; unlock eligibility and conditions depend on that carrier and device.

Lost or stolen listing
Verizon’s checker may report a device listed as lost or stolen. Separately, GSMA describes a system in which participating operators share reported lost or stolen IMEIs and other participating operators may choose to block them. Participation is not universal, so this mechanism does not establish that every carrier or country checks the same records. GSMA’s Device Check description was published in 2015 and explains the mechanism, not the current status of an individual handset.

Each checker evaluates a phone for its own network. No comparative accuracy testing is established here, so use the tool for the carrier you intend to join rather than treating one result as a universal verdict.

What an IMEI result does not prove
- It does not necessarily identify the phone’s current carrier. The carrier tools described here assess eligibility for their networks; they do not establish a universal current-carrier lookup.
- It does not prove the phone is unlocked. Verify lock status independently, even if the device is compatible.
- It does not guarantee coverage or performance. A handset’s network capabilities and the carrier’s service where you use it are separate considerations.
- It does not confirm that every lost-or-stolen database includes the device. GSMA’s description covers participating operators, not universal participation.
