To check whether sensitive-looking content can leak during a browser screen share, use a small page filled only with unmistakably fake markers, then inspect what the recipient or recording actually receives. Repeat the check for each browser and sharing surface you support. A picker can influence which surface a user selects; it does not prove that content inside the captured surface has been redacted.
What a browser redaction check can—and cannot—tell you
Screen sharing follows a capture path: an application requests capture, and the user chooses a screen, window, or browser tab. The resulting media stream can be recorded or shared. Chrome’s documentation says a website cannot preselect a specific window or screen: “This is by design, as that would give the web app too much power over the user.” Chrome for Developers’ screen-sharing controls documentation, authored by François Beaufort and Elad Alon, describes the relevant controls.
A selected surface may still show something the presenter did not expect. Mozilla warns that sharing a browser window or entire screen with an untrusted site can expose activity, including private information from another site appearing in the shared view. Its Firefox help article was last updated on 2017-01-11; it explains the underlying risk, not every current Firefox prompt or interface.

A fixture check gives your team a repeatable way to inspect the capture path for scenarios it supports. It is not a certified test method: the reviewed official sources do not define a fixture schema, cross-browser benchmark, or accuracy standard.

Build a small synthetic fixture
Keep the test data obviously fabricated so it cannot be mistaken for a real secret or account. For example, use labels such as TEST-EMAIL-001 and FAKE-ACCOUNT-002. Do not use real passwords, customer records, account numbers, or credentials.
Include a page with visible markers and at least one plausible unintended exposure location, such as a second tab or a test popup. The point is to check what appears in the actual capture—not just what the presenter expects the picker to share.

Run and record the check
- List the paths you support. Record the browser and relevant version, and whether the intended share is a tab, application window, or full display.
- Set up a controlled browser state. Open the fixture page, then create the additional synthetic tab or popup you want to check. Keep the scenario consistent between runs.
- Start sharing through the product’s normal flow. Select the surface your users are expected to select. Do not treat the picker’s options as evidence that content has been redacted.
- Inspect the receiver-side image or recording. Compare what the presenter expected to share with what the remote recipient or recording actually shows. Look for every synthetic marker, including those placed in the other test state.
- Log the result by scenario. Record which markers appeared, where they appeared, and whether the behavior was redaction, blocking, or simply visibility. Repeat for each supported browser and sharing path.

Understand the safeguards around the capture path
Browser picker controls shape selection
Chrome documents controls including displaySurface, monitorTypeSurfaces, surfaceSwitching, selfBrowserSurface, and systemAudio. Depending on the option, a site can emphasize a surface type, omit screens from the picker, or control whether a browser-level tab-switching button is offered. These controls affect the selection experience; they do not demonstrate that page content has been redacted.
Chrome’s documentation lists desktop introduction versions of Chrome 107 for displaySurface, surfaceSwitching, and selfBrowserSurface; Chrome 105 for systemAudio; and Chrome 119 for monitorTypeSurfaces. These are compatibility notes, not guarantees for every current browser, operating system, or deployment. The documentation cautions that defaults can change and encourages explicit settings.

Meeting software may detect some sensitive content
Microsoft says Teams sensitive-content detection is part of Teams Premium. When enabled, it scans shared content for specified types, including payment-card and certain national identification numbers. If it detects a supported type, it notifies the presenter and meeting organizer and prompts the presenter to stop sharing. This is a separate, bounded meeting-software safeguard—not a complete browser-redaction solution.
Microsoft documents important limits: detection does not support Microsoft Whiteboard, camera content, PowerPoint Live, Excel Live, or “Browse my computer”; non-English and fast-moving shared content are not detected. The setting must be enabled before a meeting starts to take effect without requiring participants to leave and rejoin, and end-to-end encryption is unavailable in meetings with detection enabled. Edge enterprise policy can block capture
Microsoft Edge’s ScreenCaptureAllowed policy allows or denies screen-capture APIs such as getDisplayMedia() and the Desktop Capture extension API. Disabling it causes those calls to fail, which can also prevent web meeting screen sharing. Microsoft documents exceptions for sites matching certain origin policies. This is administrative capture blocking, not redaction of content in a capture that is allowed. The Microsoft Learn policy page was last updated on 2026-05-22.
