AANT’s Home Buildings and Contents Standard offers combined cover, but its public overview is not the insurance contract. Whether it suits your home depends on the policy version, the cover sections and options shown on your Certificate of Insurance, and the terms in the matching Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). AANT distributes the product under the CGU brand; Insurance Australia Limited is identified as the issuer. Confirm the policy documents and limits before relying on any feature or deciding whether the cover is right for you.
First, identify the policy version
AANT’s policy-document index sets an important date boundary: for policies issued before 16 June 2025, it directs customers to obtain the relevant documents from CGU. Start with your issue or renewal date, then get the PDS and any supplementary documents that apply to that policy. The current product page is an overview, not a substitute for the contract. AANT’s insurance PDS index identifies the document route.
The linked current Home PDS was not available for review here. Detailed definitions, exclusions, claim conditions, excesses and settlement terms therefore cannot be confirmed from the product summary alone. Do not assume that terms from an older AANT or CGU policy apply to a newer one.
What Standard covers—and what the overview cannot settle
AANT markets building and contents insurance for a range of incidents and lists flood, rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami among the causes of loss or damage covered. The same overview says CGU does not cover actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. That distinction matters: the short list does not establish that every kind of inundation, coastal damage or water entry is covered. Check the precise definitions and exclusions in your PDS. AANT’s Home Building and Contents Insurance page is the source for these summary statements.
#1 Best Overall
Also check whether your policy actually includes buildings, contents or both. AANT markets combined cover as well as building-only and contents-only products. Your Certificate of Insurance is the place to confirm the sections selected for your property; do not infer them from a general product page.
Standard and Plus: the advertised differences
AANT presents Plus as the higher cover tier. Its current product overview describes the following differences. These are product-page statements, not a complete comparison of policy terms; check the applicable PDS and your Certificate of Insurance for eligibility, conditions and settlement details.

Because no current quote or complete PDS was available, the published information does not establish which tier is better value for a particular household. Compare the quote, excess, selected cover, limits and conditions for your own circumstances rather than treating Plus’s additional features as proof that it is the better choice.

- Legal liability: AANT says cover is up to $20 million in some situations. The overview distinguishes building liability at home from contents liability at home and elsewhere in Australia. It does not establish that the maximum applies to every claim.
- Portable contents: AANT states up to $10,000 for each item unless it is listed separately for a higher amount. It also notes other limits outside Australia or New Zealand and exclusions, including certain items while in use. Check the wording for the item, location and activity involved.
- Motor burnout: AANT says motors are covered up to 15 years after manufacture, subject to stated exclusions for items under warranty or used in a business. Verify whether the benefit is selected or included in your policy and how the relevant terms apply.
- Accidental damage and valuable contents: AANT lists these as optional benefits for Standard. The overview does not establish that either is active on an individual policy.
Other limits and excesses may affect a claim. AANT directs customers to their Certificate of Insurance for applicable excesses, so do not treat the figures above as the complete set of restrictions.
Check the building sum insured and temporary accommodation terms
AANT describes its building sum-insured calculator as guidance only and says customers are responsible for ensuring the sum insured reflects the full replacement value. If the insured amount exceeds the actual cost of repair, replacement or rebuilding, CGU says it pays the actual cost. A higher number on a policy is not, by itself, proof that every rebuilding cost is covered.

For a broader explanation of sum-insured cover, the Tasmanian Government’s home and contents insurance fact sheet explains that repair or rebuilding cover is capped at the chosen amount and advises readers to understand conditions attached to safety-net extensions. Use a consistent rebuild estimate and contents valuation when comparing policies.

AANT says temporary accommodation applies when the home cannot be lived in after a covered event, but applicability differs for owners, tenants and homes in strata or similar schemes. The reasonable amount depends on the circumstances, and further limits, exclusions and conditions apply. Read the policy wording for your living arrangement instead of assuming the advertised duration or an amount will apply in every case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you choose your own repairer?
AANT says customers may choose a repairer. For repairs by someone outside CGU’s partner network, however, AANT says the repair does not receive the same workmanship guarantee or repair management, and payment is limited to a fair and reasonable amount. CGU’s lifetime workmanship guarantee is described as applying to authorised home repairs. Check the policy documents and claims process to understand what applies to the repairer you choose and the work authorised.
How to assess whether Standard fits your needs
- Match the documents to the policy date. Check the issue or renewal date and obtain the applicable PDS and supplementary documents. For policies issued before 16 June 2025, AANT directs customers to CGU for the documents.
- Confirm what is insured. Check the Certificate of Insurance for building, contents or both, the sum insured, selected options and excesses.
- Read the wording for the risks that matter to your property. Pay particular attention to the definitions and exclusions for flood, storm, storm surge, tsunami and actions of the sea.
- Verify optional cover and item limits. Check whether accidental damage, valuable contents, motor burnout or portable contents is active, and whether valuable items need separate listing.
- Compare tiers and alternatives on like-for-like inputs. Use the same rebuild estimate and contents valuation, then compare wording, exclusions, excesses, accommodation terms, sub-limits and any safety-net conditions—not just headline premiums.
AANT says its information is general and does not take account of your individual objectives, financial situation or needs. Treat the overview accordingly and assess the terms against your circumstances before purchasing. AANT’s Important Information and PDS page provides the policy-document direction and general-advice statement.
